  1. Been shot at twice, years ago, sure it wasn't aimed directly at me but when your on your toes and you hear that 'whistle', see twigs shredding and the bang, it's f*****g close enough and I didn't stop to look back! Never had a dog shot at, wouldn't be to happy if I did!!
  2. Yep, riohog, some of the earliest writings of Lurcher production mention the 'legendary' Smithfield collie, the supposed 'ultimate' in Lurcher production but the more I think about it, though I don't doubt Smithfields were the choice of some, by their work they would have passed through many a Shire, where their qualities were well known but just because 'they' were written about and lets face it, Lurchers in print was a pretty rare thing back then, who knows how widespred that cross was? I'll bet that the Smithfield type didn't suit all, just as today, we all have different opinions of what
  3. Pre-ban, for anyone who was out after foxes a great deal, found hares a pain in the arse coming into a call. With the beam hitting it, it would grab a dogs attention and cause a dog to miss seeing the fox creeping up behind it :realmad:. It was a very expierienced dog that would ignore the hare and look beyond to the fox.
  4. Excellent! Put me down for a free copy Bosun...very interesting post that. I know from speaking to the old boys in my family a "lurcher" back in the day was certainly nowt to do with collies. Must have been a parochial thing I guess as certain areas would have their "types." I can't remember what book I was reading, but it was a talking of a fen area lurcher as being a retriever/grey cross. I guess it's the thing with parochial strains being homogenised to the point where you have people telling you that such and such a cross is not a lurcher. If it does the job of a lurcher, it's
  5. Tomo, Chartpolski, you two must be in a state of permanant 'de ja vu' with this one, it'll keep coming up and the doubters will always be there, let 'em doubt .... Leave it boys, leave it....
  6. Just my opinion but as far as your common or garden, supposedly 'traditional' first cross collie greyhound Lurcher goes, through history, they just ain't that common. Until messers Plummer & Hancock seen the niche' in the market (and boy did they market!!) in the early 's, most who championed this cross found it very hard to find a litter of 'genuines'. I would guess thats down to the fact that, those who 'knew' the trials and tribulations of owning and working this type would have found it pretty difficult to locate the 'right type' of collie to produce good sound stock. Living i
  7. If you can do a bit with 'em, it'll make all the difference to both when the season kicks in. Bosun...my season started about two months ago. We are out every day without fail as I live on my permission Aye Stabs, I know how your seasons work down there... Live the dream, your a fortunate man! That line was for those over here
  8. That one at the back looks like its ready for round two! Looks like a good litter Jay, how many you keepin back?
  9. If you can do a bit with 'em, it'll make all the difference to both when the season kicks in. Joe Ox and SJM both have it right too. The key is, to fit a dogs excercise around your daily life, keep it simple to what suits you, that way you'll be able to keep it up and thats far better for your mutt than sporadic bursts when time allows.
  10. You've certainly chose well Dirtwinger and agree MLB, one strong lookin pup for its age, nice long back on him too. Best of luck with him Dirtwinger
  11. I'm with you on that Jay, always looks good That little ball of fire you keep well hidden is a beauty too Though, 'thow shall not covert thy fellow posters dogs' All in all, i'm very happy with my own little lot.
  12. Would agree with you totally Bird, first cross collie's are never a good choice for a first Lurcher, unless the person has sound dog training expierience. Seen plenty ruined through poor training as their owners failed to 'harness' typical collie traits. I always wince when folk put up posts asking others about what they should go for, most ain't got a clue as to what they will be hunting next week never mind next season. My two penneth would be this, for what its worth.... For a first Lurcher go for sommat of medium size 23"- 25", bettering the odds of differing graft. Nowt wr
  13. That, in its most simplest terms, just about sums everything up!..... Good to have you back Wilfred old bean As for dogs and money, yep i'd pay the going rate 'if' I wanted sommat bad enough but to me dogs should be bred for ones self and to be given and given close. Must be really gettin old, I still hark back to the good old days of scouring Exchange & Mart, where a well bred dog would go for 10 to 15 quid and best of all you knew it was gen because at that price, no need for bullshit.
  14. Mine has a small wall around it and it stopped nothing!!
  15. Thats pretty impressive, Tomo your dead right on the 'easy to do' but it's working out dimentions that takes some doing and that one is very well done. I like 'em, always good to see, the fist wer quite primitive but people just keep on improving them Wonder if some of the early ones were only lads spinning foxes in Subarus....??
  16. Good stuff Turk, always great to see old pics, keep 'em coming....
  17. Half to Half x.... Oh Johnbhoy, how little you know....
  18. I've been cleaned out over the past few years too, was recommended a plastic Eagle Owl, about 12 months ago, rather than the Heron and.... So far so good (i know i'm tempting fate by writing this!!) Had all the advice to net over the pond but for me its a garden feature, the fish are secondary, so i'll see how the owl gets on and if the flying fecker makes another raid, it's back to the shop for more cheap fish... My dads old pond was netted and it ruined the whole look for me, though he did have some expensive fish. Oh yer, I have heared that putting a 'pergola' over a pond can deter
  19. Tidy lookin bitch, with a bloody good honest write up, best of luck with the sale
  20. I've posted on this subject before, a few times. I had one, all supposed 'peformance' bred stuff, a pic of it, head only, can be found in my profile pics. Would I recommend one..... Never, about as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike!
  21. 15......(stone) Been huntin beaver most of my life
  22. Made me laugh, true though. What a combo, runs like fek and dont stop or listen. Ugly sod to boot!! :clapper:
