  1. Like above 4 is better than nil, It can be hard work ferreting in bad winds, nets not sitting properly, dogs not hearing the thuds of whats going on under there feet, a couple of stop nets, long net wold maybe have done the job, but your purse nets caught and that's all that matters, good luck for season. Atb j
  2. Sorry to hear about your bad luck, have you been in touch with breeder were you got new pug from, did the new one pass something to others etc, in breeding can cause a lot of deformateys in pugs and any stock if bred to close and to often, also when a Jill as had more than one litter in a season the kits can be poor doers due to calcium etc, I know folk like to keep a good line close but they can be down sides as well, I keep a family of albinos and this line go's back years but new blood is entered to stop kits being born with bad backs, legs,. I hope things get better for you. Atb j
  3. Im in Northants and would travel to Yorkshire, Norfolk, and iv had a few days in Scotland and Wales, if you are willing to travel your welcome down for a day or two when I start ferreting 4 days a week again wich will be end of next month. J
  4. Don't really no when they have cubs apart from makes sense to have young in spring, but we all know climate as changed and wildlife changing with it.
  5. it's good to get kids out and let them see wild life first hand, iv had hours upon hours watching badgers and Fox, to see the cubs play is definitely going to make you smile,
  6. If any youngster, newcomer to ferreting would like to come out and join me and my team of pugs, lurchers in the field for hands on experience then pm me telling me a bit about yourself, as we all know permission is hard to get, especially for those just getting into our kind of pest control, bring your own pugs if you like. As above this is for folk starting ferreting in my area, atb j
  7. I would like to offer a few days a week to a youngster who wants to take up ferreting, if you live in the area and would like to get out and get some hands on experience with, ferrets, nets, lurchers then please pm me telling me a bit about yourself. Atb j
  8. I get what your saying, I got a staff bitch over 30 years ago from a lad who used her to draw fox at end of digs, she wouldn't do what he wanted and got booted in the ribs a few times every time she jibed, I took the bitch and with care, time, she turned out a demon on rats, good with ferrets and she would work an old dump killing rats all day, her face would double in size but she would still be wanting to crunch well after jack Russell, border, we're tiring, and she took Charlie. A lot is in the entering. J

  10. when I was a kid me and my pals would walk the woods, Brooks, fields with a mixed pack of bitzas and they gave us loads of fun and put game in the bag, alls Im saying is, most dogs will take to hunting. I'd like to see how many folk on here hunt with breeds that ain't classed as hunters.
  11. Alls I can say is every dog iv had as hunted, maybe my staff wasn't as good as my lurchers or my lurchers wasn't as good at picking up as my old spanial, most pups will learn if taken out, I don't really go for a breed just what suits me,
  12. Iv had a Stafford bull that would hold Coney in nets, Mark 100%,rat as good as any, great busher. my grandfather kept staffs between the two wars and my father said they was always Coney, hare, pheasant hanging after a night out, most poachers back then wouldn't have a lurcher as keepers would be on guard and local Bobby, so it wouldn't be long b4some lead shot found its mark, with a dog that didn't look the poachers cur my grandfather kept food on the table for family of 9.like I say all breeds and x will and do hunt yes some better than others but once hunting there all a joy to have by your
  13. I work a whippet and a bedy whippet x Patterdale, both are used on beating line, ferreting, bushing, rat and the bedyx will drop to ground. It's not the breed it's what we put into them. Go to any rehoming kennels and you will find plenty of terriers, lurchers that ain't made the grade by 12 months old, if only they had been given the chance and entered propley. My dad all ways said it's not the dog it's the trainer at fault. With time good entering any breed will hunt. Atb j
  14. Hobs should be out of season by now if they live outside, my two are, one of my Jill's came back in season though so it's Jill jab for her as she's in with a hob but he ain't bothered. A lad keeps his pugs in his house with lights etc and they seem to breed all year. How much did it cost to have the hob done, my last hoblet passed away, atb j
  15. What area are you from, are you new to ferreting or a old hand wanting to show someone the way. Im sure you will get offers j
  16. Some of the best ferreting iv had was when I first started out, a few nets a pug and a whippet, my advice get a small lurcher, whippet, or a bedlington terrier or a x of above. Dog can do the work of several men around a Warren. Just enjoy your ferreting we all make mistakes and we all have blank days. Some good folk on here with sound advice, Im of out tomorrow, hope I do as well as you. Atb j
  17. Quite a few bagers around here, my whippet would have been in there but when I say leave he knows. Same with the bitch. Thanks folks j
  18. nice looking pup, always a boost for dog and you when you're sapling catches, it's a great feeling, some good folk on here.
  19. My pal an his wife moved over to vancouver about twenty years ago, so thinking about going over for few weeks. He's always of up the forests and as a cabin wich he spends few months a year in. It's Canada or trans siberian train, it's birthday present for fiftieth so might take the train, then go out to see my pal year after. He's asked me to go out there a few times, don't think I'd want to leave Great pics atb j
  20. Your one lucky fella, we are planning a trip to Canada for next year, hopen to spend most of the time in the wilds. great pics, atb j
  21. I was out walking my dogs across the farm were I do a bit of ferreting for coney, rat.they is a vixen who I normally come across and in last two years she's had two litters wich I have watched for many hours. To see the cubs play puts a smile on my face. Iv also bumpt into brock several times, mostly around five am when exercising curs, any how it was around 2pm and it was raining, my whippet stood still sniffing and the bedyx was looking towards a clump of grass, I could see it was a animal but what? I tied the dogs to the gate and ventured forward to see what beasty it was. I couldn't believ
  22. I used to ferret a farm in Northants, it was a good place to start the season with young pugs,a few easy burrows that always had a bunny or two in, iv walked and run my dogs for over 30 years and taken coney, hare, Fox, munty, up until last year that is, farmers daughter married nice fire man who now shoots over it. He as shot every hare, coney, partridge, pheasant, Fox on the land. He leaves piles of game to rot. I have found over a dozen pheasant and several partridge and hares just dumped in Heage row. He shoots fox then leaves them hanging on gates. This is what gives field men, women a
  23. Im looking for a pup and have been for a while, I want one for above and below, so if you find a litter from workers let me know, atb j
  24. I was trying to help them find a pup, but as above I'd travel any place in UK for a pup if it was my kind of dog. And very soon I'll be looking for a pure bedlington and distance won't come into it. J
  25. Hi, your best bet would be to goto a rescue, maybe you will pic a 12month old failure up, so called dog men. Some of the best homes are pet, work homes where are hounds are family but do what they love to do "hunt" go to any rescue and there's dozens of sighthounds etc, how many didn't make the grade [BANNED TEXT] 12months old. And those who breed lurchers etc and let them go to so called working homes just to be dumped etc and given up as failures [BANNED TEXT] they should even be entered then shame on yous. Never put pet homes down, yes are breeds love to work, but as above better a good pe
