  3. Just get its basic trainning sorted first, then start taking it to places where there is plenty of scent and let nature take its course. He'll either do it or not in time.
  4. a guy who rats with us, gets hunt terrier rejects. They are ok at most things except what hunts wants them for. He's got a couple of jacks, a black and I think he got a lakie recently. There are a lot of earth dog rejects out there.I'll back up and agree with kye and say get a Plummer.
  5. always had intelligent dogs. They will chase rabbits but once they goto ground they don't bother, they have the attitude that they'll find another.Charlies is different. When they were young we had the odd mishap but as they mature they lost this habit.
  6. Breed is irrelevant.we all have are types that we prefer, but sj wants to know what makes a good worker. i say ability to find.
  7. Nose and drive. Not got these then it is not a Plummer. A plummer is'nt and out and out digging dog some are some not. Some lines are are more prone than others. Admittdly most Plummer owners these days want a ratting dog not an earth dog. Mine are all coalville lines and they do the job for me,they suit me. Plummers were breed to be a jack of all trades, which they are.
  8. I'll start the ball rolling, with the statement of each to there own.I know it sounds a cop out, but depending how you want your fox will dictate the confirmation of your working terrier.Whether its a bolter or digging dog the ability to find is in my opinion the number one attribute for a working terrier.
  9. I've got good Plummers, that are good at most jobs. But this thread will turn into the normal slagging match.so thats all I've got to say.
  10. We get it every year from early August,I know a couple of farmers drop them.My terriers attempt to kill every one we find to try and slow the spread. With this rain it will only get worst

  14. well done sj,I'll find nitevisions skinner some work this season.
  15. The problem with size will always rage ,regardless of breed. As different areas have different size earths. For example around here it is mainly dug out rabbit warrens or bales.Completely different terrain to borrans of elsewhere. No one will agree.I do agree that enough out crossing has happaned
  16. See if you have a local fell and moorland club in your area or terrier club. Then they can get to know you in person.
