  1. Nice dog. Glad you put pic up, i was hoping some peeps would put some Russell pics up last week in reply to a thread I started.
  2. I don't see the problem, everyone knows don't breed a merle with a merle, like dont breed too closely if line breeding. I like merle and know that they are the first to go out of Hancocks kennels evrytime. Equally, I would be just as happy with a collie marked dog. Its all good. Although I do see the point you are making i.e. why risk it...
  3. As some of you may have seen from my recent posts myself and a friend are back into hunting after years off, we have secured permission and are just getting all our old gear together and replacing what we need. Our lamp is fine as it was bought just before we packed in but the battery pack is dead. The lamp is a Lightforce and I think its the smaller one so 140? It doesnt actually say and I'm a total technophobe so dont have a clue!! My question therefore is what is best battery for it in terms of the compromise between weight and running time? And are the new Lithium ones worth the extra mone
  4. Loving this thread and some superb photo's of lovely real working dogs. I don't care whether they are bred by Hancock or someone else, I love this cross!! Personally I dont see why you would want add Saluki to this mix, or anything else for that matter, although those that have seem happy I will keep forum posted with the progress of my mates 5/8ths
  5. Its full of lies,FACT ........So is this forum and indeed a lot of what has been penned in fieldsport articles and books by many other authors. That is also a fact. What makes his books a good read is probably because they do tread the fine line between fact and fiction. He was a notorious story teller but at least they are well researched and articulate and his more informative books are still relevant, useful and are standing the test of time.
  6. Wouldn't it lack a bit of oomph compared to the 1050? I think you'd be pleasantly surprised...and how much do you need for the road?
  7. mate, test ride the Tiger 800xc, ive just bought one after a test ride...brilliant allrounder
  8. im just reading that book now.........its ok
  9. good post.... nothing easier than to ruin a good retrieving dog with other dogs. was always uneasy with guests bringing their dogs for exactly that reason.
  10. All, I've been doing a bit of reading, reminiscing and looking at some old photo's recently. My first love was working russells all those year back, particularly smooth traditional often tri-coloured types (before the white lakeland fashion) Would love to see some pics - including Plummers - You just dont see as many nice smooth Russells anymore. Thanks in advance
  11. Some really good pics and honest comments on this interesting cross. I think the rationale behind the Hancock crosses is sound, after all, historically, the lurcher was a cross between a herding dog and sighthound. Natural herding which is simply hunting instinct will be very strong in the working blood collie studs he keeps so the foundations of a useful lurcher are undoubtably there. Plus, as has been said ellsewhere, the cross means you know exactly what you are going to get genetically whereas with lurcher x lurcher breeding that can be very hit and miss. There are simply too many
  12. All superb 'the thinking mans cross'!! My friend bought a merle Hanckock 5/8ths(3/4 beardie border x greyhound) last year and the bitch is coming along a treat. Good thread J.DOG
  13. Wrong way round in my opinion, start her on rabbits first is my advice. A terrier will start on rats at that age no problem but I wouldnt risk a lurcher, although if its bedlington bred you might be ok.........Patience is a virtue!! Good luck whatever you decide
  14. great thread...loving 'satan'!!! nice to see a good bobery pack in action.....
  15. I'm not far away either, I will keep an eye out. TOTAL F***ING SCUM.
  16. good luck I remember my first pup, it was a magical time Enjoy, look after him and enjoy bringing him on , read every book you can on the subject.....
  17. Brilliant and well done..... A lesson for the impatient among us.
  18. Good advice, although I would stay away from anything too exotic as it can be a lottery with temperament. You wont go wrong with collie cross or a bedlington cross. something like a collie x whippet/greyhound would be ideal, easy to train (something a lot of owners seem to overlook!!) and will serve you well if you give it a good life...dare I say a 5/8ths Hancock or might be perfect if you want something a bit stronger!!
