A grand tale of a grand breed.... -
Suppose I've had a few weird encounters but the one that sticks..... Bout 20 years ago, out shining a huge nature reserve thats teaming with bunnys. A place for numbers that i'd always lamped, mostley on my own. So, a good hour in and plenty in the bag I had to cross through a large pine wood to get to the fields on the other side. Put the dog on slip, as I didn't want him chasing bunnys through the trees and found the stump that would lead me right through without using the lamp. About halfway and I felt, through the lead, my old dog stiffen and turn across me to my right, fox, I thoug

Now that is a cross to bust a bush!!! They sound just the ticket John, and look in fantastic nick, wish I was in the market, a credit to you, best of luck with the sale

:clapper: @ Wink Hound Lurcherlad, those dogs look very handy critters, fair play to you. I'd be the last to deny what virtues a Foxhound, Harrier etc could/would bring to a working lurcher BUT lets stick to genuine first cross stuff here and look at the other side. If you bred a litter and you happen on a silent one and you have a few mates who may take a couple more, even if they sing. What of the rest....? Sell 'em on, only to find out their new owner can't stand the noise, let alone the farmer who's land he's sneekin on and to top that, as Winky so eliquently put it, they hit a l

Aye, best of luck with it. Though, as above, I think the main reason as to why this cross has never been popular is simple...... Noise!!! to tell you the truth thats whats holding me back i dont want a opera singer out lamping but i think if they dont carry the noise then they should be handy, good stamina, good feet and strong built too, but i have a few people that will hold a couple each so i hope atleast a couple of them dont sound on the chase Dead right Fenman, stamina, good feet and tough build are all admirable qualitys to have BUT for a lamping (dare I say poaching lurc

Could be just about anything, it's better to know whats in a terrier as far back as you can go but as said before, if it grafts and grafts well and has proven itself over time, then..... Why not! Sealyham blood 'could' be a possiblity but the only ones I know that were workers were (maybe still are?) bred by MR and CR about 20 years since in the NE and they kept them very close. Wheaton is growing ever more popular but if the type goes back a few years it would become less likely, as lads who kept 'em, kept 'em close. Before the White Lakey explosion in the mid 's, Bedlingtons were

Paul Blackledge, not a man to cross back in the day! He kept a decent line of terriers, out of his main dog 'McCoy', (or The Real Mcoy to give it it's full title) There's a fictional book that 'mentions' him a bit, 'The Sett' by Ranolfe Fiennes (spelling). It seems a real shame to read posts like that one SJM from other sites, with a bloke who comes across a decent sort, being 'forced' into competition against people i'm sure he would be at ease with, by an egotistical spouse.

If broken properly, no, broken is the wrong word..... If brought up with ferrets from an early age, only miss handling a 'potential' situation 'could' result in a chopped ferret. When I did keep ferrets all my dogs were sound with them, i'll admit the odd escape too but it never resulted in carnage, usually ending up with a ferret nosing round the dogs bed and the dog banging and clanging about trying to avoid it! My old half cross bull greyhound was the last I had with ferrets. He was bomb proof with 'em but after the last of my ferret line went, I never replaced 'em. About five years

Well done LDR :clapper: -
Can't get the link up but if your taking about the BlueEye, ClearEye and BlackEye Optronics range they were the best on the market 20 years ago, good solid knock about lamps, would agree with Wayneb about the size, weight and switch but back in the day they were great. The weight came from the glass front and that all the front end is the bulb but the beam was good, though the drain was poor. They later added a little version which was ok for bunnys. Don't think they would get anywhere near newer models like Lightforce.

I can see your logic Woz but for me it's still a must, 'wire rash' is a hazard for all lurchers and i've stiched enough from going through, not over. I hate lifting a dog field to field, or worse still walking to find a gate and 'clanging' around trying to find a way to open it. Jumping can be dangerous but if it's a skill put into a young dog alongside good training with excellent recall and you do your homework on the ground you walk, then you will always lessen the odds of injury. When training to jump, get your dog jumping wire obsticals as soon as poss, chicken wire or a bit o

The top one looks like a David James dog, tidy. I do like that broken coated brindle, well balanced, hard working look about it, very nice -

stick to the daytime ones pal, your dog catches em in the day so shouldnt have to put effort in to catch them on the lamp most of the time unless its a long slip. atb J.A Yep, would agree with that. If your dog can run 'em and catch 'em by day then stick to that, it's great running. Most hares that ain't seen a lamp are 'easier' to catch by night, some seem almost pitiful, though on certain ground, like round these parts, their on feckin vallium and can turn a half decent dog inside out. Best of luck

This man is in more dire need of a blow job than anyone on the planet!!

Skill in my book, anytime.... Out and out speed has killed more lurchers than the RSPCA! Nowt better than watching a fast dog but speeds got to be harnessed to be effective especially to see a long working life in a dog. All greyhound composits will posess 'enough' speed, IMO if it were all about speed you'd never need a lurcher, the greyhound would fit the bill just right.

If they ain't been worn much and not moulded to someone elses foot, £30 quid an a bit of oil or Renapur will see 'em right for years of digging. Though it's an 'aquired' foot that'll learn to use Fell Boots, most give up cause they find 'em too awkward...
