  1. My perfect under 20" lurcher would be produced by mating my 17 1/2" pure kelpie to a good working whippet...but unfortunately I can't as I've had her spayed.
  2. Apologies in advance as I've posted similar answers before: I work three pure kelpies as ferreting and bushing dogs and I catch more with them than I did with previous lurchers as the ground I work is small fields bordered by thick hedges and dense woodland. But then again, maybe my lurchers were just crap! Good luck with it, I'm sure it'll be fine.
  3. I've always found dogs respond easily to several nicknames. When I first bought my oldest kelpie bitch, I originally called her Tilly. I thought her recall training seemed to be going fine until a few weeks after getting her she started completely ignoring me. I then realised it was because my girlfriend Ella(now my wife who wasn't used to training dogs) had "un-trained" her recall by constantly using her name for no particular reason. This left her thinking that Tilly didn't mean "come here" but meant anything from "get off the sofa" to "where's Rusty?" I got round it by changing her
  4. I've had two different types of Muck Boots and found them great apart from the poor grip. My lovely wife bought me a pair of Grubb's Stalkers for my birthday which are very similar but with a vibram sole and I find these even better.
  5. There was a great programme on BBC2 last night called Wild Wales which was all about the natural history of South Wales. I think it was the first in a series with each episode focusing on different regions.
  6. I always hope to start back in September but due to the undergrowth around here and the rock hard soil and late breeding it usually ends up as the back end of October.
  7. All three of my kelpies have taken ages to settle into their final shape as well as their final character. Rust was very slim and svelte (I think that's the word I'm after) until he was a couple of years old or so. He's now fairly chunky for a kelpie with a thick husky-like coat. He's the handsome chap in my avatar.
  8. Your dog's not ugly stroller...it's an absolute beauty. Apart from the ears and colour it looks very similar to my youngest pure kelpie. If I hadn't met both the parents on the farm I'd have sworn there was a dash of whippet in her.
  9. Not all teachers are the same. I've been teaching for thirteen years now, mostly in inner city schools, and I always tell the kids I teach, ranging from 3 to 11 year olds, about my ferreting trips etc. I've also taken one of my ferrets and a kelpie into school to do a pre-visit talk before we took them to a country show. Whenever I teach food chains and food webs I make sure I include the lamb - fox link and when we do the ubiquitous fox hunting topic in year 6 they get the true facts to balance their tv based arguements. Also, my son is only just over 22 months old but he already
  10. As Bradford Lad, my only experience was by accident when I lost one of two hobs several years ago. The remaining hob was fine for a few weeks but gradually became more and more grouchy over the winter. I bought in a new hob and jill after a few months and although they had to be kept apart at first, after gradual introduction they all ended up getting on fine. Crikey: that's made me realise that my only two ferrets are over six years old. I'll have to get a couple of new ones for this coming season.
  11. Why did the chicken cross the line? It didn't...according to FIFA!
  12. I'd always assumed that "the whippet shivers" was due to pent-up excitement. My youngest bitch is 100% kelpie and 0% whippet, yet she shivers in exactly the same way. She does it on three main occasions: 1)when she's just gone through the side gate, waiting for me to put her collar and lead on, 2) when we reach the wood and she's waiting for me to let her off the lead and 3) if we meet anybody on the way to the wood and stop for a chat. It's like she's saying, "Come on: get a move on!"

    Sheepdogs

I know of a racing whippet breeder who trained one of her whippets to do a half hearted attempt at rounding up the sheep. Apparently it worked by her calling out the names of other people in the field or objects (tree, gate etc) and it would move towards them rather than using traditional "come bye" etc.
  14. I've also noticed a much higher number of dead bees around this year than usual. I've also heard that, due to the amount of pollinating they do, if every bee disappeared overnight we'd be in huge trouble.
  15. There's a real knack to getting a sound from a shepherds' whistle; believe me, I've tried. I tend to simply stick to my own natural whistle for dog training as that way I'll never forget it and leave it at home.

    ALL ROUND JACKET

I've been umming and arring about a decent jacket for a few years now and my research, on here and other places brought me to a shortlist of Swazi, Kammo and Paramo. I'm going up to Appleby in a couple of weeks and I'm intending to get a Paramo jacket while I'm there so will keep you updated as to how it performs. The main problem I find, with me being a bit of a hairy hobbit, is perspiration as much as rain.
  17. Apologies in advance if this is a tad off topic but...we occasionally hear about 3/4 collie 1/4 greyhounds and collie x whippets but has anybody heard of a collie x whippet with more base blood than whippet and if so, what was it like. The reason I ask is simply because I've always liked pastoral saturated dogs (not the right phrase but you know what I mean) but I prefer whippet to greyhound crosses.
  18. As it's dark brown, could it be a Maran bantam?
  19. Not me, though I've got a triple version of the one on the left. Can't for the life of me work out how it works though.
  20. There's no such thing as litter wastage; just a dog which will excell in other areas compared to the rest of the litter.
  21. Thanks Bosun. I'm on holiday in Appleby in late May/early June so will try to get one then.
  22. Thanks Paul. I'd already mentioned it to my neighbour as it's a semi and their loft has been converted.
  23. Do you know anybody with either a pajaro or halcon jacket as I'm considering splashing out on one of these with the money I got for my birthday...I wouldn't normally be able to afford one.
  24. I've got a great book called "Dingos don't bark" about one man's attempt to keep a dingo as a pet. I've also read about somebody in the UK (many years ago) who had a dingo which he used for ferreting, though I'm not sure how much truth there was in it. My cream kelpie bitch looks very similar to a dingo, and she's just about as friendly too. Undoubtedly the most one-man-dog I've ever known.
