Bit of a saga to this but got there in the end! The wood is actually not bad, much better than it looks in the pictures. I have had the barrel chopped from 22.5 inches to 19" (don't ask, that's what I wanted), SAK fitted, after trials with several mods this is as good as any and a sensible price. Been playing with the trigger and the Brooks kit, had the 1.25lb trigger spring to start with but this is a little too light for me in the field so have gone a bit heavier. Nothing wrong with the 1.25lb spring as long as you are careful, but I have a lot of rifles and this is just a bit to

This is difficult as you do not say your primary use or mention money. The way I started with shotguns was with my Dad, had no money and ended up buying several Spanish guns in the early days. There seemed to be more of them about years ago than today. Anyway, they were cheap, reliable and taught me a lot! As time went by I ended up with a Beretta 303 in around 1990. It was like a breath of fresh air. It just felt so good, smooth, precise and a feeling of confidence, to be fair I don't think my shooting improved at all. Went on to get a 686 Sporting Special with 28inch, Silver Pige

Been doing some digging and found this.... 6.16x51mm (.243 Win.) The .243 is a popular hunting cartridge for deer sized game and it fires the 6mm bullet. It is a bit heavier than the .223 and has some good bullets for long range shooting available, but there are not many match grade loads available from factory ammo makers. It does fall between the .223 and the .308 in terms of energy and penetration. The .243 has less recoil than the .308, and yet it sends bullets down range at near .223 speeds, with twice the bullet weight. This flat shooting cartridge does not suffer from some of

As above. This goes round in circles, the .177 performs best being fast and flat(ish), that needs a fairly light pellet. Problem then can be over penitration and not imparting enough energy into the quarry. The .22 is slower but carries its energy well, seldom suffers over penetration and tends to impart all its energy into quarry, but is does not fly as flat as the .177. The .20 was introduced some time ago now to hopefully solve the problems of both, it doesn't. So your best bet is probably to get a heavier .177 pellet, or buy a .22 as well!!

Like he said, you will commonly find the .223 ballistic tips do go right through the fox, even if you hit bone the odds are, bullet fragments or all of it will still go right through. But on the whole they are the best bet for destruction and reduced onward bullet travel!

I was out earlier this afternoon on the highest piece of land in Surrey, would have been there longer but the owner put his 4x4 in one of the neighbours front gardens going down the steep frozen access lane at 17.00 yesterday, so I left well before then today as the temperature was plummeting! Anyway, it was a large Private Estate and pretty much virgin snow everywhere from about 50-100yards away from the main house. It was great to see so many tracks, the deer were all over the place, pheasant looked interesting as they started and stopped where they landed and took off, fox sniffing

Ha Ha...I don't do running...The Wild Boar is one of the few reasons I invested in a .308, heavy slow lump tends to work quite well on the Boar!! Give me a shout when and I'll show you!!
-
I'm still as confused as when we spoke earlier today. As I said, .243 is certainly not a mainstream military calibre!! Does the round have the circle with a cross inside it stamped on the rim of the cartridge case? I will be fascinated to see how this story unfolds!! ATB!

Whatever you want....a while back the Landlord of a local country pub wanted one off me to fly on the whip Aeriel of his Vespa!!!

Semis are easy to "un-cock" so no need for them there! Not so easy with other types and so snap caps "may" be useful, I have some and tend to use them although I am unconvinced!! Only use them in the shotguns, I haven't got any for the rifles!
-
I did say they use it on Elk,and I agree it's a lot of gun. Info comes from, oddly enough, several hand loading sites as well as Wikipedia. Re boar I have to disagree. The world record heaviest boar was a sow(!) shot in Herefordshire, 518 lbs. The boar with the longest tushes was also shot in England. According to Wild Boar Britain the British wild boar is as large as any in Eastern Europe. Originally from mainly French stock, they have been crossed with other populations from both Eastern and Western Europe, giving hybrid vigour. The size is now under threat from trophy hunting. bi pod and a spriner
Deker replied to pest hunter 151's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
OK, as with so many things there is no right or wrong answer! Shooting a springer from a Bipod does have an interesting effect but if you work on it you can make it happen and it will be more consistent than you think. It needs practice and almost constant Bipod use. If you are an occasional springer shooter, and an even more occasional bipod springer shooter you are probably wasting your time and money with one!! -
You won't go wrong with the 452. I suggest you get the T3 Hunter or the Remington...forget the T3 Lite! Glass is personal and can get expensive!
-
I tend to use chocolate as rat bait usually, works pretty well on the whole and easier to carry around than a Deer carcase
-
Is that because any calibre that has been used in a war is not allowed in some European countries? eg 7 x 57 Not sure where you get your information from Ric and I'm not sure what you call Europe...but remember in Europe, you get Elk/Moose, Bear, Mountain Cats, Wolves, and bigger Wild Boar than here..as well as a few things I've forgotten.....
-
This has been done many times, if you have a search you will find a lot of references/comment!! Good place to start is the Deben Max Pro and Lightforce. Look carefully at the packages available before reaching a decision!
-
I'm sure you will get on fine but the T3 Lite is probably the worst balanced gun on the market, especially if you fit a mod. It took me about 2.5 years, 2 barrel cuts, 5 scopes, 2 sets of mounts, 3 moderators and eventually about 6oz (150g)of lead in the butt to sort it out...oh yes..... and a lot of money! It's great now, enjoy the journey!!!

any good advice welcome please
Deker replied to allrounder lad's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
This is a bit difficult as you have already said he cannot support your application. Bottom line is, whatever he says is likely to happen! Any reasonable FEO will make it clear they are not happy and give you the chance of withdrawing your application. It may seem a technicality, which it is really, but withdrawing your application is better than a refusal. That being the case I suggest discussing with the BASC immediately, to get their view on the situation and options! Not trying to be funny but you will have to be 100% honest with them and tell them everything!! -
Did you see this a few weeks back, I got this together with Mr L pulling the trigger...this is 12mm industrial Steel Plate, the depth of the .308 and .243 is the same to the mm, the difference is the hole diameter! 100 yards shots!! Front and back.....

Just a hint mate.If you fill the cavity with salt(Be sure to pack it tightly) and leave it for 2-3 weeks then simply tap the salt out you get a better result plus you dont get the discolouration you get with meths and it won't stink of meths for the next two years. Also if you cut the base of charlies tale as you say you don't need to split any sticks simply grab hold tight with both hands put your foot into the flanks of charlie and pull as hard as you can,A little twist to get it started and "pop" of it comes. Please dont think I'm dissing your methods mate because im honestly not, just tr

Totally agree with Snap Shot here! I have .243 and .308, I have no axe to grind with either camp, but if you have to get just one rifle the .243 is the one!

This lot could be worth a look, they always used to deliver, think they still do!! http://www.justcartridges.com/
-
JSR and Nikko Sterling also worth a look, as well as others already mentioned. On top of a rimfire you can get away with a lot and there is a lot to choose from, check out as many as you can before you part with money!

I'm a bit confused what that was all about... The difference in range will be inches (if that) and the difference in spread, (which will be tiny), can more than easily be dealt with by chokes...and why will 32 inch barrels kick you more than 30 or 28
