Looks like it's had a few dings Rob but, the grain is beautiful. For £25 it's a hell of a bargain to work with. You'll have a beautiful stock at the end of this. Keep us posted how you go mate! Simon

Accuracy is the real power test of any air rifle Corinium Stew. It's not the higher the FPS or the FPE that counts. It's more about how precise it is at putting a pellet on a dot time and time again with enough power to kill humanely. The average range you can see a rabbit or pigeon's head clearly and cleanly defined at, in your scope, is far away enough for a 10ft/lb rifle shot to reach it with energy to spare. Better still if you have 11+ft/lbs to begin with But with precision accuracy, it is amazing what ranges you can shoot out to with confidence. Simon

I notice Skot you are happy using differing headsizes between your FTTs and JSBs. But clearly, you are getting better alround results with the JSBs. I'm going to have to spend cash on JSB EXACT and try 4.50. 4.51 and 4.52mm headsizes. Either this will prove one size that's perfect and I'll stick with it forever more. Or I can write off ever considering using these for good! Simon

@ woodcote 1 I'm looking for a small, compact, lightweight scope for HFT target shooting of around 3-9x40 AO as the ideal spec, shooting on 7x. You really don't need more than that for any air rifle shooting situation to be honest. The Bushnell Scopechief 4-14x50 I have is just fantastic for hunting but. a bit too heavy for the rigours and contortions of HFT on my 97. Bushnell Elite series are fantastic scopes, Wasted-For-Ever Simon Edted to add. I'm experiencing the same effect as you Nick/Sparky, with wearing glasses and trying to see through a Hawke Endurance 3-9x42 fixed-foc

I'm absolutely delighted with the outcome Andy! It's not rocket science mate, true, but it ain't simple bish, bash and hope-for-the-best either! It's brilliant work you've done here. And don't go knocking yourself laddie. He who never made mistakes = made now't! Call me if you are about and we'll get some shooting sorted pal. To you all. Si, Chris, Skot. Thank you gentlemen. It is indeed a lovely rifle. I'm going to go look for JSB EXACTS in 4.50mm if they make them in that size. It seems there aren't many barrels that these pellets don't work well with. Best wishes to all. Simon

I've had and still have some high mag scopes ( up to 18X) but, I always shoot more accurately on 6X, 7X and 8X and these give an excellent sightpicture with a decent field of view throughout the changing light towards nightfall.. A decent quality 3-9x40 AO is all you need really for any air rifle. Paralax adjustment or correction with your scope is very good and important to have. Paralax error is the degree of incorrect angle with which your eye views the reticle down the tube to it. A correcting scope allows you a certain amount of error and corrects the degree of error. But reall

Thank you gentlemen for such kind replies. I definitely recommend anyone look into these Sandwell Field Sports kit for their own HW97s. Top quality in = Top quality out! And a top lad with the knowledge to fit it and hone it all! The KT Thumbhole stock I have is beech and in mint condition and was only used to test-shoot the rifle, which very quickly established what needed to be done to get it up to standard. I understand these cost a way over £200 to buy so, I'd be looking for offers around £180 posted. Skot I'll consider your offer mate, but I really need cash for the new scop

Goodmorning Gentlemen. I've not posted a detailed review of my HW97K project as, it's been an ongoing job with Andy's hard work and expertise bringing it up to a performance standard. But after giving it a full weekend's testing and hunting on my permission, I have to write something that expresses the gratitude I have for my dear pal and shooting mate. And what he has done that turned this rifle into a slick competition-accurate rifle. This HW started out as a 3-month old 2nd-user .177 HW97KT I picked up for £350 from Red Beck Shooting Supplies near Wakefield.. A bit steep maybe t

From Rags To Riches (Contains Some Hunting Footage)
pianoman replied to zini's topic in Airgun Hunting
I'm not in the least surprised to see how well this rifle has turned out. Brilliant rifle+ Correct pellet + Brilliant shooter = This is what you get!! The finest spring break barrel air rifle you can own this one . No question, bar none; the HW80 is deserving of its status as an air rifle legend. How well they can be returned from the ravages of careless owners and restored to perfection again is all here with this example. Mine is I think, a rare model with a 21-inch barrel. Andy tells me the usual standard length is 19.25 inch. It is an astonishingly accurate, ready-to-hand, ready-to-go -
Hi Gamatech. You don't mention how much range distance your garden's size offers. And, if I've understood it right, you are intending on shooting targets set up through the open door to the inside end of your shed at targets set up within it? But, as a start, I'd make a good and safe zero and practice target out of an old drawer, stuffed with old pillow or two to pack it and set it up at the extreme distance your 'range' offers, whatever it is. Pellets can soon chew through a decent thickness of wood panels and shed walls are not that thick and pellet-absorbing! Or harder, thicker wood pan

