  1. You can lead a horse to water but a pencil must be lead. Stan Laurel
  2. Patience, keenness, dog sense (like a huntsman has fox sense), that ability to learn etc. Though, you can have all of these attributes to be a good dog man BUT as my mate says, and its very true, if your a crap hunter, your dogs ain't gonna see shit..!!
  3. The best dog I've ever seen on foxes, with the biggest tally I know of, had the worst feet i've ever seen on any dog. By the time it retired it didn't have a toe left the wasn't smashed with most of 'em flapping round when it ran.
  4. This was on another thred a few weeks back... I predicted it'd be a massive hit and it will be..!

  11. After years of trying just about every 'new' material jacket on the market, i'm going back to a Barbour waxy. As has been said, they ain't cheap but get the right one, (i'd always go for a heavy weight) and it'll last years, wax it up regular and it'll feel like a putting on an old friend each time out....
  12. There is one now, from the local action group, http://www.h-alt.info/ It's also on the first post. Look on the main tabs under petition.... Remember its our hunting heritage. Please sign it, every signature counts.
  13. they should do a full page or even a double page spread mate, a lot of history both old and new that would be of interest to their readers It will just be preaching to the converted, but at least let people know about the plans. Yes mate, preaching to the converted but the 'yet' uninformed... If there was a petition to stop the plans would you sign it...??
  14. Yesterday I sent a lengthy email to Laoni Gardiner the Features/Sub Editor of The Countryman's Weekly. I hope she 'gets it', I hope she takes action and runs a story.
  15. Golf courses I stay away from ,everyone has big dangers I'd agree with this also.
  16. Oh what a night..!! Yep, pretty much everything GTE said above is right. I attended the church meeting too and listened to the presentation put forward by residents who are local to the area. To be fair, the two blokes who delivered it were well informed and put the case over well and, explained the significant damage to the environment, archeology, nature etc, as well as everything else.... BUT there was someone squirming right though it all, about four pews up from me. Like a schoolboy who ain't enjoying his 'lesson' and would rather it stop being all polite and get to the good bit, he twi
  17. One dark night, the year before last, I came across two American newt surveyors, up to their middles in mud, trying to locate the Great Crested Newt in a local muddy pit (pond). They near shit when I approached, lamp in hand and one eyed mutt to heel. I asked 'em if they had any luck and which pits they had tried and they told me they had tried just about all with no luck. My dog gave 'em a 'daft buggers' look and wanted to continue, so I told 'em where to find these elusive and endangered species... In my neighbors pond and just about every pond in the village, we are choc full of 'em, they
  18. I have just spoken to Dave Harcombe via email and sent him my original post with a few other bits, he has very kindly agreed to use it in next months mag. He has, as many know, a love of historic hunting and as many may not know, a loathing of wind turbines.... Thank you again Dave.
  19. Dead right mate. Now, the proposed farm is on Altcar Estate, which is within West Lancashire Borough Council. Over the river Alt, is Sefton Council, which has just put a lot of money, with the Forestry Commission, into re-building the wetlands, from farm land, for wildlife and migratory birds, directly opposite the proposal site.... Now for those birds flying in could be a danger but there is gonna be some chopped geese etc when those birds get any night disturbance and head north over the estate when that farm is there! Thing is, the electricity produced is destined for West Lanc's not Seft
