  1. Do you reckon that the internet and hunting sites are having a positive effect on hunting. Seems to me that nowadays that reputations of certain lines of dogs are being bulled up, by a large degree of self promotion by certain breeders. Gone are the days or so it seems that respect for good dogmen and their dogs was earned on the hunting field not on some keyboard. Looking at the increase in lurcher ownership over the last few years has the internet produced any positive effect on the future of fieldsports what do you think. YIS KIC.
  2. Saw a couple of lurchers of this cross about 20 years ago often wondered what they were like as workers. Anybody using one of these or did you ever see one in action. YIS KIC.
  3. Being jocks theyl be the richest people in the graveyard only joking my celtic friends.
  4. John prescott said there was nothing wrong with a comprehensive education, then promptly sent his kid to a private school says it all really.
  5. A fox could certainly kill a small lap dog type, no way would it kill a lurcher, seen whippets struggle when mixing it with one, but a fox is too clever to risk a potentialy life threatening injury when it has the option of escape. When cornered ive seen them give a good account of themselves, one little trick that always made me wonder is when they roll over spraying piss all over, presume its trying to temporarily blind the dog, can any of you foxing guys explain that one.
  6. Real speed machines these mate, that can sometimes be their downfall, take a look at the type of ground you will be working, whip greys excell on golf courses playing fields ect whereas collie crosses tend to be good at general mooching and lamping ect. Theres a lot to recommend both types.
  7. Same thing happened to me and two mates, two keepers jumped out on us took the car reg and reported us to the police, copper that came around said he had to follow it up as the local squire had got wind of it, Outcome was we appeared in court on a charge of armed trespass the local beak just said what the hell were we doing in court and dismissed the case giving the two keepers a bollocking for wasting their time. Found out later the keepers had brought a private prosecution as the police didnt want to know,
  8. Little incident i recall from when i was about 18 i thought id share with you. At that time i had a whipgrey which i was walking along a country road near where i live now. As a few of the older guys will remember i heard the familiar clicking sound of the local plods push bike (sturmey archer gears and small leather belt fastened on the back hub) anyway he pulls up and said to me can that dog do a hare yes its had a few i said. Right couple of fields down theres a hare in the middle of it he said, fancy giving it a run, any way as i had permission on that land i thought why not. Slipped the d
  9. Ive got a non ped bitch 22tts weighing 34lb dash of saluki in both sides of her lineage and shes the best rabbiting dog ive ever owned, yeah non peds are generally faster if your into racing, but ive got to admire what some of the working whippet forum lads are doing, ok some seem very keen to hang onto the KC tag but at least breeding proven worker to worker can only improve the breed. Anyway mate i would look for a dog that will make between 25 to 30lb that should easily serve your purpose, good luck with your choice.
  10. Cheers for posting this tracey, youve done me a favour my missus wants me to breed my whippet also called molly by the way. But at 5years old ive got great reservations, would hate to lose what has been my best rabbiting dog, hope this will make her think twice. Good luck with the pups certainly look healthy little buggers.
  11. East yorks mate the land of prairie sized fields and flinty ground really used to test the hare dogs feet. Nowadays just rabbits, tree rats ,winged game, dogs nowadays are saluki whippet, collie grey beddy grey still love the game.
  12. Two guys killed in the sidecars this year one aged 67 the passenger 59 wouldnt fancy my chances with a 67 year old driver.
  13. Its a real education on this forum these are some of the facts ive learned on here. (1) anyone reading CMW cant be a real hunter (2) tumblers and smithfields still exist ask jeff burrell.(3) all bull x owners are chavs. (4) whippets arent a real mans dog all they do is shiver and yap, not to mention their bad feet. (5) anyone owning a plummer book obviously knows jack shit. (6) god help you if you own a hancock bred dog. (7) anyone selling a dog on here is a puppy peddler. ( all saluki crosses are untrainable. Help me out if ive missed any facts. All these are true because ive read them on her
  14. A genuine smithfield collie/lurcher. 2an ibizan hound. 3 my old beddy killed in tragic accident.
  15. The one thing not mentioned is a beddy x can have a brilliant nose hence the reason it makes such a good ferreting companion, i dont see why anyone would breed one for the coat as a beddys linty coat offers very little in the way of protection, beddy xs tend to breed very typey. The two ive owned were hard to train but worth the end result. tempremant can be great and can be fiery little b******s. Remember in the 80s kerry blues were being crossed with whippets but i havent seen one of these for years.
  16. Usually grown by men going bald.
  17. I didnt like him anyway, he wasnt right in the head. Mad stephen braveheart.
  18. Sat in the pub was too embarrasing to watch, dont blame the manager, blame the egotistical w####rs on the pitch.
  19. Old farts now but the kinks were great 20th century man wrote 40 years ago must be the most relevant song ever check out the lyrics, wish i could upload it but this pc is crap.
  20. Smiths, floyd, but for pure insanity CAPTAIN BEEFHEART.
  21. Your thinking along the same lines as me, lurchers have never been so numerous and that is not in their favour.
  22. Looking at the difference of modern day athletes to those of say 60 years ago there is a huge difference in the times clocked for various events. Take for example roger bannister breaking the four minute mile in 1954, major news at the time, looks pretty sad compared to todays time of 3.43 a massive difference. Question is have todays running dogs- lurchers call them what you like evolved along a similar path. We all have read about the dogs of yesteryear being credited with super intelligence and working ability eg the legendary smithfield, but were those dogs really that good or were they th
  23. Fancy a good weekend for nowt. www.springboardfestival.org
  24. A lot were very good fox dogs beddys can be as hard as nails. Since when were bullxs 100% fox killers ive seen some that wouldnt mix it with a fox, one even jacked and was shown up by a whippet that held its ground. Not having a go at bullxs but no breed is 100%. very true mate i was just meaning a generalisation, most people who want to do foxes go for bull crosses, not everyone tho. if you wanted a fox dog pre-ban would you have picked a beddy cross or bull cross Just a matter of personal preference mate both types can do the job.
