Good advice Blackpack, if your gonna re-seed and it's gonna be used for heavy traffic use a seed type with plenty of Rye.

Only ever seen one pure bred Saluki / Greyhound take enough foxes to be called 'a fox dog', though I suppose, those I know who run this type, would rarely want to use 'em for foxes regular anyway! Seen plenty of 'Saluki Lurchers' that were excellent fox dogs, one was the second best fox dog i've ever had the pleasure of seeing run. Pre-ban, if I was in the market for a fox taking dog, to be honest, a Saluki cross pup wouldn't be what i'd be looking for.

I'm with Romany, in that if your looking for a 'replica', it'd be the best way to go. Though, theroreticaly speaking and i don't wish to cause any offence Mars, as by the sound of it you do rate and value your bitch very highly. I'd ask the question, in three litters, if the dogs you chose have all been quality, similar type workers but produced nothing near to your bitch to merit talk of a possible, line bred, fourth litter, maybe your bitches genes are poor in replicating 'similar type' as herself? You would certainly better your odds by breeding closer then BUT as with all Lurchers, the

Don't have to be a hard run to get a knocked toe, your dog could have done it a number of ways, though most likely it's hit a stone or the like. It's always hard to diagnose without seeing it (not that i'm a vet!) but you can take the swelling down a bit by running it gently under a tap (hose) for about 5mins, lifting the foot you may see some movement in the toe, which may suggest it's only bruised and the treatment for either.... Complete rest till it's right. Best of luck mate

That bitch to your left is all Pie bred, out of Spike to Otter. Plenty of pics in my gallery, all Pie bred dogs and Strong Stuff has a crackin pic of my dog in his 'pre-war days' on his website.

Cracking pics Coco, can you tell us a little more on the type, i've posted a few times on here about older line bred Lurchers and would love to here more? Cheers

more and more joining the sport
Bosun11 replied to huntingalltheway's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Yer, I woul;d agree there is a 'boom' on at the min, thing is, I (and older folks) have seen it before, in the late 's. They'll come and go, few will stick at it, for most it'll be a fad. Damage will be done, it always follows but it'll pass, just weather the storm. BUT what I will say, is for the novices who have joined this forum, or those that YOU know in the 'real world', it's up to those that have been at it a while (us old hands) to ensure we give correct information, offer sound advice, try to both help them be less ignorant and OUR chosen life more secure. -
This is the one Whippet cross I don't get.....! Had the same conversation with most of the lads I know, some of which have owned 'em but everytime the same conclusion came out, you'd be better off with a bull X greyhound.

Whippet x Greyhound!!! A pointless cross???
Bosun11 replied to cooper101's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
A pointless cross??? Christ, I can think of many that WOULD be well described as a pointless cross, that are forever getting dragged out the wood work, from your Akita's to your ABD's but never the whippet X greyhound!! I think whippet x greyhounds are a great cross, so many differing opinions on here, mostley from those who have never owned 'em. I have, and yes, i've moved on from them but only because my style of dogwork changed and I think thats why so many folk have. Grews, from my expierience, are fantastic "up an at 'em" dogs, keen as fecking mustard, with real desire -
My old half cross (bull) bitch was a 'yipper', when she was first started. Not an out an out 'yapper', just little 'yips' but it did have me a little worried back then. But the more she caught, as her confidence grew she stopped and settled down to become the best dog i've owned. Thats her pic on my avatar. I do belive with her, it was a mix of excitement and a little flustration, being young, keen and to be honest, not that fast! I hope that anyone reading this will take it on board when starting a pup, they 'may' start out with a yip but confidence and catches usually sort 'em out.

Tobacco!!!!.......... Fecking hell, this is 2010 for christs sake, there's enough modern stuff out there to do the job, even if the bitch is pregnant, which by the way is best wormed just before, or just after conception. Tobacco, if it does work (as i've never tried it) from what i've read, causes a dog top be nausious and it vomits the worms up, now seeing as tape worms attach themselves to your dogs innards, that would be some fecking wretch to get them up and out, knock a poor dog right off its feet!

