He was what he was.  Remember his family read what people say on sites like this. His son being a hunting man.  I was always told never to speak ill of the dead. Yet so many authors need to

I suffer with depression myself, and it is a bitch to deal with on many days. Sometimes even getting out of bed to face the world is more than hard work. Not going to go into it too much, as there are

Yea he told a tall tale and maybe dramatised the truth, but let's be honest I haven't read a book that wasn't. Say what you like he lived the way he wanted and I suspect like me as a kid most got

Never seen this before but heard about it, and was told that the fox at the end travelled all the way from S Wales just to be in the film ?

Having seen it now I can easily believe that it arrived in the same sack it left in...

Say what you like he lived the way he wanted and I suspect like me as a kid most got into it after reading his books

I was the usual kid with an air rifle going out shooting at anything that moved song birds etc even the arse of mates lol

So it showed me the error of doing such things and found a new respect to wildlife and hunting

Was given a loan of one of his books and was hooked on them. They were funny and yea educational to a degree.

Got my first ferret and lurcher of the back of reading his books.

He even replied to a letter I sent him when I was 16 still have it.

Many years later I met the man and he was approachable and polite. .

He was a glorified puppy farmer who built a small empire on bullshit and when more knowledgable types like harcombe came along and exposed him he ran off to live in Scotland as a recluse still farming dogs but white Alsatians, as Scot says he still got many of us started in the game, I actually made the 250 mile round trip to go up and see him in a mk1 escourt van on an old chicken farm near Lichfield were him and Hancock were churning out some proper Unworked unproven collie crosses like a conveyor belt, my mate actually bought a pup that went right back to his original dogs and it was absolutely shite, my £2.50 whippet cross from the dogs home knocked spots off it in everything, even foxes that were earning us a living back then, I think it was two year old and around 27" ats before it took a fox, you would have starved to death if you thought one of his dogs were going to keep you alive as he claimed in the book merle, happy days though ?

Apart from the letter and meeting the man you've just described my young life to a tee. He must have put so many lads on to doing more than just air rifles.
