  1. Same as above, I make up a fishmeal/milk protein mix with some liver powder and GLM. I add a bit of salmon oil - which helps it roll too. No flavour though, but that's your choice. If you add a flavour don't use any more than 3ml per 6 egg mix. If eels are a problem use a birdfood/milk protein bait. Don't wait till it warms up, the winter's the best time of year in many ways.
  2. I think you summed it up perfectly there mate - "moderation is the key". We all like to see them, they're a wonderful native species, I'm sure no-one wants an otter witch hunt.... But there have been many illegal releases, or poorly considered re-introductions that have meant the otter populations in certain locations are booming - and pose a serious problem. They're not only a problem for fish stocks, they take birds too. A lot of rare species use wetlands, and otters will happily hunt for them - successfully. Sign it or don't, but there is a big problem out there that won't get b
  3. Dear Anglers, Please take a look at this e-petition, and sign it. http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/59529 It will help a great deal if you could share this link on other websites, forums, social media etc. If your area is not affected, please still consider signing and sharing. It's only a matter of time before they arrive... If you are unsure of the damage they cause, a quick internet search will give you plenty of info. Thanks (Could this be pinned to the top please?)
  4. Hi John, if you like fixed spool reels you'd do well to look at the shimano range. They have plenty to choose from for all budgets. If you want a multiplier I'd recommend a penn 525 mag 2, a reel that will do everything you need from the beach. For rods, see about a second hand one as you'll get more for your money. But for a new one I'd recommend a daiwa or greys. Hope this helps, you can always message me if you need further advice on anything.
  5. I do the Dover district but sometimes travel a bit further but not enough money in it to cover a wide area. Having spoken to a few farmers near me they find them bloody annoying but not damaging enough to warrant paying someone to remove them time and time again - and never heard of their stock being infected or killed by soil bourne bacteria. No doubt a different story entirely in other parts of the country.
  6. At least you're getting some decent farm work, none of them will pay in my neck of the woods. I am confined to gardens, estates, housing associations etc.
  7. Interesting. I catch all the time in the 'feeding area' with duffus traps. I use talpex as well but for different reasons to yours most of the time. I won't say why because it takes time and experience to learn your own ways of doing the job. Not something I will hand out to people I don't know. No disrespect to you for sharing some knowledge though.
  8. Still at them in Kent but won't be long now until they're finished for the year. This week the nests I've done have been very quiet and there are queens around that have left the nests looking for a place to hibernate. Was doing some woodwork today and a queen landed on the bench - which was where it met its' end. I often wonder why I kill queens, as they're theoretically next years jobs..... force of habit I suppose.
  9. Order received today, and the quality exceeded my expectations in every respect.
  10. In Kent at the moment, as much as we are waiting for them, the codling aren't showing in numbers yet. We are still having good catches of thornbacks and bass from the shore when conditions are right. This is a 9lb 10oz caught, I also had rays of 9lb 1oz, 5lb and 2lb in the same session recently
  11. These are very hard to come by second hand, if you have no joy ring daiwa spares who will sell you a couple.
  12. Used to have some great sport with the catapult at a lake I used to fish, after dark we would bait and lamp the rats from our deckchairs, not easy at first! Our competitions with snap traps over a night or two's fishing were always fun too. Sorry, a little off topic but if they ask you again you could try baiting with some trout pellets & lamping with the airgun, or as previously suggested smoke em out to some terriers.
  13. About the same as what Matt's experiencing round here, the nests are in different stages of advancement. I had one job where there were 2 nests in one garage roof, one large and one just started - I thought it'd be an abandonned attempt at first but it was active. Lots of hornets around I've noticed, I enjoy observing them and they're usually very docile even when you get close. Moles fairly quiet round here but they go in fits and starts - usually after we've had a bit of rain. Had one job where wasps had taken over a mole run so hopefully I'll get a call back there in a few weeks.
  14. So is there anything of interest other than doing some shopping?
  15. Never been interested in going to one of these pest control exhibitions, I can order what I need from their catalogue. Would rather be at work tbh, but maybe I'm missing out?
  16. Only as a last resort after other methods have been used and failed... If there wasn't such a big industry behind feral pigeon proofing, I'm sure it'd be legal to dispatch them in almost any situation.
  17. Off topic I know, but before you go out snaring make sure you're familiar with re-tensioning them. Takes a bit of practice but easy enough once you've got the hang of it. Will save you time when out in the field if you're not already familiar with how to do it.
  18. Carrion crow call birds available in east kent area, free of charge. Pm me if interested. Steve.
  19. Good going fellas, very impressive results I just can't get work like that in my part of the country, but would love to be mole catching on that scale. I only ever get garden work or small holdings - the farmers don't seem to be interested in my services in my neck of the woods.
