  1. Absolutely right, all guns are ammo sensitive to an extent and perhaps there are others more sensitive than the .204, but I haven't found any yet!! I've never heard of a 26" heavy barrel rifle being "ideal" for vehicle use! BUT BUT BUT, the point I am making is that I have no use for one. Others may well have a use, and indeed a good one with the right ammo may well be a corker! And....you're a tuff cookie if you can carry a 26" heavy barrel rifle for long in the field!! ATB!!!
  2. Done it with Rabbits, Pheasant and Pigeon but not with the Fox!! And to think..... all they were after was a bit of !! Mind you I think when it's my time to go then there could be worse things to be doing...but I still hope I don't get shot!!!
  3. It's probably well known by many that I am not a fan of the .204, I looked hard at it some time ago but from what I have seen and used and heard I have no regrets about leaving it!! Now, don't go getting all upset, I have 7 different FAC tools and I can live without it, and yes, I have all the common ones...common because they work, have a wide ammo choice and are easy to find factory ammo or reload....I'm too old to start with all this malarkey. The .204 has a place, but as many know it is temperamental and fussy in the extreme, and I certainly do not need a 26 inch heavy barrel to lu
  4. It is still a very useful document of which I have a hard copy...and is referred to as the "Bible"...long overdue for a rewrite though!!!
  5. I've used the 40g on the range with a 100 yard zero and found the drop to be just over 1 Milldot at 200 yards. No idea at 250 yards...it's pushing your luck a bit whatever with this stuff!!
  6. Any .22lr or HMR is capable of killing a fox but every situation is different so a blanket..what ammo do you use does not really hack it. So, it's .22lr subs for me these days and if I am expecting them further out I will take another calibre. Everyones experiences, situations and needs are different, and everyone has a different selection of tools available and has to make the best of what they have!!!
  7. Pheasant shoots are not my thing as many of you will know, I've only ever been an about 4-6 (never paid and never will), doesn't interest me I have to say, just too artificial for my liking...BUT, not a criticism of those that do like them, just not my bag!! Anyway, I am fortunate to know a few people and received a personal invitation to a private shoot on Boxing Day, unfortunately I already had other fixed plans and couldn't make it...so the invite got extended to the Beaters Day Shoot yesterday. The day was spent at a freezing Marlborough estate where the hospitality was great, the
  8. Thanks all! More thought needeed I recon, I'll keep you up to speed if I get one. Cheers
  9. For some reason I am getting it into my head to buy one of these, Bushnell Elite 6500 4.5-30x50 Mildot.. Does anyone own or have first hand experience of any of the 6500 range or specifically this one of course. Your views, good, bad or whatever appreciated. Cheers
  10. Truth is I know very little about these IOR scopes, and I don't know anyone who has one...Romania is hardly known as the world centre of scope optics but I do hear these are pretty good. Which model and reticle (is there a choice) do you have?? Anyone else about that has one of these and has any comments... Cheers!!
  11. The 595 had issues at one time I recall, but without doubt it is a better rifle on the whole than the T3, but then I rate the Finnfire a better rifle than the Quad as well, and some of those old BRNO ....... perhaps I'm just getting old. The old chestnut of .222 & .223, if you are into home brews then whatever you want and perhaps a .222 may edge it as there are maybe a few more deals on them than .223, likelyhood it some of the guns may be a bit older as well. If you use factory ammo then no contest, .223 every time, a much wider selection of ammo, easier to get, and on the whol
  12. By all means have a try to make one but as others have said it may well cost you a lot more than buying one complete, and may well cause the FEO some grief. Lots of Cabinets on the market, have a look around, then have a look here ...... http://www.djsproducts.com/ Anything that suits PM me, and I'll let you have best price. ATB!!
  13. Plenty of kits about and some can be useful but to be honest they are either cheap and nasty, don't contain what you really want, have TOO MUCH in them, or simply come in a VERY expensive box. Buy what you need seperately, and do your best to find a Dewey rod!! Oh yes...and throw away your boresnake!!
  14. For some strange reason the likes of the Hornet and .22Magnum (WMR) have gone out of fashion over the last 10-20 years. I suspect this is down to the influence of RFD on new impressionable shooters (but certain bits of legislation have not helped). It is heartening to note that a hardcore of experienced shooters stayed true to these calibres and the reality is beginning to dawn on more now! There is most definately a place in todays shooting world for the Hornet and WMR!!! ATB!!
