Agility and therefore strike, definitely. Gameness that’s a whole topic in itself! There are game dogs and there are liabilities. If you are out every single week rabbiting on masses of permissions, as we used to be, you see how ‘game’ but intelligent dogs learn from their knocks and bumps, start to adjust and run accordingly. That’s a strength not a weakness.

As has been said a million times by others it was a bit of a lottery with the Hancocks given they absolutely were not ‘a line’ and bred from various different dogs at differing percentages. BUT, I’ve seen some crackers; a lad I know, not that long ago, had a rough coated 3/4 bred beardie-border that was almost competition standard obedience trained, a fantastic proven all-round worker and just a just a lovely dog to own and a great companion. He always said he’d have another like her in a heartbeat but by then the Hancocks had pretty much stopped breeding. He bought in and had bred on

Looks good

If he did, he’s obviously got one eye on the local elections in May as Labour will probably need every vote they can get to avoid a wipe-out.

I agree

That is funny!

I thought about getting one of the half crosses at one stage as a general ferreting and all-round dog. Unlike a lot of people I quite liked the look of the collie coloured or black ones.
-
Some of the 3/4 crosses are absolute missiles. Almost too fast and powerful for regular work.
-
What a unique and, sort of, beautiful dog. It does look a bit like Jar Jar Binks though! Would love to see one in the flesh.
-
Seen some great ones and some less so. I like them and as said you knew exactly what you were getting. Lots of blood from dogs out of his kennels in a lot of Lurchers walking around today. Sally produced their last litter about 2 years ago, I think.

Good stuff Are you using the vet wrap to protect dew claws, or for extra support? Or both?

Sad to read this but looks like she had a good life. Rip Brenn

Lovely looking dog, hope he gets a great home.

Another day on the roadside hedge

Great to see these posts. -
As I have pointed out in the General and Lurcher sections, it is highly likely that ferreting with dogs, lurcher work and other currently exempted hunting will also get mopped up in the proposed bill to ban trail hunting, in a similar way to Scotland. That means no more rabbiting and effectively a complete end to what is left of lawful Lurcher work and ferreting with dogs in the UK. We must be vigilant and at least try and engage in any consultations and the process, if there is any small hope of salvaging what’s left of that part of our precious rural heritage. W

Whilst not perfect, engaging with organisations like CA and Hunting

And there is every chance, like Scotland, lurcher work, ferreting and terrier work will get swept up in this and also banned as part of the ‘consultation’ and subsequent legislation Labour introduce in the New Year. The field-sport community in Scotland were surprisingly apathetic when their bill was going through the various stages, to the point many involved in Lurcher work and ferreting, for example, didn’t even know it had been banned, until it was too late. Hopefully that won’t be the case South of the border and the community will at least put some effort into saving what little is left
-
Northern Ireland’s turn next. John Blair is reportedly looking to introduce another bill to ban hunting in the new year. The last one he introduced sought to ban everything, a bit like that enacted in Scotland.

Cracker and I like that breeding. Good luck with her.

Poppy from puppy to working and her first catch
omegathelast replied to Poppysadventure's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Well done to you and Poppy and great to see retrieving valued, which all true working lurchers should ideally do. -
That’s very sad to hear. RIP. Fond memories of reading his, and others’ articles in SN as a young lad and consequently looking forward to every weekend being out from dawn until dusk with my first terrier and scruffy collie lurcher.
-
It is not business as usual, not even close. Lurcher work is finished in Scotland. It’s now illegal to hunt and/or catch a rabbit with a dog.
-
The Bill has been passed. Rabbiting is now illegal in Scotland.
-
It is correct and something I have been posting on here for some time. The Act will also include enhanced stop and search powers and deprivation orders banning offenders from keeping dogs. The SNP promised the ‘Greens’ they would look at hunting based on their coalition agreement which is actually all about Sturgeons independence dream. Sadly, the fieldsports community in Scotland have done very little to rebut this, presumably hoping it will go away. Well it hasn’t. The whole thing is flawed but it’s been allowed to get to this stage which is now probably too late. Sad.

Scottish Hunting with Dogs Bill
omegathelast replied to omegathelast's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
You can access the link to the e-lobby on the CA update at beginning of this thread. Just click on the e-lobby words. I still think urgent direct liaison with your MSP through letter or face to face is far better as the e-lobby is more to do with fox control and the licensing system. Do both! The CA and others are suggesting to the Scottish Government that the way to exclude rabbits from an effective total ban is for land owner permission to be required. That is exactly the same situation as in the rest of the UK.
