  1. In the main that really is not true, yes you have had idiots over the years running dogs which are not up to the job on bigger species and caused suffering, but no more than some of the stalkers/shooters who don't have a clue with miss placed shots and leaving runners out to die a miserable slow death. I think you really are showing your lack of knowledge and as for siding with the LACS, that disgusts me and most other TRUE hunters I am sure. :hmm:
  2. Just because they are old feckers doesn't mean they are right or it's the best way Some old feckers feed ferrets milk and bread and snap there teeth off...lol I am sure it will have the desired effect, but you run the risk of a injured dog. Just do it the normal way and introduce your dog to livestock slowly when it young and make it aware tto the dog that they are not on the menu, its not hard to do at all. Just takes a bit of effort Good luck
  3. Good luck to the fellow, I have only heard good reports about the man and found some of his articles on dog behaviour pretty good. Who knows maybe there is a market for ferreting holidays?
  4. Yes I would not use it regularly Thanks Skycat
  5. Hold on there people there is a world of difference between Metacam which is POM Nsaid and Arnica which is a homopathic remedy!! Arnica 15C does help reduce bruising effectively and I have found it is excellent given ASAP after injury or very hard work when the dog is sore. I have also used the Arnica Gels/creams externally with good results. Metacam has an action of being an anti inflammatory and also a pain killer, which is great when needed but I would start using it regularly when its not needed due to the pain killing action it has.
  6. This has been a long time coming since the last excellent book.........
  7. Can you buy just the 170 lens etc as a spare part? I was thinking of getting a 140 and then buying a 170 to add when needed..
  8. I often wondered what do people mean by a hard night/day, like how many runs/courses would you call hard day/night It's relative to the individual dog and how fit it is old it is etc? For a average dog(if there is such a thing) lamping rabbits anything over 15 runs is starting to be a decent work out, but it depends on the individual dog!
  9. After the standard rub down check over and cleaning the feet the dog gets a standard size meal of it's normal feed a hour of so after the end of the session. A good rub down and massage can make alot of difference to stiffness the next day. I do use electrolytes if we have had a grueller or two or if the dogs excerted itself more than usual.
  10. As in rough collie lassie type not border collie. how much collie is in it mate ? havent seen or heard of a rough collie cross befor , whats its attributes how does it work and for what tasks ? Its flat coated collie mate not rough all the best x38 looks well
  11. Alot of people get a good result using kelp and rock sulpher.
  12. Pretty well YES, a greater array of skills are needed to be a top class ferreting dog. Careful early session are essential IMO
  13. My Rough Collie X Greyhound photos around 6 -7 months
  14. Some good advice on this thread tomo and socks! Alot goes into a ferreting dog. One hell of a lot of skills need to be all there and this takes work and patience for both dog and owner. There is alot less to learn to lamp IMO and many people's standards are low for this too, working without a slip, run on command, good retrieve, etc etc are the basics.
  15. Is there still a vet at Poole greyhound track, I did make contact with him a few years ago but did not get round to using him.
  16. Eating herbivores poo is fine and quite normal. When dogs are eating their own or carnivores there could be a problem. The clinical name for this condition is Coprophagia, in English its also know as a depraved appetite. It can start for a range of reasons such as flavorings in cheap food, boredom in kennels or a genuine mineral deficiency. In most cases it is as much a behavioral problem as being a physical problem. The best solution I have found is using a good high quality mineral supplement such as Kelp seaweed as this will contain all 37 minerals and trace elements and also keeping o
  17. Good luck, not all that keen on the idea of a close breeding but if it locks the 'good traits' in and not any 'bad traits', it will be worth doing. But from what you say they have no bad traits as they are legends Good hunting Sirius
  18. I think some people are confussed you only use a clicker initially, so there really is little need to take one into the hunting field, as you phase it out normally? All the click noise does is tell the action it performed was correct and will get a reward, you can use a command in the same way. It can be a really easy and effective way to train a dog
  19. Tripe is a great stuff, but i would always try and add offal, red meat or bones, or a mixture of the lot ;-) Good value too I pay £2 a tripe.
  20. A gap of 4 - 6 hours before working the dog is fine, but feeding a main meal directly before working your dog is just plain stupid
  21. Lucky to have that rain Robert, the ground around here in the south is like iron......... Thats a great haul well done the dogs.
  22. I use a rucksack, it will fit 8 or so rabbits and the battery. The greatest benefit I have found to the rucksack is that it spreads the load better and saves my back
