  1. Always difficult this one...NEW Stock, Trigger, magazine converstion, bedding is almost guaranteed to add up to more than the price of the original gun! I always take the view that I would rather spend a bit more on the gun to start with and get one that works. We each have a view and like to approach things differently, but I never could understand buying a gun and then throwing a load of it away!! Personally I don't see a Hogue or magazine conversion helping accuracy in any way, change the trigger by all means and sorting the stock may well do that!! On the other hand, just w
  2. Lets not get carried away here. Quality control at manufacture could, and is part of this but many other "tweeks" can be made depending how "bad" the gun is too start with. It has to be admitted that any reputable company will be able to improve your factory gun whatever, but you have to look at the starting position and what you intend to do with the gun..if you are already grouping at 1" out to 200 yards or even 100 yards, what benefit will it be to "many" to bring this down to 1/2inch. Lots can be done to a Rem 700 but I have no need for the tiny extra benefit for cost result! Mine
  3. Just thinking about this a bit more...I have done shooting holidays/ breaks/visits/invites to a number of different areas, Devon and Cornwall, and Scotland in particular strike me as pretty laid back. I have had maids walk into the bedroon with guns/ammo/lamps/clothes all over the place and they have not batted an eyelid...I struggle to see that happening the closer you get to London, etc!!! PS, always ask the Hotel/B&B if they have any gun storage facilities, many do in well known shooting holiday areas!! Whatever, always let the hotel know you have guns with you!!
  4. There are still a lot of rules about this, but the simple advice is to keep them as secure as possible, keeps bolts out of guns and as far away from each other as possible, keep everything out of sight, where possible, keep ammo seperate. The rules are basically common sense,...the boot of a locked and alarmed car is often acceptable but not everything together, it is always a good idea to have some "bits" seperate, even if this means some are less secure! You need to take all reasonable precautions and show due dilligence in doing so, you will only find out what that means if everythi
  5. Take a look here, anything you want give me a shout and I'll see the best price I can do for you......VAT just gone back up 2.5%, missed your chance in 2009! But I'll still do you a good deal!! http://www.djsproducts.com/
  6. You trying to Hi-Jack this thread???
  7. 20lb or more is always a good fox..with the winter coat it tends to make them look even bigger!!
  8. Try it and see if you get a FAC/SGC!!
  9. Just had my new .22WMR chopped to 19", hope the same holds true for this calibre, but as I'm probably never going to be able to check, who knows! Seems to work ok though!
  10. They certainly do not contact your doctor every time, but you must give them authority to do so and depending how you complete the form, and what they had for breakfast on any given day they may well! You must be honest!!!
  11. Chill, 2 weeks is nothing in the life of a FAC application, especially as it seems most of it was over Xmas and the New Year!!
  12. 6 will handle a lot, and many will say it will handle what you want to do now, personally I'd be happier with 5. One thing I suspect most will agree on though is PLASTIC. I stick to felt/fibre on everything but plastic approved clay grounds. Personal thing, but also a courtesy as I have seen so many plastic wads (and Cartridge cases) spoiling the countryside! Many driven will not allow plastic anyway!
  13. Not had a Howa, but know others who have, also fired them, not bad really, but I just don't like the Hogue stocks, others do, just a personal thing. I may well have bought one myself were it not for the stock!!
  14. In general your cheque goes in one direction and your application in another, long way to go yet!
  15. Out of interest, which .410 do you own? John Don't have one in the Cabinet at the moment, and gave away my last few 410 Cartridges to a member of this site just a few months back!
  16. Well all I can say is that I am shooting with a Webley & Scott single barrel B/A .410 with a long barrel & full choke. Shooting Winchester 2 1/2" cartridges. A few nights ago, I was out with the lamp and took a shot at a rabbit about 25 yards away. I could clearly see the shot pattern hit all around the rabbit in the mud, which I verified after the shot and after the rabbit hopped away! I am no expert on the topic of the .410 but I am enjoying lamping with the gun, albeit shooting at very close range rabbits. I can remember a chap in my childhood, a well known poacher who worked for
  17. Apart from the other valid reasons mentioned, there is also the small matter of discharging a firearm within 50 feet of a highway. Lots of peoples back gardens are more than 50 ft from a highway. I think the actual wording is "50 feet from the centre of a highway" and only if it causes a nuisance to danger those using the highway. J. "It is an offence under the Highways Act 1980 s 161(2) to discharge any firearm or firework within 50 feet of the centre of a highway which is a carriageway, with the consequence that a user of the carriageway is injured, interrupted or endan
  18. Be careful about slagging off Firearms Licensing Officers on public forums. Many of them do read these boards, especially if they are shooters themselves. J. I hear what you say and unfortunately they do have a bit of clout...but my FEO is a complete idiot, I have to explain the law to him commonly and I have to mentor/send letters in for all and sundry who even want a .22lr these days because the guy doesn't have the balls to say yes or no. His predecessor who did the job 20+ years, and new my Dad on first name terms, as well as me, was sensible and sound....and he was police
  19. This whole business still has some confusing and unresolved issues as I have just sold my .22WMR to a RFD. This was shortened and screw cut to 16inch before I bought it (NOT factory work), and has never been proofed since!! So the RFD I bought it from sold it to me unproofed, and the one I sold it to, bought it, and will presumably sell it unproofed!! Interestingly the RFD I have just bought my NEW .22WMR from, also cut and threaded it, and sold it to me unproofed!! Not at all confusing is it!!  Your rifles aren't out of proof because whatever has been d
  20. Bit like the chicken and the egg this one..difficult to start with but then you get and idea!! If you go to any of the Game Fairs there are a lot to look through, especially the big one, the CLA. Any decent RFD will probably stock 2 or 3 makes, maybe more, and will be more than happy for you to take a stroll to the door and have a look through some, if he isn't move on!! Reticles/magnification/variable magnification/Objective lens size/Parallax adjustment/etc/etc it goes on and on! It may sound a bit daunting but you will soon get the idea, and hopefully your helpful RFD wil

  22. That is very true, Wolf and Barnaul have their moments but PRVI seems pretty consistent in all my centrefires and commonly deliver 1" groups, where as it seems the EXACT same ammo goes out to 2, 3 or even 4 inch groups in other peoples rifles, and not just Mr L's either! And when you feed mine quality ammo they virtually turn into match rifles!! Even my .22lr puts Magtech in the hole, whereas many others have less than favorable experiences with the stuff! ....and he is right, I'm not complaining!!
  23. Alan Sharpe is the man who deals with "much" of Swindon! Now...I recon he is a reasonable bloke, and I get on with him OK, it's a long story as I am in Reading and come under Thames Valley!!! But others may (probably will) have a different opinion depending on their individual experiences with him!
  24. Dare I say, get a lamping kit, work with that and then decide if you want to move into nightvision!!
  25. members are always saying about this, but it is ILLEGAL, read the general license, what reason will you give for shooting crop damage,?, ok, so you may get away with health and safety, but then you have to prove that, but then you also need to show you have tried all other methods to keep them away, shooting- no pest control, humaine dispatch-yes I've used a silenced 410 on fox in a garden, but thats one single shot I am BPCA/RSPH like Stubby, and as he says there are lots of issues here! It happens that I have to shoot in peoples gardens sometimes but lots of wheels have to
