GruffaloGriff replied to spsurfer's topic in Countryside Skills, Craft & DIY
Nice! 61hrc That will keep an edge! I made one from HSS tool steel wrapped in stainless and the HRC is thereabouts. http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/topic/338941-experimental-blade-carbonstainless-blade/page-3 -

Cracking job, good design, lines flow well, nice on the eye. -
Aye when you are young and foolish you think you can do/ lift anything, thing you don't realize is you wear out same as anything else that is pushed to the limit, hindsight is a great thing.

It,s one of the things that wrecked my back.

Nice Job. Good idea using re-bar for profiles.

Wrong time of year for raking hay but i cut my wild flower meadow late last year (December ) and it has be too wet to rake the grass off until now that is, had a couple of dry days and a nice breeze but no rake, not a decent size one anyway, so set to and rattled this together in a couple hours. Nothing fancy just what bits of wood were to hand and straight off the machines, no sanding, just needed to be functional not a museum piece. Did get a coat of danish oil just to protect it but it was still wet when i used it. Bored out 1/2" holes 2" apart, tape on bit as rough depth guage. -
He has it heat treated and polished, now working on the handle.

I use a Scotchbrite lap mop in a bench grinder/polisher for a satin finish, fast & effective. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Scotchbrite-4-x4-lap-mop-Very-Fine-A-Grade/321462002736?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D35309%26meid%3Daf3c6756173242c2bd9e62dda7cf4549%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D4%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D321814041924

sand longways with grain then wet and dry Ok thanks, guess patience is the key, always looking for shortcuts My boy is at that stage with his blade just now, been rubbing for about a day now and still hasn't got the marks out of the bevel.
-
That horn goes nice with the steel. Nice polish on the blade any tips for getting all the belt sander marks out?
-
Taking shape.
-
Thanks lads, yeh he does me proud. Griff
-
My boy started this blade yesterday, old favorite, land-rover leaf spring.
-
Don't have the patience to do it all by hand myself, too much to do and never enough time! My ratio is 95% power tool 5% by hand hence thinking of making a long belt grinder for serious fast removal with minimal effort. Nothing wrong with Park Tools, i take a stroll down that isle at lidl every week.
-
Looking forward to seeing the finished article. What grinder do you have? Thinking of buying or making a belt grinder myself not decided yet.

Bit of copper pipe?

Experimental Blade Carbon/stainless Blade.

Thanks francie, will get round to those other blanks eventually and post them up when i do. -
Nice looking design.

Came home after work on Wednesday and my boy had dismantled an old microwave, pulled the transformer out and made an electromagnet. Basically Welded the steel layered core up the corners ant cut out the coil with the fine winding leaving the coil with the heavy winding, attach to a battery and you have a powerful electromagnet. This one lifts a 14lb fencing mal effortlessly with an 18v drill battery. Not sure what use it is but a bit of fun all the same!

Thanks NorthernRock good to hear others enjoying it. Not made anything new in the last couple of weeks just just been buying broken Makita & Bosch power tools fixing and selling on. Fine for a spell and a bit of quick cash but i get fed up of the inside of power tools after a while and will be back on to making something again before long. Still got a blank from the experiment stainless steel blade thread may give that a go soon. http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/topic/338941-experimental-blade-carbonstainless-blade/ -

Whats the story with that knife Gruffalo? Is it fairly old? Yes it's old, don't know much about it other than my grandfather gave it to me, was possibly my Great Grandfathers. I have several of his hunting knives.
