6 mile walk with the pup coming up 6 month
terryd replied to JezzaMaze's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Simple fact is they work and you can get timing bang on and not have to touch the dog. The alternative being legging it across a field after a dog whos legging after a sheep and then when the dog gets the sheep and you get the dog its just a complete bloody shambles and no good is going to come of it. You actually need the dog to grab the sheep because if you have gone horse shouting and the ducker is blanking you any way how else you going to catch a lurcher doing good knows how many mph across a field Ideally you avoid any of that happening but some dogs are a bit more lively than others. -
Sounds a nightmare my understanding unless you have a clue using your ears you need to dig along the length of line. Just sounds horrendous

I am happy with my lot 1 hard earned rabbit worth 20 easy ones in my book. Quality not quantity espeacially day time keeps me going

I think the lack of bunnies is why now a lurcher needs to be more versatile than ever before. Depending on your poison a it of gun work, catty and just a pal to mooch about with. The days of a hopping over a gate for a quick flash or maybe a bit lamping ? are going quick. Every where is so built up hardly room to swing a cat let alone blast a million candle power

I think it is a phase mine went through the same but after about 9 years he came out the other side ? He has even accepted the pup which absolutely amazed me and I was dreading it. When I think back to his younger years he really did try and rule the roost and got to admit it was touch and go at times ?

What a lovely little dog

You have got me thinking now about my old beddy whippet. When she started she would would hum and hah about the place really gingerly and eventually when she started to catch she would all most hold the rabbits by the skin. I actually started to think she had some thing wrong with her mouth. But as time went on her confidence grew and turned into awesome little dog though she all ways held rabbits a light as possible which is no bad thing. You imagine a nice green young rabbit on the lamp this time of year. Bit of long grass clumped about or a thick hedge. Once off course if you were to l

I have noticed the same and when you see a rabbit some where that you haven't seen one for 4 or 5 years it is a great day.

Yes I have a vacced Hob must be worth a fortune lol. Cost me about 70 quid 5 years ago. I dread to think how much now a days

Prior to that Tomo how did you handle her seasons ? Only reason I ask if my oldest jill was spayed.

What works well if you dont want any thing two flash is a length of sheep wire and a couple of poles. Just thread the local foliage through the meshes and you can all ways have a second bit behind you if needed. When your done just roll up and stick out the way until your there next time. Cheap as all ways loads laying about and just redo each year. Me and my mate shoot a marshy field for ducks and we can pop that smack back in the middle with a it behind hide us and flesh it out with reeds and its pretty much invisible

Any pics .....Small lurchers past and present

Old Kizzy lovely thing. I used to lamp with a couple lads from the valleys who would come down west for a night out. I was like the local guide back then and new all the spots lol. She used to hold her own against there muscle bound jobs no problems and did her thing up against the hedges or just plucked them out at the last moment. She really cleaned up in the heather on the old range Even in the big fields just use a bit of cunning and slip when the rabbit came flying for home and was only few yards out instead of wasting all that effort on long slips -
Just you the dog a lamp and good old rough night Good luck hope it works out which I am sure it will

As far as knife sharpeners go this is the best I have used. Find it excellent and idiot proof https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B009YKHZ96/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1

Some age that I think the best I have done is 8 or 9. Out of interest how did you bring her out of season each year jab or hob or did you not ?
-
on the lamp and easy rabbits and gee her up if you leg it after the rabbit your self just to fire her up. You can't train a dog to strike as such that will boil down to enthusiasm at the end of the day. If you had a ferret and let her pin a netted rabbit etc but failing that lamp is the best way and be really selective with your runs. Get between the rabbit and base camp so she sees it coming and go for it. Worry about finesse once your up and running. Just my thoughts

They look stunning the old bull crosses with a good shine sure do take a lovely picture. Hope you have a great season. Regarding smaller types I deliberately aimed for a smaller dog this time around at about hopefully 22 inch. Just no need for any thing bigger for what I want and may fly under the radar better.

Super well done can't fault that. Great start
