  1. That will clean up in no time buddy in a lathe. Can you get on a lathe? Work the tooling out from center. Water and combustion deposits always make acid of some sort. Why some old ammo may have been used years ago with corrosive priming. The bore is most likely sound from bullet lube.
  2. 4 hours ago, DUNKS said: Thanks for the advice but I did not say I had been told the primers would have difficulty igniting the black powder. Quite the opposite I have read that with a hot primer and small black powder loads the primer may start the load up the barrel before the powder is properly lit. black powder is easy to light but slow to burn. It will be fine, honest.
  3. It's not often I visit so I apologize if I don't explain myself properly now. Some know me for shooting my air rifles on open sights although I did scope one last year one still isn't. My huge fear was any embarrassment I may feel for using a scope but I needn't of worried. In fact it has turned out just fine in fact. The rifle without a scope still is my little snappy 99s. I went plinking yesterday with it and it turns out that my right eye is just too dim now. Reliable hunting is getting as short as 25 yards on the open sights. Where as a cheap 4x32 is fine on my dolly ( a PCP
  4. The magnum primer won't make any difference and most definitely will light the black powder, heck a fart at the wrong angle will set black powder off! It is certain smokeless powders that require hot primers but black powder is not one of them and a hot primer will in no way fail to ignite black powder as someone may have suggested to you. U.
  5. Don't know friend but how bad is it? I ask as if it only need freshening you can do that yourself. U.
  6. I leave contaminated rabbits as some do recover. They are stronger for it and hopefully they will pass on some resistance.... eventually.
  7. I hate the vile disease and would like to know just how the poeple that dropped it slept at night. We have the new bug too now, VHD. U.
  8. Whatever! Just what do you shoot through spring and summer AndyF?
  9. Nothing much today but out for 5am. Sneaking about for fox but did not see any however bumped into a magpie that busy grubbing it never saw me and after what I saw a magpie do in front of me yesterday it was too much! Yesterday while under some holly's a magpie swooped in (no safe shot). Trickled its way down into an unknown to me pigeon nest, pushes the pigeon off it's nest and pinches an egg. Then the Maggie fly's out to an oak and buries the egg (still no shot)! Then the swine flies to another holly and reappears with a small chick of some kind in its beak and flies off!
  10. 100yds off hand to the head. This one was shot at 160 yards off hand across the shoulders. The tough Remington bullet did little damage other than kill it instantly. U.
  11. If I remember correctly I think mine is on at 100 (wmr). But I a touch high at 50. I have to hold under an inch at 50 on squirrel and rabbits heads. Up to 30 I aim on and if it looks 75+ aim on again. 3"to 4" hold over gets on around 150yards. Not very scientific but I get by.
  12. At night wmr would be fine as is hmr. In the day my wmr has reached out to 150yds easily with little hold over. You can buy fmj ammo for wmr to cut down on bruising but in all honesty head shot bunny is fine for table fare in wmr. Hornady do a 25grn wmr loading that is very fast and flat over rabbit shooting distance! Where wmr gains is if you run into charlie, it will penetrate without the risk of a shallow wound, something I have witnessed in the hmr!! For rabbits try HV ammo in your 22. It makes for a genuine 100yarder rabbit gun! U.
  13. Back out with the eley HV HP. Today's total was 6 squirrel's and two jack daws. I missed a 100yd plus crow ? I also found where a fox had just killed a hen pheasant ? U.
  14. Why the above was reposted I have no idea!! Anyway look at this for an old fat man with dodgy eyes! That's with a 7x scope, off hand at 116paces! Yes I could just make out the knot. Eley HV HP. U.
  15. Normal in my book mate. Actually the breeze trickled smoke out the breech as I cradled the rifle topping the magazine up and yes the atom was sweet . These were Winchester's but yes eley prime has its own smell. Over a century ago these little bullets used a mixture of black powder and smokeless! Bet they smelled gggrrreat
  16. You underestimate me my friend. I shoot modern rubbish yes but my heart is for a reliable front stuffer. The first evening I waited by the earth was with a Bess with 12 .375" balls loaded! A gentleman enters via the front, heathens force their way via the rear! Eley still do a lead #3. I plenty of Hull products in #4 in stock. I like #4 also for Charlie. It is rare I use a shot gun for fox today. Only if I know it's going to be close is a rifle left at home. And if the home office was not such a pain the rifle would be a .45 patched ball rifle!
  17. Talking about eley. I loved impax, what a lovely cartridge they are. U.
  18. I don't recall mate. Hymax maybe, the box's have been long gone! And the ink worn off the hulls!

  20. I used up the last of my Winchester laser's today and they delivered perfectly. I actually feel more satisfied with a 22 when it sounds like something is going on! U.
  21. I bought from Bates of Stafford a dozen years ago two box of eley hawk 36g #3 and every one has dropped with authority what ever I pointed them at! Tonight at 35 paces my last one flattened a Vixen, not even a twitch. I found this active earth yesterday. Cubs tomorrow. I must be getting old. I did not enjoy this tonight! U.
  22. Not tried them but heard only good about them.
