When buying a gun , most haven’t got the luxury of spending “a few weeks at a shoot” deciding which to go for . Most people, myself included, listen to advice , filter out the BS , and then get the gun they like the look of , that fits them and then get on with it . If one was to buy a second hand Browning, Beretta, or Miroku or Perazzi, and down the line you couldn’t get on with it , so what ? It’s not the most “expensive mistake “ of your life . Well they have cut the barley fields today, so no more excuses, not even a full moon . It’s only three fields probably about 30 or 40 acres , but the one field is usually productive . Started off about 8.45/9.0 ish and only saw rabbits and a couple of muntjac in the first two fields . I wish I had a pound for every time a munty gets my pulse racing when I first spot it with the thermal and think it’s a fox only to look closer and see what it really is . Turned up into the best field and with nothing showing I set up the caller with a rabbit distress call . I had par

Well , as if they have a sixth sense. The geese have disappeared. They do it every year , every year I think , if they are still here September 1st I will have the boys over for a bit of a shoot . Looked for them the last couple of days and not a sign . They have probably found some cut field’s somewhere. ???

I used to shoot similar numbers. I used to cover a lot of ground on a quad , with a rest on the front and used the headlights to lamp . I could just keep on going and get whatever number I was after , and take them to the game dealer. Those days are gone , rabbits are the only thing the game dealer asks me for , everything else he thinks he’s doing me a favour taking it off my hands .

The rain has a way of making everything look wretched. When it’s raining the birds are huddled under brambles and bushes and you think where are they all ? Then the sun comes out and the birds appear and everything looks a lot better. I think you’ve done the right thing getting them out of the pen . ?

That’s an awesome bag . We have had myxomatosis and VHD here and the poor old rabbit numbers are way down . I hope you don’t get it up your way . If you do bags like that will be a distant memory.

I hope I didn’t sound as though I was preaching, because that’s not what I wanted to do . It’s just I’ve seen it happen. My old man was Victorian in his approach to parenting, and to be honest it didn’t do me any harm . That little Yilditz is a fantastic carrot to dangle . ? .He will look back on this as a fantastic memory. ?

I’ve got one of my theory’s ... Keep him wanting more , by that I mean don’t give it to him on a plate . My old man took me ferreting or fishing once in a blue moon . If I wanted to go I had to earn it in some way . And it sowed the seed of a lifetime of interest in all things field sports . On the other hand I’ve seen friends who have sons do what you have done and buy them guns and take them with them all the time , then later on they lose interest and found other interests . On the other hand a mate has two sons who he got shooting from a young age , but they had to help him on

Thanks for that Flattop , I’ve got the Darksky app which is similar and the met office one. But to be honest last year the rain pissed me off so much I didn’t even bother look at the forecast because I’ve got to go out and feed and check the birds no matter what the weather is doing . I just wear a coat and leggings anyway , if it’s raining, oh well , if not great. I’ve given up moaning about the weather ( well almost) . We’re British, it’s what we do , we’re not made of sugar .?

It’s been raining hard here for a while , the ground has got really wet . Thankfully I’ve just got my brand new Kawasaki mule on a 20 plate . The shoot can’t be doing too bad , despite the gaffer pleading poverty all the time and then going and getting a brand new Mercedes sports car .? Anyway just like you Si I have been doing a bit of loading . I’ve settled on 42grains of N140 with my 70grain Sierra Blitzkings . They are shooting unbelievably good groups at 200 meters . I haven’t tried them at 300 yet , but I’m happy so far . And to be honest I’m way over the recommended at 42gr .

I went to a simulated day with a mate who hadn’t done much shooting . First drive he burnt is finger on the barrels and got a big blister . The second drive was in the grouse butts and the clays were coming at you , a shard of clay hit him on his bald head and blood started pouring out . By the last drive his shoulder was black and blue and he couldn’t mount the gun . He said“ f@ck this for a game of soldiers “, I don’t think he’s shot since .??
