Back up at the shoot

After early release from my seasonal house arrest due to good behaviour and a break in the weather I decided to celebrate with a trip to the shoot, on arrival, apparently half 8, the night looked perfect, No moon, very dark with a slight breeze, I headed to my favourite stand at the bottom of the field where I can see right along the oak wood and a fair bit of the tip drive to my left. As I set the caller 60 paces in front of me I heard a fox bark, I had no idea where it came from because me hearing is terrible but thought sexy vixen was worth a go. After half an hour or so with vixen in heat and a few fox calls I’d seen nothing, so tried, pheasants distress, hare calls, rabbit, field mouse and a couple of others, still nothing, I couldn’t be bothered to walk over the piggeries so though I’d give it 10 minutes with vixen in heat and call it a night, 30 seconds in and the unmistakable sight of a fox through the thermal charging from the tip drive, by the time I’d got it in the scope and gave it a whistle to stop it it was no more than 75 yards away, a straight forward shot through the bib and that was the end of that, when I collected my prize I was surprised at the weight of the thing, not a long fox but a short, thick set dog, no doubt full of unpicked pheasants from shoot days, I really must start taking scales with me?

Well our first shoot of the year went well. It was cold but dry and a bit of sun appeared. Bag was 122 head comprising of 57 duck 56 pheasant 7 partridge and 2 pigeon. My own contribution wa

It’s been frosty the last couple of mornings, it’s very welcome , hopefully it will kill a few bugs . Unfortunately the Maize and cover crops don’t like it and they will soon be unviable as a drive .

Goodo,  mine was like that. Not big but heavy.

I don't know how you stand around so long! I have to go looking for them.

There’s a couple of places there where it’s just best to wait it out, where I was last night I can see almost the full field and all the back of the farm, over the piggeries is always good for a wander

I always walk a place but have the same  stands which produce time and time again after many years of sussing spots out. I would say 95 % of the foxes I call are blind calls , if I spot a fox it inevitably ends up in it disappearing. Just shows different parts of the country require different approaches , no good going looking for them up here let the caller do its job. I have always found that when I have travelled South shooting foxes it has always been a lot easier than up North.

The farms I shoot are always good for a walk and call but I’ve definitely got a few places where it’s best to wait it out and call them in, sometimes it can be a couple of hours before it produces a result

bit of pigeon shooting today on the rape at the sheep farm, they are not decoying very well, but there’s loads about and I’ve actually hit a few ?

there are 4 big fields surrounding the chicken farm and there all rape, they've set them all at different times so there not all targeted at the same time.. loads of pigeons in the area locally but not seen any hitting these fields!

the only thing ive seen munching the stuff are the roe:( got asked to get one for a lad the other day but with the bird flu I can't drive the land and im fcuked if im dragging one 3/4mile back to the motor

At least your out , I'm actually better today and going to work. Trying to shoot woodies on winter rape is a right pain especially if they are flocked up , 1 shot and they're gone.  Good luck but it's just nice to be out of the house ?

That’s exactly how it was, flocked up and windy, one shot and off, there’s loads about, I normally wouldn’t bother but the farm owner rang me and as I’m the only person who shoots up there and as I want to keep it that way I thought I’d better go, it’s a bit of fun and I haven’t done it for a long time

One shot and they’re gone, I’ve not bothered much for that very reason. As you say Stav, you’ve got to keep showing willingness if you want to keep the land, or there’s always somebody else who will.

Well I tried following a barking fox last night.  The thing just plays games with me!

I've been feeding it or them.

The swine or swines were there 730pm, midnight and 5.30am. I was there between 9.30 and 11.30pm ?‍♂️
