  1. I got one of them cheep plasma cutters off ebay a few years back and worth every penny and more! Watch it when you sink it into a gas bottle though, washed the one in the pic out with hot soapy water and let it soak, hosed it out and it still went with a thump when i made the first cut.
  2. My shed stove is "multi fuel" burns anything from waste oil to old hoovers A bucket full of sawdust and mix in a couple of ltrs of waste oil burns for hours and gives a good constant heat.
  3. Never made a stick with it but it is a nice wood to turn on a lathe, very hard and a fine grain, would think it would make a durable stick.
  4. Bed looks the nuts bud I like the pull out bed ..very tidy Cheers. I made one for my son and one for my daughter. The pull out is on wheels so rolls nice and smooth on the floor, good if they have friends to stay.
  5. Cracking job! I hope that is either for yourself or you were getting paid by the hour for making it as there is a lot of HRS gone into that piece.
  6. Hats off to you. I have done a couple of beds with laminated curves on the heds so know the time that goes into gluing up the curves. That's a phenomenal piece you have done there.
  7. As kanny says doesn't look like oak pitch pine maybe? If you find the right buyer ( or someone with a giant fish tank ) it may be worth some something.
  8. Dude that is a serious amount of bending! Is that oak all steamed or laminated? Nice job!
  9. Nice Job Best way to learn -buy a welder and play about with it. I started welding the same way.
  10. Yes he is has a good range of skills beyond his years. He has lived in the shed with me since he could walk and i have always made sure the kids had there own space/ bench etc and supervision if they wanted to tackle a project. It has finally payed off and he is managing projects on his own now without me looking over his shoulder every step of the way. This knife is 100% his own with no input from me.
  11. As others have said if you want to be sure what you are dealing with buy 01 or 52100 steel. For me scrap carbon steel- leaf spring, saw blades, old files are a bit random but can generally make a pretty good blade if tempered right and has the benefit of being free. My lad just made this one from land rover leaf spring. Heated 3x anti magnetic quenched in cooking oil and then bronze tempered at the cutting edge and blue at the spine. Takes a razor edge and holds it well. http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/topic/337559-one-for-the-kids/page-7 Materials all recycled so only costs were
  12. Not seriously but i did experimented with layers of fabric material/ plastic milk bottle layered alternatively and G-clamped between chunks of angle iron and heated with the gas torch final article was super tough and looked pretty good, not used it for anything useful yet but it could have many applications.
  13. Joiner/builder to trade but knackered my back so now estimating and contract management for a local builder. Making stuff is my hobby to keep me sane, pen pushing isn't my idea of fun but it pays the bills.
  14. Not generally but If i got offered enough money i might
  15. Top job with the boxes, good to see someone else making useful stuff with off-cuts. Nice thread, good banter!
  16. downland engineering purpose made belt grinder ,but its the hand finish that does the trick Did a quick google...nice! http://downlandengineeringservices.com/belt_grinders/ i see they do the components as well. Thinking to build one myself, have a 2hp 3phase motor and the inverter drives have come down in price to under £100 so thinking to go for one of them rather than step pulleys, will give infinite speed variation. Will likely buy the rollers too to save time, but weld up the frame from stock box and put it all together.
  17. Nice clean made knives. What grinder do you use?
  18. What length do you need? I don't do hedging but plant a lot of trees and need stakes for them. If you have access to a table saw or big band-saw, i cut 3" treated fence post into quarters , giving four 1 1/2" treated posts 5' long, it is pretty cost effective.
  19. Nice one Jok, good to see others making stuff and posting here. Re the sheaf -offer appreciated but no immediate requirement for it myself so by all means if anyone else can offer it a good home then go for it. Griff
  20. Thanks Jok. Post up some pics of your handiwork. Yes Mrs G's leather handbags and long boots have both been sacrificed for the good cause of sheaving knives
