    Started to watch “ Hard kill” . I was only half watching it , but soon realised after the first couple of minutes that it was bad , but it got progressively worse until after 20 minutes I pulled the plug . It wasn’t just bad it was truly awful .

    I’m envious of the snow , looks very festive. We’ve got floods here in Gloucestershire. Roads closed and a house in the village flooded out . Not very nice just before Christmas. The road into the village was flooded , and I went to feed this morning and there was a car in the middle of the flood water up to the engine. Why do some people look at a large area of water in the road and think , “ I’m driving a James Bond car , I can sail across that “ ?

    The butlins place you mentioned was Pontins at Camber sands ..... how do I know ? I have been there , grim . I always remember Wilfred Brambles scene in the sink . Especially the box of OMO . As a bit of interest , when young , if you were knocking off a married woman , she would leave a box of OMO in the window , it stood for “ old man out “ .

    In the days before the tinterweb , we bought vinyl singles , and there was a magazine called smash hits for teenagers interested in pop music . Intellectual students bought melody maker or NME , But for your average kid it was smash hits , I didn’t ever buy it , I nicked the picture off a mates sister .

    I was just watching YouTube and some old music videos . Heart of glass by Blondie came on and it took me back to 1978 and a 13 year old lad with lots of hormones. I can remember seeing it on top of the pops and thinking, Christ , I’d like a bird like that !!! I thought the music was ok but , I got hold of a poster from smash hits and Debbie was on my wall for years . Years later I met my wife , also blonde and also slim and also called Debbie , I think I was subconsciously, waiting for Blondie to turn up . Anyway , who was your smash hits poster girl ?

    We always have a Boxing Day shoot . 10.00 am meet in the fisherman’s car park. It’s a boundary day/morning. The only difference this year is the bun fight / meal afterwards , that is usually a venison stew with a French stick and wine is not going to happen. But the shooting will , and it will be followed by a socially distanced flask of tea after . I absolutely love this day , all the youngsters are out with new boots and coats or guns . Their enthusiasm is infectious , and I get a real kick out of seeing the next generation turn a pheasant inside out , or “ pillow case” one , and then carry

    Why did you ask about a .223 in the deer stalking section, are you in Scotland? I know it’s capable of dropping stuff , but there are better calibres for deer . Like for example the 6.5 you have .

    Tikka T3 in .223 for night time fox and Tikka T3 varmint stainless in .243 for daytime fox and deer . You can spend a lot more on rifles but for a good no nonsense functional tool , I don’t think you will go wrong . I followed advice when deciding which calibre for foxing, and at the time everyone was using .222 or .223 . I still think these calibres are excellent , but having read about users of the .204 ruger and knowing a couple of keepers who use Tac 20s and practical 20s . I think I would have gone down the wildcat path .

    I know how Noah felt now . I’m seriously thinking about constructing an ark . There has been little let up in the rain here for a while , and the ground is saturated. On Saturday I had to forego shooting a drive that I’d planned because it would be near impossible to get the guns on their pegs . Fields where you would see pheasants, now have ducks and geese , and even a couple of herons. Spinning in the morning is a nightmare, just trying to find a bit of ground that isn’t waterlogged to lay the wheat on is difficult.     I love duck flighting . The anticipation, the disappointment, and then sometimes as it did for you and the youngster it goes well . I think you might just of ignited a lifelong interest in shooting there . Well done to you both . And even more importantly ........ they are delicious ?

    My guess is that it is largely down to genetics and diet . There are like people foxes that no matter how much good quality protein they ingest will never be giants . But get foxes that have a “ large fox” gene . And feed it a diet of lambs or chicken or piglets and you get these brutes . I just googled the largest fox in the uk and it was 38lb , prior to that 26.5lb . If we are playing the carp fisherman game , what weight qualifies as a specimen?