Stabba..... Very well said Thing is, most of you boys have commented about how easy hares are on the lamp, well in some parts maybe but there are plenty of places where i've seen good, proven daytime dogs dusted by night time hares. Hares that see a lamp regular, hares that know there ground, hares that can make good, experienced dogs look poor!

a rise in bull terrier numbers
Bosun11 replied to samstorm's topic in Gamefairs, Meet Up's and Events
Jesus ............. So you'll have 20 or so Bull breeds, and their owners standing around in a ring .............. the dogs will have muzzles on ................ most of them will be screaming at each other .............. That will make a nice photo for the Scum newspaper or to go on Panorama. Low profile is the way forward! staffs and english bulls can be shown at krufts why not in the working dog shows. its ridiculas every other breed can be shown just not bulls!!! if not muzzles what do you propose strongstuff?? ideas welcome, how do the aces people manage it?? I d -
a rise in bull terrier numbers
Bosun11 replied to samstorm's topic in Gamefairs, Meet Up's and Events
The Aces show and many other bull terrier only shows are well run, well organised events that promote bull terriers in their own right, run by people who are looking out to promote the best of them breeds. Mixing them with working terrier's and lurchers (many with bull blood), dogs that carry the marks of a legitimate well worked life, will do nothing but harm to both parties. It's sad to say but we have an undesirable element to our chosen vocation and personally, I feel it would be fueled with the re-introduction of bull breeds. -
a rise in bull terrier numbers
Bosun11 replied to samstorm's topic in Gamefairs, Meet Up's and Events
Back in the early 's almost every show you'd go to had a bull classes. Was a good money spinner for the club, as they were always well attended and seen some spectacular dogs there..... Great! Sadley this was not always the case, to many idiots winding there dogs up, some lettin 'em go, carnage around children etc, plus the attraction it aroused with the police, turned into a feckin nightmare! I love bull terriers, enjoy bull terrier shows but as far as i'm concerned, keep them out of working terrier & lurcher shows, enough damage was done in the 's! -
You beat me to it Jay! A dog named Floyd, by far THE best fox dog i've ever seen. Lurcher X Lurcher bred, this dog had it all, in spades full, fast, hard and ultra keen a dog that could catch a fox, he just knew all the moves! This dog was run for about 8 seasons, only on foxes, sometimes up to four times a week, his owner was a numbers man and put the milage in, that was his game and Floyd was as game on his first as his last. His owner keeps a tally of his numbers but if I put it up on here most would think it a piss take and it certainly isn't!!

My opinions are that as we own the islands then we have a right to defend them. Sorry, a little off subject, can anyone remember, not long after the war, that the Falklands had a fox boom due to the fact that no one had been controlling numbers and John Park sent two terriers (a black and a red) to help out in this area. It was in a sporting publication but I can't remember which?

FREE TO GOOD HOME PUPS(or do u get what u pay for?)
Bosun11 replied to Endgame's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I havent bred many litters, the last was over five years since and I can't recall how many years it was before that. My thoughts are these, i'd never breed a litter solely for myself, as much as I wanted a pup out of anything i've owned, friends should also covert a pup from the union as much as me, to ensure it was not only my desire that yet another litter comes into this 'disposable' world. In other words, my dogs would have to be 'that' good that other folk would be asking me to breed from them! Then and only then would pups be given, to those I trust most. If there were surplus, th -
Well first off, pick your spot to do it BUT let's face it, it only serves one part of a dogs conditioning, it'll hardly get 'em 'match' fit, far more has to go into that! As far as i'm concerned and i've done it, the negatives of this type of 'training' far out-weigh the positives for most folk. Plenty of idiots out there who would have no idea if it's doing more harm than good, driving at the wrong speeds for too long etc. Then you'll have the daft buggers (and i've seen 'em) who tie there dogs to the back... Fecking genius!! There are more honest ways of getting your dog fit that

I'll try, in order of me arriving.... 1. A good, well signed venue (pref with a bit of scenery and out of the way). 2. Good parking. 3. Good beer/coffee/tea and well priced food 4. Clearly marked out rings. 5. Good (hunting/dog) trade stands. 6. Honest, genuine working dog judges (if possible a 'name' but not essential). 7. Good ring stewards. 8. Genuine working dog folk who don't think it too macho to show genuine working dogs. Oh for an ideal world...!

Tomo's dead right about the wind, that'll make the difference on 'light' nights. If we waited around for the perfect night every time, we'd hardly get out at all. If you have half a brain you'll adapt your lamping to the type of night.
