  1. Most of the foxes near me are very similar in size , “peas in a pod” you could say . The foxes near the chicken farm sometimes appear and feel heavy/ well fed . I think +20lb foxes are quite rare . 23.5 lb is a beast .
  2. I shot my personal best fox a few years ago . I was convinced it was huge and some sort of record. It weighed in at just over 20lb . I feel like the small guy in the shower compared to you lot , with all that measuring , I’m going to grab my towel , see ya ?
  3. I really enjoyed the write up Stavross. It sounds like a fantastic days sport . I’m glad some of your hard work has paid off . ?
  4. I am watching the news now . I wouldn’t be surprised if we go into another lockdown. I’m hoping we can carry on shooting, but for now we will have a good day tomorrow and maybe a half decent Xmas . All the noises I’m hearing are not good . The game dealer has told me that he won’t be paying for birds now . His plant in Belgium has gone into lockdown. I have a full diary of dates for January cramming in days that were missed from the last lockdown. Who knows if any of them will go ahead ?
  5. I sometimes do some plastering work , I do some subbing for a gang of lads if they a short handed . We had been renovating a house in Stroud . Anyway I got a call from a one of the lads to say don’t come to the renovation in the morning , instead go to this address, some builders want this water damaged kitchen ceiling over skimmed . So I turned up and was shown the ceiling, a nice easy little morning, it was only a small area . I got chatting to the builder and he informed me the house belonged to Ian Ogilvy , a long forgotten actor who played the Saint , I vaguely remembered hi
  6. You are right Philpot . I know the masters from my local pack spend a lot of time on trying to foster good relations with farmers landowners and keepers . They spend half their time grovelling and the other half apologising, it’s a thankless job , but my experience is that they are working on their image and public relations. It might be too little to late for a lot of people though .
  7. I enjoyed that mate . Future YouTube star ??
  8. I’ve never tried the intestines, but they empty themselves as the get up and fly . I’ve known some that have eaten them like that and it’s supposed to be like a pate .? I will eat most things but draw the line at that .
  9. It’s a 900 acre block of woodland and gets shot once a year . It will probably be the only woodcock we shoot all year . We have a resident population of woodcock estimated at 50-60 thousand and a visiting population of 1.5 million and a world population estimated at about 15 million . They are not endangered . I am interested to know why so many feel they don’t want to shoot them or show restraint, you will never be in a position to shoot hundreds , why not enjoy a good day at a real sporting , totally wild bird, that also tastes great by the way .
  10. That’s not my experience. All the birds we shoot and that are shot on estates local to me are processed by game dealers. A lot of them are exported to the continent. Any that are too badly damaged have the good meat taken off and put into game meat blocks which get exported to the French and Belgians and turned into Pates and terrines. Early season shooting sometimes in warm weather , birds which do not get chilled quickly enough go green in the guts and get rejected, these may well end up in a pit , also birds which are just breasted out or Supreamed have their carcasses dump
  11. The smell to which you refer will be gone after Christmas........ when I get my “Lynx Africa “ shower gel and deodorant gift box in my stocking .?
  12. Do you know it sausage? I have tried all sorts on woodcock, i now use 28grams of 7.5 through 1/2 and 1/2 chokes . My logic is for walked up the birds are very often flying away from you or quartering or crossing but sometimes at a fair distance. They are only a small bird and don’t need 32 grams of 5s which some guys shoot . I can honestly say I didn’t once feel like I needed a heavier load , the kills were clean and at good ranges . I am a firm believer that it’s all in the pattern.
  13. Had a good day on the woodcock, I’ve done a little write up in the rough shooting section for anyone that is interested.?
  14. That time of year again . My now annual pilgrimage to Cheshire for some fantastic woodcock shooting , great dog work , great company and this year a feast of toothsome treats supplied by my very good friend Steve who invites myself and fellow keeper Anthony for this special days sport . We traveled north from Gloucestershire on Sunday evening and stayed at a premier inn so that there was no rushing about and could have a chilled out breakfast and easy drive to the meet . Bloody hell !!! We were the only guests at the inn , the only ones having breakfast . This Covid is crippling th
  15. We had better hope hunting continues in one way or another. It’s the thin end of the wedge , if it goes , shooting is next . I don’t think parliament has the time or inclination to listen to any hunting related bills at the moment. It looks like it’s “ death by a thousand cuts”. A mates son was keepering at Ramsbury recently , so there is a shoot there . The hunts sometimes don’t help themselves when they go places they are asked not to . From a keepering perspective, while I enjoy a days hunting I’m always glad when they have gone because they do disturb the place . S
  16. I’ve just got in from feeding because I’m not going to feed in the morning...... I’m of to sunny Cheshire for my annual woodcock shoot . Travelling north this evening and staying in a Travel lodge , hopefully a leisurely full English in the morning then a short drive to the shoot . I will do a write up for anyone who is interested in the Driven , walked up and rough shooting section. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a witnessed right and left . ???? I think I’d like to be in the woodcock club . All those stuffy old farts need a bit of SL behaving badly at the annual dinner . ??
  17. “Red sky in the morning , shepherds warning “.
  18. Not been on here for a few days as I’ve been busy. We’ve shot last Saturday, Tuesday and Yesterday. And got the bags we wanted, but at a price. I had to go into drives I usually don’t go into at this stage of the season, but hey ho , you can only shoot them once . Hope everyone is getting some sport . Just been reading FDs experience and it reminded me of a fox that I’d been after . It was spotted sitting on top of a muck heap regularly , but was a long way off and when I tried to close the distance it would slip over the back of the heap and disappear. On this occasion I closed the
  19. It’s not just me that finds farmers incapable of following even the most simple of instructions or requests . I honestly think that if they didn’t inherit their farms that most would have ended up on skid row .
  20. I’ve had some good results with snares on my local chicken farm . I even managed to catch the farmers Collie . I did tell him to keep it away from that area . ??? Don’t worry it was fine , I use relax-a-lock eyes on my snares .
  21. I don’t know what the ground is like near your pond , but the best way to get your duck flying in future is to feed them away from the pond , a strip of Maize 100 meters or so away and position the guns between the pond and Maize. Also gets the duck really fit walking to and from the feed . Just feeding the pond is ok but I’ve found feeding them away is better . Don’t want to teach you how to suck eggs FH , just a bit of food for thought. Sounds like you had a good day anyway.?
  22. Haven’t you tried jamming their legs in your wellies. What am I talking about...... of course you have .?
