I'm envious, I really enjoy mole work but it doesn't seem to be in high demand round here. I get a couple of jobs a week at best.

Checking one of my monthly contracts today and found a baby rabbit inside one of the large bait boxes. As usual I tapped on the top of the box before opening (no snap trap inside just a monitor) nothing came out so I opened the box and it was just sat tight in there. 'cos the terrier was in the van (food premises), I just let it go. This is the first time I've encountered anything other than the odd live mouse or dead rat inside boxes. I'm interested to hear what oddities other people have found in their bait boxes...

Has Anyone Had This Problem With Terriers
outandabout replied to briggo88's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
My 12 month JRT bitch does the same mate, good as gold until she catches sight of a bunny or gets a whiff of scent. Then she's a different dog. She's coming along well and has great prey drive but I'd like a bit more control in case she runs out into a road. -

Qualifications Or Self Taught?
outandabout replied to snakey's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Self taught with some help, and did various courses & qualifications after I started up. There's no substitute for getting your hands dirty, although using the knowledge learned from the classroom will help. I found the RSPH level 2 very useful, beyond just having the qualification. It's good that there are few (none that I know of) decent courses for rabbit control. Keeps the national companies away from these jobs and leaves it to people with traditional skills. Still learning every day at work, and probably always will be. No course can teach you experience. Good thr -
The Future, Where Do We Stand As Trappers?
outandabout replied to snakey's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
I think that current legislation covers all the bases well. Only approved spring traps can be sold and used, we have sensible rules on how traps may be set, and how often they must be inspected etc. Most genuine pest controllers may also at certain times make additional visits to the required legislated interval, to ensure the work is carried out humanely - these visits made purely for animal welfare reasons. I hope that legislation won't tighten up, and from my experience I think the current legislation is perfectly adequate to ensure our activities are humane. As for a negative image -
Hit & Miss With The Moles
outandabout replied to Yokel Matt's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
" Not sure about the mentality of some folks wanting to educate their potential clients in the art of wanting. Im sure there is a market for it, but why would you do yourself out of work? Not the best business plan long term " Thats a good point you make there, Matt. Thats what annoys me about " Molecatchers register ",they make out its for mole catchers, but they are also more than happy to train your customers up, as well !! Maybe they think we are all half-wits, but its actually themselves,in that respect.......he-he Good point, I remember before the city & guilds gassing courses, -
Here in Kent a couple of weeks back we had a covering of snow and the moles went mad, On a couple of jobs I was watching them throwing earth up through the snow. But now the snow's gone they don't seem as active, and less call outs.

Hit & Miss With The Moles
outandabout replied to Yokel Matt's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Too true, but there's more to it than reading books etc eh? I have been to loads of customers who have had people charge x amount - sometimes over £100 and not caught even one mole. -
In the same boat bud, on another thread where I asked for advice I was told give the dog time and be patient so I'm hopeful.
-
Sorry to hijack your thread, but your patt sounds exactly like my russell pup (11 months). Recall is spot on until there's something to hunt, then she just ignores me. Caught her first rabbit today mind, so it's not all bad. I'd also be interested to hear any tips or advice on this too. Good luck with your patt mate, lovely dogs.

Cheap Or Expensive Mole Traps
outandabout replied to scotfalconer's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
The one you can see in the picture was put in this evening, so just hopeing it works out..ive never used them before. Ive got the cheap talpex types all over the place, i never seem to fail with them, its almost 100% catch rate for me using them and i dont find live moles in them so they do the job.. I love the fenn trap aswell..works spot on almost everytime i put one in. Atb Marty If you haven't caught one in the morning consider moving it. The trap doesn't look like it's set tight enough for my liking. Set it in tighter in another good location and it should do the job, Sor -

Cheap Or Expensive Mole Traps
outandabout replied to scotfalconer's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Probuk, I got some cheap talpex type traps years ago and found nothing wrong with them. Good strong springs, well made and still working just as well now. If I get a half barrel bunged with soil I usually think it's something I've done wrong. I don't rush putting in traps but we all make mistakes sometimes. Think why the mole might have backfilled it, and set again in the same place with more care. You should catch it within the next 24hrs. Others may have different opinions, would be interesting to hear. To the OP the flat pack traps are brilliant, a couple of tweaks and they're as go -

Glad I'm Not A Postman!
outandabout replied to outandabout's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Fair enough I've not used them personally (other than mk4 for squirrels) but thought it sounded dangerous. -
So how do you think you did today?
-
Just seen a mk 6 "fenn" trap on fleabay............... "it is sent already set (safety catch on) so be careful when taking out of packaging." Isn't this a tad dangerous or is it just me being picky???

Nice catch, well done

Nice looking dogs there mate

Thanks to all for the advice, yeah very pleased with her desire to hunt - she's keen as mustard. I'll be patient and not lose my rag with her, and keep her on the lead around problem areas! Not a bad first dog all round though, very clever and well trained apart from this one problem. Hopefully a good little terrier in the making as a couple of you have said. She's only interested in live game or holes where something's in residence. She's not interested at all in dead bunnies etc.

Shouldn't be too in depth on the legislation, but self locking snares is a favourite question apparently, and it came up in my exam last year. You could probably answer something like the spillage example question with bullet points. Makes it clear & concise. I might be wrong but might save you getting muddled up writing a complicated answer? Ah yes, they'll almost definitely ask what mammals can be controlled using aluminium phosphide pesticides. I'll leave it there. Good luck for Friday.

What is a pheromone? Why would a manufacturer use a pheromone in a formulation intended for insect control? State the type of metomorphosis for 5 different insects (they give you a list) What is the correct procedure when e.g. you are handling powder insecticide - decanting or weighing out, and you spill the container, covering yourself and spilling onto the floor. They do ask a couple of health and safety questions, e.g. working at height etc. Are self locking snares legal in this country? Explain the answer above, or if the bloke who wrote the paper is being mean, und

smooth off the base of the run after digging out, tight trap as said above, and don't be afraid to push it down firmly. Another thing some overlook is covering the trap up properly, you need to make sure no light or air can get in. Just my tuppence worth of course