  15. You obviously haven't had any dealings with GMK before then!!!
  16. The Tikka .223 was 1-12 up to about 4 years back when they changed it to 1-8. About 2 years ago they went back to 1-12 but seem to have kept up the 1-8 as well (either that or they just have a lot of 1-8 stock) My .223 T3 Lite stainless is 1-8 and it handles everything from 40-75g no problem at all, they all group very well and in a test at Bisley at 200 yards they were all in a neat verticle line dictated by the bullet weight. To be honest I don't know why it handles them all so well, the maths would suggest it shouldn't, but is does!!! Edit, Target wise I tend to use 62g and out
  17. These calibres are relatively new to them, so it remains to be seen. I first handled an Anschutz .22lr back in around 1970 at my club and I have to say I instantly fell in love with it. Their target shooting heritage is legendary, their hunting rifles are based on this!! I don't do any serious target shooting these days, my work is mainly in the field, and whilst I suspect they will end up carving out as good a name for these as they have for target and field rimfires I just don't need it. I need a practical rifle that I can group all day to 1" and don't cry too much if it gets sc
  18. If you are talking about a conventional, run of the mill 12ft lb air rifle then 50 yards is pushing your luck. Accuracy wise you should get touching shots with a HMR, and close to that with a .22lr at 50 yards!! This was 100 yards on a good day for me with HMR! (4 shots) It doesn't happen like that every time. Shot 3 and 4 were just about as close as you can get to being in the same hole! CZ Silhouette, full length barrel, Sirocco Mod and saviour of the world, a Harris Bipod.....cheap old JSR scope though!!
  19. I'm not quite with you on this one, the Mach2 has nowhere near the speed or power of the HMR, and the WMR has a chunk more grunt than the HMR. The .17 Mach 2 is actually very similar to the .22 Magnum (WMR) in trajectory out to 150 yards, but not in energy. The 40 grain .22 WMR bullet delivers 115 ft. lbs. of energy at 150 yards, compared to the 64 ft. lbs. of the .17 M2. (the .17 HMR retains 99 ft. lbs. of energy at that distance.) The Mach2 must have a use for something, but when you have a .22lr, .17HMR and a .22WMR to choose from it is very difficult to find anything where the
  20. As others have said this wording is confusing to say the least, and in my view VERY POOR on behalf of your region. But moving on, the .22WMR really started to go out of fashion when the HMR appeared. The HMR most certainly has a place (I have .22LR, .17HMR and .22WMR) but it is not the new messiah which is now beginning to dawn on people. There is now a slow but steady resurgence in the .22WMR, still a long way to go though!! I have a use and a place for all the rimfires I own, and the .22WMR is a cracker, gives me a great feeling of confidence with one in my hand and the V-Max ammo
  21. I'd go along with SS above very largely, but I seem to be back to zero with just one shot on the HMR, usually park one in the dirt as I get to the shoot and off we go. Mine is a 452 Silhouette with full length barrel and SAK! Anyway, other issues, you will soon get used to what size you need to cut the patches, and personally I'd say stay well away from a boresnake on a 17 HMR. Dewey rods are good, the only one I have though (or can afford) is for my HMR, because that bore is so tiny!!
  22. I use Speer SP on deer 100gr (.243) gives abourt a 1 " exit wound; my fathers an experienced stalker (40yrs) and will never again use a BT bullet for Roe, internal damage is massive; metal fragments throughout the carcase and requires a lot of cleaning. He uses Nosler Partition 100g in a 6mm Ackley and swears by them, "the most accurate bullet he has ever used"; Deer drop on the spot at vast distances, exit wound similar to my Speers. Horses for courses, everyone will have a viewpoint and potentially a different take on this! You correctly make the point that on the whole Ballistic Ti
  23. ANY gun has a value, if it has the Purdy name on it the value often goes up. There is a lot of information on the web, and many may be able to help here...try and get a bit more information!!!
  24. Mixxy comes and goes, the fox comes and goes and winter comes and goes, etc! The rabbit is always less active during the winter months, they do their best to build up a bit of fat reservse through the Summer/Autumn (this is evident when you skin them) and then stay home a lot more until Spring turns up! December and January I find the worst, followed by November and February. October and March can be variable (both good for me last year) but the other 6 months are usually chaos!!
