  1. That's fair enough, but if you have a dog that's a bit hard, why put it through a lengthy dig just to prove a point, and then have it in sick bay for weeks. Ending up only having been out a couple of times in a season. if it does exactly what you ask/expect it to do then don't worry about this fixation with long digs!
  2. Surely the length of the dig depends on the type of dog that is working the gear. You may have a dog that will stay for hours, and be lifted taking very little stick. But that type of dog that some say is only fit to breed from May come a croppa if the quarry is full on. It's horses for courses, it's the way your dog works, not the length of time under the sod that makes a difference
  3. Trouble is some of the rubbish and fantastical stories that get written on here, with the odd photo thrown to make it look genuine can make some genuine lads think they are gifting pups to men who will work there dogs. I suppose you have to take a chance and hope that some find working homes and not the back yards of the "armchair experts".
  4. He may be the exception, rather than the rule
  5. I was out with the dog this afternoon, and I thought to myself, the working terrier scene is still one of the last country pursuits that looks after its own and Gives you a lifetime of sport even if you don't have a lot of money. If you are a genuine sort, and meet the right people you can be gifted a pup, a mk1 locator and collar can be had for £90, a pair of boots, a waxed jacket, a couple of shovels and you can be out there for £150. If you have a mate with a SG licence you are sorted. All for the cost of half a days pheasant shooting! I wonder if that's why terrier work is viewed as the
  6. I don't think I want to be in your gang marshman
  7. He was in good spirits that morning, gave me plenty of grief for being late! RIP Ron, never forgotten mate....
  8. In law, can anyone shoot the foreshore in the uk? Thanks gents
  9. why let it bother you sir, just accept it will be part of the working terrier scene, and carry on digging and working the dogs the best you can
  10. Not coming from a hunting background, I too was fortunate that a couple of terrier men took a punt, and excepted my invitation. We ended up having a dig that day, to a good old bitch, and the result was one happy farmer. From then on I met some good lads, listened to some sound advice, from people who knew what they were talking about, and the rest they say is history. I shal do the same for someone else one day
  11. With the current public perception of terrier work, the understandable cautiousness of those who work dogs, and the fact that a lot of countrysports groups and associations seem to be detaching themselves from us or viewing us as a poor distasteful relation, I think we should be pro-active. Divided we fall, and it looks like we're on our own hahaha
  12. With some of the rubbish that is being written on this site by either ignorant, selfish or anti people, it has got me to thinking. We can't just get angry, or be abusive and get on with our business, or just hope these problems will go away. Surely the future of the sport rests on our shoulders. Maybe we should be doing more to educate those people who don't know better and to help and encourage those who want to work dogs, showing them the right and legal way to do it? Or am I just living in a simplified dream world, and better to make the most of what we have?
  13. Interesting thankyou gents. My local shoot only uses feeders/hoppers and have had big problems with wandering birds, esp last season. This has to be a major factor, as I think they were only checking/topping up feeders once or maybe twice s week
  14. I think I have posted in the wrong section sorry
  15. Anyone still scatter feed over loose straw? An old boy swore it used to keep the birds from straying too much
  16. There are still some decent gents in the terrier game
  17. I like a smaller terrier, especially for those tight kent earths
