I used a similar pattern (starting and finishing with 2x 8's with 4 straight rows in the middle) and did some 4 ft nets and a batch of 3ft as well which have been great amongst the brambles and hawthorn. Biggest tip I can give based on what I learned is concentrate! All my mistakes came when I got a bit complacent and started knitting while I watched TV or had a conversation with someone!

Don't forget your not just jabbing for parvo. Lep is just as bad and for working dogs probably a damn site easier to pick up. Maybe some people like seeing their dogs in absolute crippling agony or crapping out their own lungs before they have to have them put to sleep. Then again, if they won't pay for a jab then they aren't likely to pay for a pts so the dogs in for a bad time either way.

This was mabel on the 11th December giving me her "I'm just a puppy I don't understand what you mean" look!

I was really tempted to mix a napsak of roundup (commercial stuff, not the b&q crap) and blitz a few miles of hedgerow back in October to encourage the buggers to die back and less to come through the following year but never got around to it. For what it will cost, I'm almost definitely gonna do it this autumn so I can at least have some fun! Only managed to get out 3 times so far this year.

Had most of the above! The labrador is dropping hair for fun. Had a shot bunny at the start of December that was in kit. Roses in the front border still breaking bud (and pruned and stripped ones in pots showing the volume of new growth usually reserved for a decent may) We even spotted a hedgehog 2 nights ago with the night vision and couldn't weigh up if it's late to bed or woken up early!

Completely gutted for you rew. She was a stunning little pup and the one I'd have chosen (as you know when I picked mabel!) So gutted and it's no consolation at all but at least you've still got one from the litter. Take care mate.

I'm saying Nowt... I called mine mabel!

Had a couple of morning frosts now... And to cap it all off its now wetter than an otters pocket up here! Out on Saturday with Northern lad so hopefully it sorts itself out and dries up a bit! At least it'll make any digs a bit easier.

Feed them what you catch or run over in the car to keep costs down, through the summer me are on pets at homes own brand dry food, usually 2 bags for 11 quid and lasts a greedy hob & 2 jills a good few weeks if supplemented with 1/4 bunnies. For gear, a locator, carry box and a dozen nets will get you started - bought new you are looking at £200 or slightly more but look after it and it'll last year's. For year 2 you would benefit from adding more nets. I have built up to 50 ish this year from 12 when started at Xmas last year and find its not even nearly enough on one of my perms.

I'd be happier if I didn't need to dig down 4ft!

Shot bunny's, shot pheasant and pigeon and dry ferret food (pets at home own brand stuff) for when it's too hot or I've nothing defrosted! Also got a load of chicken wings in the freezer (20kg case works out about 20 quid from one of my suppliers) They are also part way through a bag of minced tripe raw dog food stuff as an experiment.

My hob is probably only 3/4 the size he was this time last year. He would eat anything and everything in year 1 and I needed to keep feeding as the jills wouldn't have had enough grub if I cut back. I separated him out for a few months in the summer and controlled his food intake when he was alone and he is a much better size now and also doesn't gorge himself the same. A 3/4 grown rabbit would be nothing but skin and bone after 24 hours with him where the 2 jills would still have about half of theirs left!

My little one, mabel is coming on well. Doesn't listen to a word I say unless it's about biscuits but she is starting. It's always difficult when there are outside influences and distractions to get a pup to concentrate and take up as quickly as if they are alone. Having a manic 4 year old at home all this week hasn't helped either as I've not had chance to properly get her out on her own. Next week I am starting to hit the training a bit harder as the lad will be back at school She is probably the most fearless pup I've ever encountered. It doesn't have an ounce of quit in its bones and s

Good find. And a far better way to waste half an hour than watching some of the tripe on telly!

I used my own 3ft nets last weekend and as I hoped, they caught well, pursed up quickly and nothing got out of them. Made from spun poly on a 2"board, 2 rows of 8 increasing by 1 mesh a row up to 4 rows of 14 then back down again to 2 rows of 8 meshes. 18 rows total. Made half a dozen before the season kicked off so will probably make another 8 or 10 to compliment a boat load of 4 footers

I suppose you could always tie a couple of loops of paracord through the ends of a length of old chainsaw chain.
-
But admittedly, a decent (fellow or similar) pair of secateurs will go through anything up to an inch or more.

Used to use similar things years ago as a kid making dens and ropeswings in the woods. Every single one we ever bought snapped on its first use so we swapped to an old folding pruning saw

I was given a dozen nets at about 3ft with my ferrets and they caught everything that hit them last year so I've made anot her dozen at the same size as well as a load at 4ft.

I think I might have lost half my sofa.

That ones coming home with me!!! They are starting to look a little bit more like proper dogs each week, compared to 3 weeks that look so different. Cant wait till they are ready!

A lot of people I've spoken to have sworn by hemp nets citing the etiquette of traditional nets for a traditional pursuit as the primary reason they use them. I always give a wry grin when I ask them what locator they use and the embarrassed look of hypocrisy they have on their face as they try to find a reason not to say 'deben mk3' is highly amusing! I've not used hemp myself (yet) but from how the spun poly nets I've got have performed I cannot see any reason to go low tech and increase my workload cleaning up and sorting out after each outing.

With reactions and catching that good you could play in the slips for England! I suppose thats a prime example of expect the unexpected!

Mine were last year's kits and the first couple of outings they seemed to skim the surface rather than going down. I would imagine it's nothing more than experience and possibly a little bit of apprehension on the ferrets part being young and inexperienced. After a couple of outings mine started to go deeper into the warrens and pulled out better numbers than the first couple of visits. Just persevere and give them chance to learn what it is about.
