i had a cz 22lr and a annie hmr and liked the hmr more. i sold the 22lr and then wish i hadnt.
i think they both have a place. but if i had to pck just one i would stick to the 22lr. it is cheaper to run. and if your shooting most your rabbits around yards or less.
why not shoot them with a rifle where abox of ammo is around 4 pound a box and not £10 + like the hmr is
you could get the dm80 mod but there isnt going to be alot of difference. i had a numbe rof mods for mine and found the old style dm80 about the best. as you say you cant stop the supersonic crack.
but the crack at the rifle seamed more tamed by the dm80
if you want a centrefire why not get a 223 in stead of the hornet. if they wont let you have it on 1st grant say you go shooting with the guy you said culls the deer.
if you do go shooting with him i cant see why there be a problem getting it 1st time round. my old man got centrefire 1st time round.
yes he has mentoring on it which im his mentor. but it only last a couple of months and a letter from mentor will go along way.
your have your foot in the door with centrefires in the future then. it wont cost you any more to add one.
if you want 223 the i would get them all.
if
there all as accurate as each other. remmington, tikka, sako, winchester, savage.
all depends on what you have to spend. and what rifle you want, wood, plastic stock, what length barrel, light or heavy,
depends on what you have to spend if your after deer and fox then a nice fixed mag s&b would be good. i perfer more mag myself. and you can allways set the mag to what you want.
a friend of mine done this. he shot a vixen that had cubs. and felt bad so left rabbits outside the den for them.
then when they where older and come out more he then took care of them
i would think hard before going fixed mag on a 223. if it was for deer yes but at night in the lamp a bit of extra mag can help.
if you get a s&b scope make sure you get the right crosshair as there pretty thick and can cover the bulls eye your shooting at. and rabbits at long range
the logic is mate most rabbits are shot up to ish yards under the lamp when in the 4x4. this in turn makes the 22lr a better choice. why pay up to 15 pound a box for hmr ammo to kill rabbits at yards away at most.
when a 22lr at 4 pound a box will do the job cheaper and more silent.
the powder would have burnt out before then. the 18 inch barrel test your on about was found to be the best choice for length of hmr barrel for consistancy.
for what little fps you lose i wouldnt worry about it.
i would give the barrel a good patch out before zeroing. as most rifles come with stuff in the barrel to protect it when shipped. get this stuff out before you shoot it.
as long as the rifle is in a case and there is not ammo in the rifle your fine. dont matter if you leave the mag in the rifle. as long as there is no ammo in the mag.
ive had them all the sak,dm80 old and new model, wildcat also.
there isnt much difference in noise on any of them. if i had to pick tho i would still go for the older dm80. i had on on my annie hmr and it was very well built, easy to clean and done a cracking job on the muzzle blast
if you want to keep the rabbits then head shot only really anyway. so weather you shoot it with 22lr or hmr the meat will be fine.
had them both and well the hmr does give more range ost rabbits are under 100 yards at night imo anyway. i no it depends on the land you shooot over. but in general they are.
so 22lr is alot cheaper to feed and the silentness of it is a bonus. saying that the hmr is loud compared to 22lr. but have shot a number of rabbits with hmr also. and not spooked the one sat next to it.
i think from the 4x4 22lr is the best tho
dont forget a lot of viixens will be to ground now and wont show till the cubs have fur on them. if you see any foxes about it will more then likely be the dog fox lokking for foood.
to take back to the den for the vixen. once the cubs have fur on them and able to control there body heat. the vixen will leave them and hunt for herself
well for longer range the heavier the bullet the less afected by wind it is. because they have better bc.
but if your rabbit shooting you are not going to want to use a high powered centrefire on rabbits.
