One of the best dogs i ever saw didnt resemble what everyones idea of a lurcher should look like, it was collie blooded no doubt about that, but in shape it didnt look as if it had a great turn of speed. Then again it didnt draw the attention of every keeper just the sort of dog the old school poachers needed, believe me that dog was a first class pot filler, intelligent did not trust strangers but as previously stated handsome is as handsome does.

Took my dogs for a mooch on some permission today, it borders a garden centre. Along a hedgside for about 30 yards from ground level to about 4ft in height the garden centre owner had strung razor wire. Do any of you guys know the legality of using this in such a situation. cheers.

Who'd of thought it? A League employee breaking the law!

Thebedlington lurcher history
keepitcovert replied to shaunpauls7's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Getting back to the history of the beddy lurcher the original name was the rothberry fighting dog, bred by the gypsies in the rothberry forest area of northhumberland and later named the bedlington after the village of bedlington where they were reputedly bred. The ancestors of the breed are reputedly the dandie dinmont the otterhound and the whippet. One thing i do know having owned them is they are game as hell if bred off the working strains, and for small lurchers they punch well above their weight, mine was a fox killer that never jibbed, can be headstrong to the point of frustration, but -
So long as you show respect to those who gave their lives i dont think it matters whether you wear it, i always wear one. Its a matter of freedom of choice and freedom of choice is one thing they fought for.

Guy i know owns a couple of fishing ponds he spent a hundred thousand on stocking and putting disabled pegs in. The other week other anglers had to stop 3 poles from taking the fish they had caught. Now the guy who owns it has stopped all eastern europeans from fishing there. This week the local radio got hold of the story and interviewed the owner who put his case and said no way was he going to back down on this issue, anyway this polish fisherman rings in and says its in their culture to take and eat them, when asked if he had a license, guess what the answer was. Police dont want to get in

Goverment figures revealed today state that 124 thousand illegal immigrants due for deportation have gone missing surprise surprise. That equates to the population of cambridge. Now the great thing is this goverments attitude what are they going to do about it, answer is stick it on file bury your head in the sand and hope the problem goes away. what hope is there for this country when its being ran by a bunch of spineless pollitically correct tossers, rant over.

Favourite rabbiting dog / one for the pot dogs
keepitcovert replied to wuyang's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Had beddy crosses, whippets all capable dogs, now got a saluki whippet best 30 yarder ive ever owned 4 seasons and over 1000 rabbits, like a bullet off the mark. -
Stable doors and bolting horses spring to mind. Hypothetical question if hunting with dogs had been ingrained in the islamic culture of the immigrants in this country would the ban have been imposed, i think not, just food for thought.

Added sloes and sugar to a gallon of birch sap wine i made this year its seriously good.

Once went on the piss in islington with shane macgowan that was a serious session.

Frequent topic on here is when they reverse the ban. Forget it. it aint going to happen, reasons why 1 hunting with dogs isnt a moneyspinner. Now realistically can you see game shooting being banned or fishing for that matter, with an estimated 6 million anglers in this country and god knows how many employees in fieldsports related activities i reckon that aspect of our sport is safe until the next century. When the shit hit the fan the so called elitist sports bore the brunt. But in reality was hunting with dogs banned purely because it didnt generate enough revenue, and therefore in this po

training pups with the older trained dog
keepitcovert replied to coney clucky's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I like to train my dogs to the ferrets and nets with a good steady experienced dog say when about 9 to 10 months they can learn a lot off one, however lamping is a different kettle of fish i would never double up with any dog running two dogs on the lamp is not worth the risk, and if the pup is ever to make the grade then it should be able to do it on its own. -
Any idea what mix this dog is please?
keepitcovert replied to StephanieTock's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Ears look a bit airdaleish other than that would never have guessed in a thousand years. Agree on the suzuki whip grey, i have a saluki whippet and like a lot of them thrown more to the whippet. Do like that dog skycat looks a real usefull hound. -
I always ask them if they like the country side in the uk, and then proceed to point out that fieldsports have shaped the enviroment eg the large estates, woodlands, wetlands ect. I dont hate antis i just see them generally as misguided fools. The people i dislike are the psuedo country folk with the pet gundog or lurcher who dont know their arse from their elbow.

Start with the basics as soon as poss mate and get it used to the ferrets now it will save you any grief in the future and dont rush to get it working too many dogs are ruined by being too hasty youll know when the time is right for it, and if youve got the chance to work it with an experienced dog so much the better, they can come on in leaps and bounds working with a good experienced dog ATB .

There would be a lot of bruised egos in certain quarters if they didnt get an invite to be among the elitist few.

Very nice BBB. I like that a lot! What percentage is he? Sam Been running one of these for 5 years now best little 30 yarder ive owned taken over 1000 rabbits now you wont go far wrong with yours mate

Sat in the pub the other night talking to a mate, subject came up on how much money the pair of us had spent on hunting, cost of buying and keeping your dogs, vet bills, ferrets nets ect not to mention guns, fishing gear, 4x4s, hell i reckon ive spent more on this game than i paid for my first house, must be well into four figures. How much do you reckon to have spent in your time.

what part of lurcherwork appeals to you most?
keepitcovert replied to mynirvana's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Was bitten by the bug when i first saw a friends whippet work, that was over 50 years ago and i still get the same buzz nowadays. For me the best part of lurcherwork is watching my dogs work as a team both of my dogs have good noses and watching them quarter a field to lift their prey is a great experience. Lamping is great sport very productive, but id rather watch my dogs working the nets and picking off the bolters. On the plus side did you know that owning a dog prolongs your life by 3 years on average. YIS KIC. -
Johnny come lately not in the same league as jack hargreaves.
-
Remember seeing this when it was first shown and it started a trend in whirrier ownership seemed like everyone wanted one after watching this episode. Jack was an extremely knowlegable countryman dont think weel ever see his like on tv again mores the pity.

Depends on what you class as a way of life if you earn your living at the game then you can say its a way of life, if you live off state benefits and supplement your dole money by a bit of poaching ect than no that aint no way of life.
