  1. Im a big fan of the whippet when worked at what best suits them, would i have another, definitely not.saying that i like lurchers, but the vast majority i would,nt give kennel space to either. Its all down to personal preference and what best suits the individuals hunting and family lifestyle.
  2. Good luck, keep us posted how it all works out.
  3. Cheers mate I'm not giving up its only a little mistake plus with him being young i think that will help ill work as hard as I can to get it sorted theres no way id give up hes not just a dog to me ,if I can't sort it ill work him on land with no stock if need be thanks mate A dog thats unreliable around stock should be dealt with appropriately, even when there is no stock about a dog can get on a chase that will bring it amongst them, its never an easy or palatable decision, especially with a dog thats a part of the owners lifestyle,it will most likely learn, they usually do,if not then its d
  4. A dog can be bombproof with stock until its sees them running in front of it,then the prey drive can kick in,when you think a dog is stockbroken,do all the training again to re-inforce the message, once can happen to the best of owners, sometimes twice with certain hard headed jukels,if it happens more often its time to take the shovel with you.
  5. Another old saying, your stud dog is half your kennel. Not heard that one in my book of old sayings..will take your word for it though How many now would recognise the right or wrong dog that would best suit a bitch of the right standard, now its appearance that dictates most haphazard breeding, suitability and workmanship is often a poor second. The majority of breedings now have little thought for future development.
  6. I once looked after an aviary, traps poison box,s set on 3 sides, the birds thrived for years, then in one night a pair of bali starlings that were invaluable to the breeding project at that time, met their fate at the attentions of a rat,a learning lesson that taught me to be alert at all times to the obvious that no amount of precautions could oversee, another time a colony of pure Gouldians lost eggs and chicks to a single mouse.Never say never, because it will bite you in the arse.
  7. If the best right strain of dog to produce a running machine i.e, a lurcher,is a terrier, then the initial breeding is flawed,i understand the minerals that a terrier will give to a breeding attempt at running jukels, but to me its like one step forward for two back,if there are no better options available, then fair play, but a lesser option is often better than a worthless first.
  8. Id steer away from this cross for a youngster,a dog that will learn the owner and adapt to his work ethic would be better suited,a collie cross ticks all the box,s.
  9. dogs are no detterent to mice, rats and external and internal parasites.
  10. Thats true but you would still look for the best dog you could get to mate to them, Its not always the best dog that produces the goods, its often the dog that best suits the bitch.
  11. If you want a planted aviary, then its pots or soil, soil harbours germs and parasites,as in intestinal worms,an open roof will also be a source of the same, from wild bird droppings.Mice and rats climb,so no amount of underground wire will deter them, mice will squeeze through the narrowest of wire, rats will climb and find a weak wooden barrier to chew through and gain access. The only way to counteract this is to cover the roof and artificially water the plants and put poison stations and traps around the aviary boundaries.Traps and poison work 24 hrs a day.
  12. How many kennels as the dog you own now, been in?,what will become of it when you source another?.
  13. The only terrier that will produce the goods on a regular basis,is the Beddy hybrids,im not a fan of terrier infused lurchers as i believe there are far better options about that will do a better job, most of the fads that are undertaken, usually for a romantic rather than practical purpose, are just that, romantic forays into producing another, basically useless, litter of jukels that will suit the needs of the less discerning hunter and chancer. If nothing but a terrier is available to further a lurcher hybrid, its time to reflect anew and choose a different path.
  14. You don,t,my metal dishes are bashed to feck in winter breaking the ice, topped up again in the morning and evening, all thats needed,a dog won,t die of thirst in the few hours the waters frozen.
  15. A pup will learn more and become better educated with a few forays like that, its always been the best way to bring a pup on.To many people become confused with starting a pups education and learning young and entering a pup to work which its unready or equipped for.
  16. Ive never owned a dog yet that suffered without an heat source in the kennel, never had one lose condition either,a dry bed free from draught and damp is all most dogs need,i can go into the garden in the lowest of temperatures and the dogs will fly out of the kennels wanting to be out and about. In the harshest of conditions the cold as little effect on the average lurcher that has no heat,a dry bed,i use deep straw,is more than adequate.I put a board up for the dogs to crawl over to stop them dragging the straw out, when they have done the dogs suffered not one iota.Dogs are better equipped to
  17. In an ideal world a days legal activity would make for an interesting read,to many did,nt have the intelligence to keep it that way without incriminating themselves and giving a few undesirables the ammunition to tar the rest, some were more interested in chasing a name for themselves than adding anything constructive and legit. It takes from the site but protects it from the numptys and the egos who hunt for the cudos and not the sport.
  18. no he keeps them for rabbits well they breed these dogs 4 show but there no good running thin down.dogs that big blow after 1 min Do you have learning difficulties?.
  19. That dog will come in handy for chasing Santa off the roof and nobbling Rudolph,no smutty remarks please.
  20. So basically some tits ruined a jukel or stolen it,priceless.Id never advocate buying a yearling, its the easy lazy option, but at times a dog comes along, usually from a wannabe thats got bored with walking, feeding and cleaning up shit, that may be better served in another kennel, these jukels often blossom and become competent enough to warrant a decent and caring home,at times. The better option is to source a pup,put in the hours and yardage and reap your own rewards,we all know, due to circumstances beyond our control, that a dog ready to go is a more fitting need, they are seldom the means to an
  21. One mans jacker, then its often down to the owners inability to harness the mutt correctly, will be anothers mans pride for life.
  22. aint turned into an arguement with me more like a disagrement everyone has different opinions would you of told someone you didnt know that they just made themselves look a right tool just for saying they show their dogs? Showmen usually are tools, their dogs are seldom much better, ive read some of St,s posts and he seems to be a worker of dogs before showman,id rather have a worker before looker, but,as fortune as blessed my eye and kennel, ive got both, whoopy do.
  23. Well gaffer if i owned smart looking jukels, like you, that also worked,id be more than happy, bollocks i allready do,does the sisters to yours that have won shows all over the country make them better workers,or the brother to yours that as also won cup after cup after cup, make them a better jukel in the field,no they don,t and never will, the real test of a dog is the chase and catch,if they chase, catch and look cushty, all the better,id rather feed and look at a looker than an ugly fecker.
