what makes a goodun ? digging only thread
stop.end replied to coonboy's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
a dog that has over 4-5 seasons and has never quit, no job too big no job too small...ten minutes or 10 hours it should matter not.... I think we all know when such and such is put in the vehicle the job or task matters not for you know he will see it through, they should live for earth work and earthwork only.... but thats just my opinion.. happy new year folks. -

stop.end replied to danny300's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
most imprtant...terrier who will do earth work and only knows earth work... and know at least someone with the same knowledge . all the rest will fall into place... (i.e) if hes willing to stay... with todays technology you will get him out... phones every 1 has 1... car same person will have 1 probably...( although in todays economic climate who knows) tools? well if you have an interest in terriers you should have them anyway... mates? always handy.. if none of the abov then why put your TERRIER at risk by starting terrier work at all if you have researched it... well im stumped!! -
what defines a working terrier?
stop.end replied to the durham digger's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
simple logic really... a terrier that will go to ground on quarry big enough it can face...(i.e.) not rabbits or rats or mice or voles, or put phesants out all day or maybe caught a shrew one day... good on the ducks he retreives? hi hes game he will scrap way all the terriers in sight... or one i often see.. a facebook terrier.. which is the owner spends all time telling lies about what the terrier can do on the computer or on the fone but not where it counts and thats UNDERGROUND IN THE DARK for many hours sometimes.... with a BIG set of teeth... totally ALONE... yes the other dogs stil -

dont think yous are looking at the bigger picture... or maybe looking past the main point... looks to me like some BIG PHARMA company stepped in with a lot of money and just so happened to have a VACCINE .... it would be laughable if it wasnt so serious.... now our beefs going to be pumped full of even more shite for humans to consume, while the old boy in the suit gets to wreak havoc in the countryside, with his TB spreading..... This is more proof that society is turning into completly dumbed down nation of zombies, who are ready to take the word of any lacky in a suit while anyone with

more hassle for northern terrier men
stop.end replied to longnancys's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Johnny sounds like you have never used a terrier for pest control?... maybe your a lab man or a lurcher man, or someone who just really has not done a lot with "WORKING BREEDS" now johnny most dogs who are bred for working purposes, LOVE and LIVE for WORK... so when a dog lets say, sees his master he gets very excited and wags his tail incessently showing his JOY, EXCITEMENT & LOVE for his master.... so when a terrier which is bred for work UNDERGROUND, works underground to quarry he is doing a job which he also LOVES & it EXCITES him, so there for a terrier who loves his job und -

i hope all them white dogs ..in that mans kennells are fit for a days work P3D?
-
surely the lines that you are crossing should be closely related? I mean the same blood but different sires & dams as to make sure the appropriate genes seem to gel for the appropriate work you intend to do with it, or are you your just studding the dog out willy nilly... to just any old russell or black or lakeland or whatever?

while we are throwing out suggestions..heres 1 a blue jrt is not a russell..its a russell or white terrier with obvious signs of another breed in the mix if you have a slaty grey/or blue as you call it in the mix... what it is im going to guess. maybe some border way back or if it has lakeland somewhere down the line maybe a little touch of bedlington blood has been thrown back but its just a suggestion. and it has passed its gene on in this mating,

enjoying reading this thread and the great advice your getting.. will be following this thread i think as im very interested in the harris hawks.. .

i agree 100% tommy if it does not draw tension and conflict then people clearly just aint interested, or the names of lines and how deep the dig!! instead of learning why terrier work is even carried out... they wanna know why, how, where, much, and is it available!!! its like an apprentiship when you have chosen your trade you seek the best man at that trade... not hear say!!! then as the terrier and the trade evolves, so should the humans!!... right now its not the terier thats feked.. its the man that owns it!!

TERRIER WORK. So, what is terrier work? What does it involve and how is it carried out? First and foremost it is a form of pest control. In fact it has many similarities with another widely practised form of pest control - ferreting. In both instances, it is a domestic animal fitted with a locator collar which goes below ground to locate and flush out another mammal. In both instances, the quarry may not always leave the earth and it may prove necessary to dig down in order to retrieve and dispatch it. In fact, the only real difference is that one involves a ferret and a rabbit, and the
