Sheep on really big properties here are semi wild and shit scared of dogs. Most of the dogs shot are just walking through the place and not even interested in the sheep. I was talking to a neighbor with a big property and I said this doesn't sound fair but he said it's the dogs presence that's the problem, causing the flock to panic and run into fences injuring quite a few. This is why you are lucky to gain permission here, hunting with any type of dog. You do have a better chance rabbiting with a couple of whippets than pig hunting with a pack of bull blooded dogs though in sheep country.

Scottish consultation on hunting with dogs

It amazes me how anyone would want to protect rats, everyone knows they need to be controlled. A terrier or lurcher kills as quick as a trap if not quicker so greenies and vegans are cruel cnts imo as well as being total fckwits. -
I feed mine a good quality kibble 3/4, the other 1/4, rabbit, roo, chicken frames, scraps and eggs daily as I have chooks. Apart from some deaths from injuries all my dogs live into late teens with little sickness. Main thing is don't keep changing kibble types, my niece was doing this with her Am bulldogs and they always had gut issues. I have fed mine just roo and rabbit at times but they went skinny as fck.

Pick a good kibble, mix some meat, scraps and eggs and stick to it.

Woman facing 7 years in jail and 100 lashes...

Just lucky it wasn't one of my daughters or they'd be opened up and left alive in a pig trap. -
True, anyone that trusts their dog 100% with sheep is having themselves on imo. If loose without supervision, more so if in a pack, any dog can revert back to it's wild ancestors. The most prolific sheep killers over here are rogue kelpies, some say because they are a common breed in the bush but I don't know. The thing is, no dogs a problem if kept under control.

I've always wondered when crossing stock working dogs with hunting breeds that you might end up with dogs drawn to be near stock but not the mentality to hold back from killing them.
-
Yeah I'm using rags in the nest box.
-
I just cut them into small 12 inch squares so they don't tangle.

My two whippets never look at stock. One day I decided to take my denning bitch ferreting with them. Over the first hill the terrier had a sheep by the leg with the whippets on one ear each ?. The whippets let go when I arrived and copped a flogging but had to prise the terrier off. The running dogs have never looked at a sheep again after that. I'd try a shock collar if your dog persists with the sheep before writing him off.

I've always kept ferrets in wire cages with straw in the sleeping box but have copied you guys in my new place and built a court. I've put wood shavings on the floor and rags in the bed so any meat doesn't get covered in shavings and eaten. Was reading that shavings aren't the best for ferrets as they tunnel through and inhale dust. What are people's experience with this ? So far the ferts love the new large area and look happier, healthier and fitter already, cheers.

I thought they worked well together, one bailer, one lugger, lol. I really hope the dog wasn't pts because it was doing a dog's most important job, defending home and family.

Not a nice thing to see, a dog getting water thrown on it.

The big lad's getting dog aggressive, anyone got any tips?
Aussie Whip replied to 3dumb's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
That inbred litter went mostly to experienced pet homes and never showed any human aggression at all. If anything they were more gentle with people than most. I kept a big male and he never fought with his own dog family including his parents and grandfather but couldn't be around strange dogs at all. They were a mix of Reid and Jeep dogs. -

I had an accidental litter, brother to sister of game bred pits. I had to separate them at 5 weeks due to the life or death fights. I've never seen more agro dogs, even adults. I think it's more close inbreeding that causes that level of aggression as the parents weren't nearly as bad. My mate who keeps bees has to keep changing Queens to prevent close inbreeding and ending up with unmanageable stock. -

I had Russells from old working lines, they were very good at their job but could only work one out, even ratting due to being very dog aggressive but never human aggressive. I wouldn't have parted with them at any cost, they were what they were and no training would correct this. -

If it's terrier or bull blooded good luck. Probably extra territorial living in such a small area as a boat. In the dog's mind it's doing it's job. Muzzle him in public and use him as a one out dog when hunting.
