I'm going with my wife and son, probably on the Monday.

Timberbuild kennels do a kennel/run floor which is apparently ideal if you need to site your kennel and run on an area which doesn't have a concrete base or if you find (like me and others on this thread) that it stinks in the summer unless you house out after every single wee. Don't know the price though.

My best ferreting dog (or the best dog that I take ferreting ) is a 17" pure kelpie bitch. Very determined, great attention span, never had an injury(only one visit to the vet for her initial jabs), faultless nose and invariably makes the right choice; which occasionaly means having to ignore her stupid owner. On the negative side: she's not fast enough for rabbits in the open, but that doesn't bother me too much as there's not a lot of "open" around here, and she makes a hell of a noise when she's outpaced.

Do you think that's why she got an annual family pass for the local "city farm?" You've got to admit: it's hard to beat a good Jacob.

Don't worry; I thought those sheep were stunning too! My wife actually bought me a book called "Beautiful Sheep" for Christmas a couple of years ago. I can't believe I've just admitted to that.

working dogs after bad injuries ?
Neal replied to staffs riffraff's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
My eldest kelpie was chased into the road by another dog when he was around nine months old and subsequently hit by a van. Fortunately, due to the high wheel base, it simply hit him and went straight over the top. He had a fractured pelvis and needed crate rest for a few weeks while it mended. He's gone on to be my best ever working dog as he has the knack of being in the right place at the right time. (Maybe due to his lack of speed ). A couple of years ago I had to take him to the vet as he was barely able to walk (he was just coming up for ten years old at the time) and it turned out t -
My three kelpies sat calmly at my feet this morning while I watched two bucks browsing less than forty yards away on the other side of the stream in my local wood. However, I must admit, the eleven year old was shivering with excitement hoping I'd say, "Go on then!"

Kanigra, I think it may simply have been that mine took after the kelpie more whereas yours took after the collie more. Although mine was biddable I definitely got the impression he was always thinking of ways to ensure he did what he wanted. Now that I've had kelpies for a while I've realised it's just a lot easier to work with them instead of trying to instill blind obedience: mine have a habit of always being right and proving me wrong. I've lost count of the number of times I've told my youngest bitch that there's definitely not under any circumstances a rat in a particular place only

I only have pure kelpies now but my first kelpie blooded dog was bred by Dave Sleight from his first litter of kelpie/collie x greyhounds and it definitely WASN'T rubbish!

I changed a dog's name once and I actually found it easier to go for a completely different name and simply treat it as a new instruction. My current eldest kelpie bitch has the registered name of Susie and we named her Tilly as a pup. However, when she was allowed out into the big wide world she completely ignored any attempt at recall. I realised that she was the first pup I'd had since my first ever lurcher that I'd had recall problems with...the common denominator was that they were the only two dogs I'd reared when not single ie I had a girlfriend who used the word Tilly for all and s

Kelpies? Don't listen to Tomo and Jigsaw; kelpies are rubbish!

I'm not certain but I've always felt that Adam Henson was pro-fieldsports/pest control; just based on some of his previous comments about the badgers on his farm.
-
Jigsaw, I've checked and the litter I was aware of is the same one.

I've been feeding raw for about twelve years or so and have not had any problems in all that time: touch wood! However, before feeding raw I once gave a cooked bone, the kind you get in pet shops, to a lurcher and noticed a few minutes later he was pawing at the side of his muzzle. I had a closer look and discovered that the bone had snapped in half and the remaining half, which was a kind of tunnel shape, was the perfect fit for his top jaw. As a result the bone was wedged firmly in place and the only way to get it out was by using a screwdriver as there was just enough space between hi

In some respects things have almost gone full circle: years ago someone would say, "I fancy a collie x greyhound x whippet x deerhound x bedlington because it will have the collie brains, the whippet agility etc." However, people found out that it often didn't work out the way they'd hoped and now people criticise a certain breed, cross-breed or type because of theories about what it will be deficient at eg saluki crosses are thick, deerhound crosses aren't agile, whippet crosses are too slow, collie crosses are too easily upset etc. In reality, although theory can help to a certain ex

One of my favourite programmes used to be Country Ways on Meridian (not sure if they had other "local" versions of it in different areas). However, I've not seen it for a few years; maybe Countrywise is the newly re-branded nationwide version of it. In the last series (of Country Ways) there was an episode from near Slimbridge which featured a gamekeeper with the usual gundogs as well as a bull x greyhound (or at least it looked like one).

Wasn't it Mark Twain who described golf as a waste of a good walk?

Hi Jigsaw, I know of a litter of working kelpies available in Eire at the moment too though I'm not sure which area.

She's stunning! I often tell people my kelpies' great grandsire's must have been saucepans as their coats are like teflon. Even then, they still don't shine quite like Maggie's; she really is a credit to you. Every time I see pictures of her and Dave Sleight's Gem I get tempted to go back to "the darkside."

B*ll*cks! I've just spent ages wording a lengthy reply and then the internet went down and I lost the reply so will now try an abbreviated version. Apologies in advance if I repeat myself but I've posted similar responses to similar threads on here before. My second bitch was a collie x whippet bred by racing whippet breeder, Liz Tinsley, out of a 3/4 whippet 1/4 greyhound called Mermaid and sired by one of David Hancock's collies. The collie was called Tory and was 3/4 border collie 1/4 bearded collie. Many people don't like the sound of this cross as both breeds are sometimes critici

Does anybody have experience of covering via the NFU? I just thought that perhaps they'd be more working dog friendly.

Chichester ferret rescue: 07039535652. I had two hobs several years ago from him and two jills recently. Really nice bloke and definitely working ferret friendly; when I got my most recent jill a month ago he had a lot of nets going cheap too as well as rabbit and mole traps.
-
Slightly off topic but: I just rehomed a jill from Chichester ferret rescue this weekend and he also had several hemp and nylon nets for £2 each as well as some live catch rabbit traps and mole traps. Told him I'd pass it on.

Offered a dog - curious as to its breeding
Neal replied to bobslurchers's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I once owned a lurcher which was (I hope I get this right) a blue brindle merle with a fawn cast. He looked like an ordinary brindle with the exception that some of the stripes were broken and looked like spots. Sounds similar. -
My brother has two whippet bitches and the youngest was bred by Nigel Wallbank. He's over the moon with the bitch for general daytime mooching and he said Nigel's a decent bloke; easy to talk to.
