  1. Yeah as above, smoke them out if you want the dogs to hunt them. It's illegal to catch & release them for dogs. Fenns will be effective though, or have a look at the recent snaring thread for more ideas. Good luck in getting the problem sorted mate
  2. I use a stainless trowel mainly, and a plasterer's pad saw for shallow runs. Might try a cut down border spade after reading recent comments though
  3. There's a myth that you won't catch a mole in the feeding area...... Like you nicepix, I won't tolerate grass or other detritus - but I don't smooth the base of the run any more. Controversial maybe but I'm still doing just as well. I dug out my grandfathers old scissor traps the other day. They haven't seen the light of day for many years, but to my surprise there was a pack of mothballs in with them! Wonder what old wives tale/theory was behind using those?
  4. That may be so, but on ALL my jobs where the customer has 'had a go' they've bought chinese 'tin plate' traps. They cannot hope to catch anything, even if they set them right and in the right place. The garden centres & online outlets are unlikely to stock a UK made premium product because of price and lack of appeal to the mass market. I don't think there's much danger of us losing out on jobs because of this. (I hope anyway ) Tiercel has hit the nail on the head in what he says, and this further protects us from the public catching their own moles I've got no problem with a
  5. I used to help my grandad set mole traps when I was a kid, decent quality scissor traps bought from the local agri merchant. British made, decent construction and had reasonable springs. These were readily available and they worked. Different story now, chinese tat on offer from 99% of shops and online. I know what you're saying JD, but even if FP update their traps, I think it's far worse than it's ever been for the amateurs.
  6. knocking hills down??? That's the customers job
  7. Would love to catch just ONE like that, good going mate
  8. That's interesting. The new ones had been sat in their box in the back of the van for a while, I bought them some time last year and only just needed to use them. These don't have a stainless steel shell on them, but maybe they've updated their range in the meantime. Will be interesting to hear your thoughts on the BR's. I can order them through killgerm, but from what others have said (mentioning no names ) I'd be wasting my money
  9. A pair of the showa gloves arrived yesterday, have to say I'm very impressed with them. And at last..... WARM HANDS!!!!!! If these can stand a couple of weeks use, I won't be going back to nitrile gloves. Thanks to all for the recommendations
  10. Great post nicepix, I though the flat packs had changed a bit. The newer traps did seem wider to me so that confirms it. I've always squidged in the sides on all my duffus anyway - but as Matt says, you're limited by the wires to an extent. In addition, the newer FP's I bought were tempremental out of the box. Many of them would fire after 30 seconds of being set. The hook at the top of the trigger seems a couple of mm shorter than the old ones. Luckily with a pair of pliers (in the pouring rain I might add), I got them all into a serviceable condition. They still have enough power, I'
  11. I've got my 2015 catalogues through, so can't see any reason to attend a show?
  12. lol, yeah only people who benefit are the course providers and the chinese trap sellers. If these claims were true though us mole catchers would be rolling in it - so I'd have to agree with you that those estimates are a load of crap. I see cheap scissor traps abandoned in gardens quite regularly
  13. You'll be lucky to find someone willing to share their knowledge. Even if you find someone to help, they might be shite at it My advice would be get the fourteenacre DVD, a handful of traps, get out there and have a go.
  14. Yea i've seen those from UKtraps, but never considered buying any! I wonder do they sell, is their much demand for them! The items they manufacture look bloody good, but yeah I doubt there's all that much demand. Hope I'm wrong, I like their website and range of products. I've had good service from them in the past, but only bought some fenns.
  15. Wire to a tree or something close, or wire up to a thick hazel peg - small hole drilled about 1" from the top. Was looking at the uktraps pegs the other day, they look tidy but I'll make my own if I need something more stout than hazel.
  16. Never tried these traps, are they any good in the vertical tunnels? Might get a few to try out. I see fourteenacre stocks them...
  17. Yes, the main run isn't the only place to target and sometimes you miss some if you don't trap the 'feeding' areas. I've often thought moles have more than one nest and choose between them depending on conditions at the time, so don't always use the same main runs. Could be wrong here? Just my own theory - but sometimes finding a main run is a nightmare/not possible. I don't need to find a main run to clear an area, but it helps if I can. First double of the year for me yesterday, caught well out into 'the feeding area'. Not saying main runs are crap, just that there's more tha
  18. Thanks lads, I'll try some of those suggestions. Yellow gloves sound a good idea so you don't lose 'em (not forgetting looking cool ) Aside from excrement on molehills, I need to look half presentable for other jobs throughout the day. I can't turn up at offices or a household with hands covered in mud, it doesn't wash off easily when you're trapping a lot.
  19. I wear gloves all the time when mole trapping. I don't want to be touching cat/dog/fox/badger shit. Occasionally there's one you don't notice! I don't care a jot about human scent on traps, it's just a PPE thing. Disposables are my choice, but is there anything 'better' I could be using?
