A question that should answer itself... How do you tell ? You took a gamble with your collie cur and it paid off but would you go down that road again, at least 12 months of bringing something on to see it not up to the standards you now have. Far better to get a pup off parents that you have seen in the field and admire or purchase from parents that are advertised as such and see 'em before parting with your money, make sure they are what they are advertised as. Dunno if it's just me but I'd never call Park dogs Lakelands, Fell terriers maybe, but Lakies to me are black and tan and working lines came off the likes of Tyson , Cowan or Middleton. I've owned and worked dogs off all the above. The later Tyson dogs were 'gassey' and wrecklass, Middleton dogs, if you got 'em to ground, lasted about a season before jibbing and Cowans dogs were excellent! But.... It's all names from the past, names from the eighty's! Good lines of Lakie are stil out there but are getting diluted and harder to find, my advice would be to seek someone who works dogs of the st

Ear cropping was practiced in the dog fighting world for two reasons, firstly ears can be an easy and painful hold and second, ear bites bleed like feck. It was said that pouring ears would weaken, by bloodloss, the strength in the dog. These days ear cropping is done for asthetic purpose and is a barbaric ritual for any canine to go through, utterly pointless. As for working lurchers (or terriers), ripped and bleeding ears are a fecking pain, especaly when your beloved mutt decides to shake the drips over you, or worse still, your car! Ear rips (or bites) can be stopped quite easily

All of the above is mainly correct, especially Stabs. I owned a EBT as a kid, went everywhere, hunted everything. Rats were it's fun, it loved 'em! Marked as good as anythin, dug like a feind, took pain like it wern't there BUT.... It was a EBT ( a fit one, granted), compare it to a working terrier and it was a none starter! You can read all you want about days gone by and the utimate rat dogs but the truth is, that they have long had their day. I know all abouut trenching them railway banks too Topper, by christ you'd have a sweat on not knowing the outcome, young and foolish eh!! But on this topic... I now have a one eyed dog thanks to Blackthorn! I too thought it was a small bit of shit in his eye, when I looked and tried to fish it out, ended up pulling a Blackthorn out of about an inch and a half, his eye then deflated and he was rushed to the vets, subsiquently he lost the eye and his use as a lamp dog. Moral of the story..... Get your dog to a good vet asap! What you think may be nowt now, might land you in a whole heap of shite later. Your dogs eyes are far to precious to take a gamble on!! -
Aye Roady, they were tough mutts years ago and many did do the job very well indeed, makes you wonder how really! My first Lurcher back in the 70's, though well housed, was never really 'looked after', tipped out onto the street in the morning and out all day in any weather, she would be heard scratching at the front door at bedtime. She was a Whippet/Greyhoundy type. Banished to my spinster great aunts up the street, coz she had a nasty little habit of getting excited then running upstairs to piss on the beds! Fed scraps and little else, a tin of Chappie or the like was fecking luxury

Just what I was saying in my post Poach, different area's produced differing Lurcher types, dependent on what was around. When folk refer to the 'traditional' Lurcher as being herding bred, i'd always beg to differ. Yes, some of the first Lurchers in print were wrote about of this type of ancestry but who knows if that was just the type that belonged to the writers particular area???
