  1. Throughout the ages dates have been changed and years adapted. Monarchs have had the starts of years changed to their birthdays, or calendars adapted so that their era of rule has occurred at a seemingly more prestigious date. I'd like to get people's thoughts and ideas on this topic. Personally, I'm undecided and not overly sure about what impact such things would have. The dominant 'phantom time' advocates say that we are actually living in the 1700's-1750's and not the 2010's. If they were right, would there be much of an impact to the world? I really don't think there would
  2. Sounds like stupid people who should never have taken on a dog! They basically say "We have very little spare time and a disabled child so we decided to get a high energy dog!" That's just pure stupidity. Anything crossed with a Cocker is going to be energetic. Unless they have a lot of time or the dog is going to be a working dog, then they're probably going to struggle. That's almost identical to how we ended up getting our 3rd dog (whippet x Italian greyhound). Young couple just (as in a couple of weeks ago) had a child and decided it was a good idea to get a hyperactive puppy a
  3. To answer your question, yes that's fine. Bait internally is okay to use. I know that a lot of farmers are buying up poisons in bulk. More than once I've been told that bait will be outlawed in X number of years. Opinions vary from 5-10 years. But most seem to think it'll be around the 8 year mark that any poison will be illegal. It's all the extra hassle of secondary poisoning and things like that. Also, there are a lot of rats becoming immune to certain poisons. You can definitely place bait inside a chicken house to take out rats, but you'd not want it anywhere near the chickens...o
  4. fox have no protection in law what so ever other than the hunting act please copy and paste the part of the WCA that proves otherwise I stand corrected! Just checked that what I had been told against the legislation, and what I had been told, and thus what I had repeated was wrong. So I apologise. http://www.rspca.org.uk/adviceandwelfare/wildlife/laws *More common animals, such as the fox or rabbit, are not protected* Just goes to show, do your own research and don't believe everything you're told.
  5. , was he a real red Indian though .? off course he was a real Indian Ray ! he would not have been allowed to wrestle else , one saturday i watched him fight Massambula, Massambula stuck the crust on Billy three times and it looked all over for poor old Bill but somehow he managed to climb off of the canvas and give him the old Tommahawk chop If someone has a maneuver called the Tomahawk Chop, there's no questioning where he's from!
  6. I just said this on another rat shooting write-up, but it applies here too. Whenever I see a rat I've shot being dragged away to be eaten by another rat, I think about secondary poisoning and smile.
  7. Good shooting. It's properly minging watching them eat their dead. Whenever I see that I can't help but think....thank goodness for secondary poisoning.
  8. That's cool. Foxes are an important part of UK wildlife, so I'm pleased with that. We have some friends who feed the foxes and badgers in their garden. They even recognised mange in one of the foxes and treated the food. They watch it all on CCTV the next day, really cute stuff. When they're like that, you can't call foxes a pest. So really it becomes illegal to shoot them. If they're not damaging property or killing livestock/live-flock, then shooting them would be against the law. Wildlife act. Having said that, if I was out with a 12 gauge and saw a fox around one of the chi
  9. For an extra bit of fun, get your phone out and take 5 photos of thing you think could be evidence of rabbits, then upload them here. It could be a hole dug under a fence, a burrow, gaps in the grass by a fence, chewed plant stems, etc. If you're forced to take a photo it'll make you pay more attention. You'll get feedback on the pictures and what you're looking at. You'll also get bits of helpful information that you might not have expected.
  10. If you can do a good job on one piece of land, you'll build a rep and add permissions much faster. Check your land, see what's around, learn the basics on there. What you don't want is a massive piece of land, then to do a crap job. The farmer will not be happy with you, and you risk him giving you a reputation that you'd rather not have. The manager of the main farm I go ratting in, took over another farm and is now managing 2 sites. Because I've given him his best year of rats in his time at the farm, plus saved him A LOT of money getting equipment fixed, and reduced down-time an
  11. Only problem, I plan to set my snares inside!
  12. The first time you pop around a field, having a gun with you can actually distract you. If it's your first field, leave the gun in the car and ignore the field. Walk the edges. Take 3 steps, then stop for a minute and look around. Look for rabbit runs, fence holes, grass gaps behind fences or in hedges, and things like that. Walk all the way around the field like this. It'll take AGES! But do it in the heat of the day in good light. You are not looking for where to shoot from. All you're doing is practicing fieldcraft and checking for signs of rabbit activity. Is it boring? Yes! Is it an impor
  13. I need to check this, because it seems whip snaring is illegal for rabbits, but could be legal for rats. At the moment I'm just thinking of popping a snare by the opening's they come through. It'll just be to tether them in place to dispatch in the morning. Unless a cat gets to them first.
  14. I was going to stop smoking the odd cigar, but I'm no quitter! I thought October was meant as a "No drinking" month (thus Sober-for-October), like Movember is to grow a mustache to raise awareness for Prostate Cancer (brilliant cause by the way).
  15. Nice work. Even though you be thinking "Crap, there's a load more I can't see" the truth is, 2 rats can become 40 very quickly. Don't forget, rats live a long time (2-4 years)! So any number that you take out is potentially 200 more rats taken out of the system!
  16. No mention of 'Granfather' the native American that taught Tom Brown all his wilderness survival skills. Touch the Earth is well worth a read. But it's more about Native American wisdom and proverbs.
  17. Alright Chris. We've all been there mate. You think that's bad....you've clearly not ready any of my rabbit shooting posts. I had a big fat zero for 3 or 4 session in a row. The trick with rabbits, lay there and wait for them to come out. But you need to be SILENT! If your friend starts talking to you, then he's the reason no rabbits are coming out. When they start coming out, that's when the fun starts. I'd say that around 90% or more of your time out hunting will be spent sitting there waiting. Standing and walking around is a good way to not see much until they are running away.
  18. good thread that , how did he die,? in the film's he died on a Indian reservation as a old man , but that just a film .? Add the words alcoholic old man and you'd be correct. Rumour has it his grave was robbed by a certain 'secret society' and his skull is kept in the "Skull and Bones" club house.
  19. To be fair, in my experience, a small deer and a hefting bull cow, or even sheep do look very similar. Hell, I once even shot a house mistaking it for a deer, when I was over in.....urm......I mean.... I don't know what you're talking about. Joking aside, if you can't get a clean kill, don't take the shot! I guess, by definition of poaching, they would be considered poachers. However, they're just not very good at it. Really hope it doesn't ruin anything for those of us that take shooting more seriously.
  20. I've got a load of traps, but am going to try popping snares along some of the routes they run and 'gateways' e.g. holes in the wall. The traps will be baited and put in the feeding areas.
  21. Yes. But 0.6 x7 strand would be a hell of a lot more! 4.2. Or am I reading that totally wrong and J Darcy means 7 stranded plastic coated wire, totaling 0.6?
  22. Why so large? Everyone else has been recommending 0.4 brass 2 strand.
