  1. Single barrel 12g have their uses and are very effective, however, there are potential issues... .....first off just the one shot ....then there is the weight, usually light, at least the Baikel sitting in my cabinet is, kicks like a mule with any half decent load... Very few made these days, on the plus side, shop around and you can pick up one for £25...I did at the Game Fair! Must be worth it for that, but I'm still not quite sure what for!!
  2. The principle is sound, the detail is a little open...all rifles, have 2 zero points, once you have determined your second (ultimate) zero then bring the distance down to find the first zero, usually between about 20-60 yards, depending on barrel length, weight of bullet, calibre, scope distance above barrel, etc, etc. So once you are happy with the ultimate zero you can zero using a first zero which is much closer, but if you change ammo you will have to check everything again!
  3. 8 to 1", therefore in round figures for your 1.27 inches...10 clicks!!
  4. Difficult this one, as some know I have had a near death experience with a Hatsan, allegedly they have got better, but if you get a used one it could be an early one which putting it kindly could be classed as dangerous!!! So from my point of view anything but... Does it have to be a semi, plenty of inexpensive guns about, even from Turkey which are quite reasonable..????
  5. The HMR catches me out sometimes with drop, last night was unfortunately a good example. First off, things tend to seem futher away at night and the HMR does not drop as I expect, I missed 2 over the top last night because I overcompensated for distance and drop. Fortunately one stayed around long enough for me to get him ........
  6. Another great read John..and I know very well what you mean about the above head shot with roof between....I've been there with Mr L and my boy both over my head ....... interesting experience to say the least. The rains stopped for a while and out last night myself got a handful of bunnies and saw 3 foxes but not a shot off at any. They were all VERY twitchy last night, one in particular, and a big fella, caught him in the beam for an instant and he turned and dissapeared in a blink!
  7. I believe I am right in saying that is a Hand held unit not a scope mounted unit and completely different construction to the 170. The build/wiring is therfore of a different design...and from what you say better than the 170
  8. yes and mine does ...and so did mine until I just got it back from a varaition!!! It now reads against the rimfires...for SHOOTING VERMIN, GROUND GAME AND ANY OTHER LAWFUL QUARRY. All mention of FOX has gone from my certificate, even on the centrefires and the wording replaced by this ANY OTHER LAWFUL QUARRY. Obviously concerned I rang my people immediately and was assurded FOX is ANY OTHER LAWFUL QUARRY...so apparently Fox is NOT Vermin.....confused someone is 'avin a larf, this change of wording followed an ACPO agreement to make the certificates simpler and more uniform t
  9. We all take a different view and all have different shooting abilities, I am a competant shot and the best I have done (so far) on a bunny is 258 yards with a 17g V-Max, I know one guy who has done 283 yards...this is the EXCEPTION and most definately NOT THE NORM. I consider the HMR a perfectly reasonable 100-150 yard tool, I would not buy one expecting 175 yard shots on a daily basis!
  10. ....and where did you say you lived and intended to keep your guns and cabinet and where did the police inspect your cabinet, and what did the police say about you owning/buying a gun and what calibre did you get and what did the police say about shooting bunnies and foxes with it etc???? I'm more than happy to try and offer help and advice where I can, but I simply don't get your post, doesn't add up to me!
  11. John has answered pretty well I'd say, nevertheless, consider VERY carefully the Deben Max Pro, a whole package, filters a plenty to choose from, more than capable to 200 yards and cheaper than the Lightforce 170! Certainly not the best build quality in the world; for some reason none of the lamping kits are, but you will not have to rewire it as often as the lightforce.
  12. This is not the first time this question has been asked, and I am a little confused, you have stated you are after a .222, can I ask what you have considered and what thought process has made you arrive at this particular calibre?? In simple terms why a .222 specifically??? Cheers
  13. You have to be realistic when talking about a cheapy. I have got several JSR scopes, all mine have the Allen key adjustable turrets which are a pain in the rear! Build quality is not great, dialing in is a bit of a joke but they tend to hold zero reasonably well. However, the glass punches much bigger than it's weight! All in all, be aware of price/product, but I bought one, then another and another and one for my lad as well...taking everything into account I rate them as very good value for money!!
  14. Flippen 'ek, your people work fast, round here they would only be thinking about the next coffee!!!
  15. Temporary licences are available to cover just this situation, although I am not entirely sure how the police would have reacted as it was apparently not licenced originally. Two years down the line and I'm not sure how they will react now either, however, I do suggest you do something very quickly to get this sorted/legalised or someone could be looking at a 5 year jail term if found in possession!!
  16. Interesting again...Scotland and England do have differences, but NON LEAD is the order of the day for Shotguns here, does NOT apply to rifles though!! Canada Geese are already on our General licence and it rather looks like Egyptian are going on it (which surprises me) but no sign of Greylag yet?
  17. Anschutz and Sako may lead the pack but VERY few people will notice any difference in performance to the CZ. I have 3 CZ Rimfires, they do everything I want! I have the light barrel on ALL mine, no need for the heavy barrel at all for field work, you will not find any difference in accuracy, just weight, simply a matter of preference!
  18. The English General licence is still not 100% for next year but Graylag are off limits here without special approval ..... probably different in Scotland ...anyway ....any centrefire is capable and yes it is legal ..in England. Scotland does have differences so you need someone to confirm that who knows Scottish details better than me!

  20. Scopes and reticles become very personal and can also have a serious effect on your pocket, not either of these though! The AGS is acceptable and the Simmons is an excellent scope for the money. They have different reticles though, so that is the first surprise, the second is that if you have an 8-32 on an air rifle why did you get a 3.5-10 on an HMR. I'm a bit lost to be honest...
  21. Flippen' ek....... I can see where you are coming from with the boiling water but that's the first time I have heard of that one......and not something I will be rushing to try!! I did say "some people" deker, I don't do it myself, but if you cork the muzzles and fill the tubes without soaking the working bits, it must loosen any dirt I guess.I think it a very old method. Now, what I do do, if there is anything showing past the cones, is to put the cleaning rod in a drill and run the bronze brush up and down that end only. It does no harm as the barrel is much harder than the bristles,
  22. Best of luck with it, you have certainly made the right choice calibre wise for a deer/fox rifle, and Howas tend to be Ok too! Far bigger choice of ammo to deal with all sorts of situations/quarry with a .243 than a .260, and personally I do not consider a .308 a deer/fox rifle! (even though mine is conditioned for both). ATB!
  23. At that rate I wouldn't be too concerned about barrel wear, as long as it looks ok go for it. One shot, one fox!! Check to see if it been used with a moderator, this can sometimes lead to crown damage! If it's not shooting too clever try getting it re-crowned, that will probably put a bit of life back into it and not cost the earth. ATB!
  24. The ammo is quite fast, that is largely the point of the calibre. That being the case barrel maintenance/cleaning is pretty important. Barrel life is likely to be less than many other calibres but there are few who wear them out..how many foxes do you have???
  25. Flippen' ek....... I can see where you are coming from with the boiling water but that's the first time I have heard of that one......and not something I will be rushing to try!!
