  1. Been out with the ferrets the last two days. As i've been having a lack of rabbits on the usual place recently i tried a bit of ground that i've not touched this year. i lamped it the night before and there are lots about although Tyla only managed to connect with two but it gave me an idea of where to start. i went with jaegervulpes off this site and another mate, first set was empty and the second was plain hard work with the rabbits refusing to bolt and the ferrets killing below ground at undiggable depths 16+ foot managed to get two out of there that were shallow enough to dig to.
  2. Been out once already tonight! Took my missus's step sisters (10 and 12) out as they have been pestering me, saw a few but was too early and so they were tucked in the hedge. They enjoyed it though and didnt want to come home! Off out properly in about an hour so fingers crossed!
  3. This kind of cross really appeals to me as a bushing/flushing dog, unfotunately not an option for me right now though. Good luck with them
  4. Could be worse Brimmer, im yet to break double figures this season The rabbits just dont seem to be around in any numbers Out again tomorrow though so fingers crossed!
  5. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOfvbAvenzc&NR=1 Seems like the dog is half playing to me?
  6. You cant beat that feeling, well done both of you
  7. "you've got more chance of plaiting sawdust" - something my mate says when he dosent like an idea

    Hedgecutting

The worst thing about it is if you try and longnet the sides of the hedge. Hundreds of 6" legths of bramble and blackthorn, perfect for collecting in the net and an absolute f*cker to untangle They did all the hedges on one of my permissions this year
  9. Eastbournes not far, cant see why not As for her being too big for ferreting, not so sure. She might be a bit tall but theres no reason she cant mark, hold rabbits in the nets and grab the odd bolter? i used to ferret with our familys old pet collie and she wasnt ideal but alot better than no dog at all!

    Fuming

if the keeper is trying to press charges against you and you press a counter charge against him then usually the old bill just let it drop as its too much work to investigate. At the end of the day you cant prove he threatened you but he cant prove anything either?

It's not all about driving around feeding birds it is a very difficult job with extremely long hours and for little money, but if you are in the right then dont accept a caution as has been said, and like comanche said his dogs can piss in the dark and so can mine on command without the use of a lamp i dont care how hard it is (and i know as i was an underkeeper when i was younger), it dosent give them the right to act like the police on a public road. i would be making a counter charge of intimidating behaviour against them. its totally irrelevant whether your dog can piss in
  12. Dont worry about it, these things happen. By law i believe you are supposed to take the corpse to the police station and make a statement explaining how the incident happened. in reality i cant imagine my local cop shop being pleased to see anyone toting a dead rodent and wanting to tell them a story about it Just enjoy your walks and enjoy having the dogs off their leads and remember any rats or rabbits they kill is good, anything else was shot first.
  13. Good pic mate. Nice to see them all so relaxed together, my dog is sound around them but not friendly like that. She would rather avoid them than given the choice but knows what they are for. Where abouts in sussex are you mate?
  14. its hard mate. i've been shooting and ferreting all my life, nearly thirty now, but only just got into dogs. Still dont know anyone who is really into it and has the time to pass on the knowledge, dog men seem to be very cliquey and im an unknown. so im just making do on my own bringing the dogs on and learning as i go. Hope you find what your after
  15. it would take a book to answer that question and even then no one else would agree A lurcher is a lot of different things to alot of different people, depends on quarry, terrain, culture, current fashion and a shit load of other factors. The one thing that everyone seems to agree on is that they are right and have "proper" dogs and everyone else is wrong and have "messer" dogs As long as yours does what you need it to do for you then i would say its a "proper" lurcher
  16. i had a similar nightmare with mine when i first got it. Ended up getting in a temper, throwing it in the shed and ignoring it until this season This year i reduced the bagging from 100% to 70% and attached it to poles in a diy quickset type thing and now have less trouble with it. Good luck
  17. Dont suppose you got any pics? Sorry to be a pain
  18. Welcome mate, always good to have the pics up
  19. Based on what? The dog works fine just a bit vocal, she asked for advice not pointless comments - or are you looking to get the dog? Sounds like you think he might suit you
  20. Best off getting this put in the lurchers section, you will get more response mate. i am no kind of expert (just bringing on my first two lurchers) but from the sound of it a 3/4 whippet 1/4 collie would suit you. Good luck with whatever you choose
  21. Thats the right attitude, i've always been the same - happy to take people out. its great when you see people really get into it, keen to learn and all that. Only problem this year seems to be a lack of rabbits! Should have a bit of time off over christmas so i will be getting suited and booted and going looking for new permission!
  22. Nice little pack you have there, what do you work them on over there and whats the law like?
  23. You can do it through ebay in which case you will need an ebay account or direct by e mail. i have PM'd you his email, tell him Paul recommended him to you
  24. Self employed chippy, work 5 days a week although its getting hard to get the jobs in now. Had a few more enforced days off than i want recently
