Really good input. Thanks everyone.

Wasn't there a programme in America about the same thing. Something like 'To Catch a Predator' or something like that? They basically pretended they were a kid online and would then try to get the pedo to meet at a certain address. When they came into the house they were met with police, camera crews, and a host asking a million questions.

Haha, that's how it feels sometimes. Like a clamp on my balls! To be fair mate, there are awkward circumstances that I'm not in control of at the moment that mean I'm not at liberty to pursue that course of action (long story). It totally sucks! Worse still, I'm not a dog person at all!!! She has always wanted dogs, and I've always wanted to NEVER have dogs. So, taking them ratting....it's the one thing that might make me start to like them. Instead of being time and money leeches, they'll have a purpose! Ratting....and I'm not allowed to do it. So, for me, they are just pets, and I have n

Sorry mate. I meant all encompassing. I think my example of ferreting may have been a bad one, as that involves dogs for the runners that get away. I meant things like shooter's, do they bother going our with just the dogs for coursing? Does anyone into ferreting ever leave the ferret at home and set traps? Do any snare-guys pick up an air rifle and go out with that? Do any falconry people go out with traps? More like that kind of thing. It's just because I'm trying a new style of hunting to make myself a better overall hunter. I want to learn ferreting after a while and all kinds

Do you ever use bait to get them to stay in place for long?

I'm just learning about snaring and working with traps. As everyone knows I'm the crappest ratter on the forum, and about 95% of my hunting pellets are going towards rat heads. As if by magic, searching the newer areas has given rise to new members. This has gotten me wondering, how many people use multiple hunting systems? Multiple techniques as in 2 or more...stuff like snaring, ferreting, trapping, shooting, coursing, terriers, and things like that? Or do people generally just stick the the one discipline?

I'm often camping out on Dartmoor, so it's all good with me.

In a litter you can get enough variation. If your whippet has no prey drive for rats, get it bitten by a rat. That'll cause enough resentment to make it smash every rat it meets. One of the best ratting dogs I've seen is a lurcher (greyhound x Jack Russel...weird mix, but mum was the greyhound lay down, and the Jack Russel saw an opportunity and went for it). We have 2 whippets with pretty much ZERO prey drive. Dash saw a rabbit in a field and went over to it and started licking it. We have a total of 18 animals in our house, and the dogs have been totally bleached of any prey drive. I

That's good to know. Thank you. Have you done much snare work with rats?

We have our dogs indoors, but they sleep in a crate. If we used a kennel, we'd just pop the crate in there. To keep them warm in the winter (the crate is in a conservatory style bit with crap roofing) we have a Tuff-Stuff dog bed permanently in the crate, then we place a double duvet over the crate when they go to sleep, and a small fleece blanket over the top of the bed. The duvet provides plenty of insulation, the blanket provides extra comfort, the Tuff-Stuff provides cushioning from the cold crate. All in all, it works for us. If we had an insulated outdoor kennel, the same system woul

Really pleased Socks. That's great news. Do you get compensation for the 18 hour stay?

That makes sense. I as thinking quite inverse though. If I can successfully snare rats when there are only a few around, then I have learned the skill well and the successes would be down to ability and not luck. BUT, the reason I'm seeing it that way is because I plan to snare only as a supplement to my normal air rifle pest control technique...shoot them in the head! The idea is to catch the gun-shy rats.

Still no response from BASC. The issue I'm facing is the stops. It needs to be at 13cm, if I remember correctly. The thing is, most rats will just hop straight through there. There should be a more specific outline about the difference with rabbit snaring and rat snaring.

I remember seeing a load of footprints when sat on a ski-lift. They went from one patch of trees to another. Over the week we kept seeing these prints. It wasn't until we were leaving that we found out they were wolf prints! The prints were on one side of the mountain, the skiing section is just a few meters off the part with the tracks. If you can imagine a mountain with a large backwards slightly crooked L shape. on it. The _ of the backwards L is at the bottom of the mountain, and leads from the bottom of the ski runs to the ski lift. The I part of the mountain is roughly where the ski runs

The phantom...break action...loud. That's my only criticism. I actually have no experience with one, but I've seen VERY FEW quiet springers.

That's okay, I'm bringing it back! One man revolution!!! haha It's cool. The idea of catching quarry while you lay in bed. My plan is to go and shoot as much as possible to make as big a dent in the rat population, but then to set the snares and traps for the gun shy ones.

Congratulations Phil. 40 years married! We're coming up to 2 years now. Thinking about the "I'm good at X" question, I asked my wife. She sighed and said "You're very good at being spontaneous" which made me smile. Then she completed the sentence "but it's bloody hard work dealing with you when you're like that! It's like dealing with a massive child. Like when you knocked out the fireplace with your kettle-bell because you wanted to see what was behind it, or when you went to Dartmoor in the snow because you thought it would be fun to drive on ice, or when you tried to play in the quicksa

I'm not sure my wife would be overly keen on me putting that information online. Nor the videos....urm.....if there were any......which there aren't.............honest.............. I'll start the write up for the near loss of my leg soon.

All for rats. So I'm going 2 strand and smaller loop size. I'll practice a lot and try to get it into a fine art like Woodga has, then I'll make some posts on here about what's working and what's not, then I'll listen to what everyone's saying and practice some more with the modifications I've been told about. I think Saturday night will be the proper trial session. Just need to remember my snares this time!

Alright kids, lets just sit back, take a deep breath, and........hey look, I'm wiggling my toes again! MAGIC!!!

Nothing much really, just a saluki with half a brain, not much to ask or is it ? Pushing your luck with that request! You've got better odds blagging this yacht for free.

I'm glad. Makes me feel like a beast now that I take drugs! I was going to start smoking a pipe. Not a normal one, one like Sherlock Holmes, but the pipes I was looking were in the £250+ range, and I couldn't justify spending that on something I'd use for about a week then lose somewhere. Interesting stuff Remy, not many people ever spend much time completely alone, must be a tester, lol. Why not make your own pipe? Lump of seasoned cherry off ebay, maybe a ready made stem? few basic tools, good project? You clearly have not seen my DIY ability. I can build a shelter l

Wow, I'm really pleased everyone enjoyed that so much. I don't normally speak about stuff I've done in the past. A very hard working father and very fortunate childhood seems to have a lot of adventures that people don't want to hear. I've got so much I'd love to talk about in regards to survival and random adventures I've had. Genuinely touched my everyone's reaction. Thanks guys...but don't expect a group hug. Also I am always worried my ability with the written word sucks due to my dyslexia, but that doesn't stop me trying. If you want to hear about scuba diving, snorkelling, nearly
