  1. That’s always the worry when we first let ours off, that they wander a bit to far in the first week or so, once they know where they live they never tend to go to far, one year one of the members ( who will remain nameless) took over the running of the shoot and left them after a week with no water so most of them went on the wander and never came back, next door must of had a hell of a year, we put 800 down and the return was under 100 for the season, people still bring it up now, just to slap him down when he’s getting a bit above his station
  2. Back up at the shoot early this morning to move feeders further out from the pens as the birds have grown in confidence and are moving further out during the day but still heading back later afternoon, I don’t want to jinx it but they do look well and have really come on well despite the weather, they will have been in 4 weeks on Tuesday
  3. A friend of the lad who owns the sheep farm I shoot on had 120 lambs stolen two years ago in one night, it was all over the local news because they had been medicated and were not fit for human consumption, they left the ewes so the obviously had experience handling sheep, they never found them or who took them
  4. That looks in tip top condition ( apart from been dead ) nice work ?
  5. After giving it another hour ( because I seen another one) I called it a night, I rang my mate to tell him that I’d shot another dog, he asked if I had time to have a go at the crows ( jackdaws) I said if his brother stops working me so hard I’ll see what I can do ( I’ll have to find someone to take with me who is much better with a shotgun than me, so I can take all the glory ? ) I also got an invite to the farm walked up day around Christmas, they have some very nice game cover along the hedge backs and it’s always nice to get invited to a family shoot day ?
  6. Well I’ve came back up to my secret shooting grounds after been told that all the crop is down, turns out the one field I wanted to be in is still in standing wheat. So I went back to where I shot the two cubs last time, almost an hour in and this dog made an appearance, approximately 100 yards and lights out, I’ll give it another 45 minutes and call it a night ?
  7. What a difference a day makes, been on sandstone the water soon gets away, the weather looks decent for the next week so hopefully that will do them some good ?
  8. Everything is now cut and with forestry removing a large amount of timber it may of messed up one of the drives but it seems to of opened up another drive, we should be able to push the birds from the field over the trees and over a valley, lining the guns out on the track in the picture, the good thing about this is any birds not shot will land in the field at the back of the farm, staying on our shoot, I’m definitely looking forward to giving this one a go ?
  9. Feeding time for me again, the birds are looking well, taking a lot of feed, they are starting to wander a bit through the day but at the minute they seem to be coming back to the pens, I shot another two rabbits off the veg patch so the old girl was very happy, paid me in tomatoes and cucumbers ? nice ?
  10. Definitely worth a trip out, nice shooting and it looks a lovely place to be ?
  11. Well, where to start, as Hugo’s dad is serving a centrefire ban for his horrific shooting last time it was me on the rifle and him on the lamp, with the caller 50 yards out in the field it was about 20 minutes before the first one came charging towards the caller, he lit it up as it reached the caller and in a split second it was down. We decided to give it a bit longer as we had good cover from the moon, 45 minutes passed and we decided to move on, off he went to gather the caller and the cub, I ran the spotter around the field and there’s two sets of eyes looking at him walking up the field
  12. One down, came running in to the caller ?
  13. The birds are looking a lot more settled this evening, all getting up on roost back at the pens, not only do they seem happier but me also after yesterday’s fiasco, now it’s time to go on fox patrol ?
  14. I would of said .410 would be the best bet, followed by 28 bore, I hope you can make this happen for her and that she’s well enough to enjoy the experience, creating another happy memory for you both at a very sad time best wishes stav
  15. I thought it might of been because operation ewe-tree caught up with him ( see what I did there ) ??
  16. I’d be very happy with 52 for 60, cracking job ?
  17. Back up at the shoot, still raining and as I came down the track a buzzard lifted with a poult, another 3 dead with their heads removed, I’ve lifted the wire and found one that isn’t going to make it on the up side they seem to be not far from the pens ?
  18. I almost went to the sheep farm but looking at the weather tomorrow seems a better option
  19. I’m back up at the shoot in the morning and as it’s rained solidly for 48 hours I’m going to lift the wire on the pens, they need to be out of there
  20. Do you want to be my dad ? top man, what a cracking gun for him to learn his craft ?
  21. If I’m on a pestie Canada job, 9 times out of 10 I rifle them, still nice now and then to get them flighting In onto the water ive never been a massive fan of the meat, but a lad that sometimes comes with me likes it, he checks them by squeezing the beaks, he says the softer the beak the younger the bird
  22. I constantly moan about the weather, it’s to hot, it’s to cold, it’s to windy, it’s raining, mad really because I don’t like being in the house ?