I can still shoot a spring rifle just as well and accurately, as others can with a pcp and my eyesight needs glasses nowadays Ghillies. It's not the rifle that has changed. It's me, old sport! Edited to add. I'm thinking my next purchase will be a Bushnell scope for my HW97K. Andy's work has transformed this rifle into a superbly smooth precision accurate air rifle and I need a quality, lightweight optic to match the amazing potential the rifle has.

25 metre zero and a max range of metres or there abouts. I'm getting on and I'm not as good as I once was woodcote. I've shot rabbits at over 100 metres with my HW80 but, those days are gone. Simon

To be honest woodcote, yes. Much less complicated and clearer, uncluttered sight picture than mildots and SBC ladder scales; which are brilliant for accurate target shooting. But 30/30 makes for a much better hunting optic BUT it's a personal experience thing. We are not so much hampered by Bullet drop factors as cartridge rifles and ammo are. I learned a long time ago to shoot on a fixed magnification point on the zoom. I find I shoot on 6X mag with my HW77 at 30 metres zero centre-to-centre on the crosshair. This gives me a precise 40 metres on the holdover point of the post where t

Expert Opinions ..............
pianoman replied to Buster321c's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
Never known anything like this with a spring rifle. Hot weather makes springers warm up and shoot efficiently, much quicker with fewer pellets than would be the case in winter, when performance is, to coin a phrase, sluggish. Could it be that, the sun's heat is causing expansion in the barrel, thus causing a degree of micro-warping? Or the regulator's metals causing incipient air leaks and thus reducing the rifle's performance??? :hmm: The only thing I know anything about effects of hot sunlight, is snipers' rifles incorporate a heat-dissipating jacket around the barrel to keep th -
Always! I've been shooting with 30/30 reticle scopes for the past 35-odd years and I love em! Currently I have a trusted Simmons Whitetail Classic 4.5-14 X 40 AO which I alternate with a Simmons Pro Air 6-18 X 40 scope for my FAC HW80 .22. These are still the best I've used for this rifle. My sub-12 ft/lb HW77 .22 has a Bushnell Scopechief 4-14 X 50 AO on it. All of which have 30/30 reticles. All of them absolutely superb for hunting or target shooting. All of them as precise and precision accurate as they were brand new. I also have a Hawke Endurance 3-9X42 with a 'German

Webley Omega, Almost A Great Gun.
pianoman replied to thursodog's topic in General Airgun Discussion
Hi Chris. Great read this pal. I had an Omega .22 with several other Webley air rifles I've had back in the 1980s to the 1990s. Webleys' were a joy back then with the most beautiful deep blueing and nicely-handling stocks with white spacers and grip caps on a lot of their guns. Outwardly, they looked really superb, well made air rifles. I thought it was a very accurate rifle, as air rifles went at that time. What it was like inside, well, my dad was not so much a tuner by modern standards, certainly not to yours or Andy's standards of tuning but, he was a great tweak and twiddle man -

Tx200 Tune Or Not?
pianoman replied to crazycraddog's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
The only thing wrong with the Pro Sport Nick, is that, they don't make a dedicated left hand version of it, as they do with TX200. Otherwise I'd have two in .177 and .22 cals. -
Maybe the way forward now, tomas87, is to list all the guns recommended here, google them for details, specifications and prices; and go out and find them in the shops to try him with them for size ???

Bad Advice In An Airgun Magazine?

Only these mags could produce three pages of text on where to find a pellet headsize. Anything but the commonsense answer; "Turn the feckin' tin over!" John Darling must be spinning in his grave! -
Bad Advice In An Airgun Magazine?
pianoman replied to secretagentmole's topic in General Airgun Discussion
Your shooting is a personal affair. It's up to you how honest you are with yourself as to your ability to shoot accurately at whatever distance you can. But Rabbit attracting spray? Cheapo 50 quid springers and their shitty cheap tru-glo sights as good as Weihrauch, Air Arms and Diana? What a load of bullshit! More myths and legends are proffered as fact by these mags than anything. As Rabbits see in poor, fuzzy monochrome and then, only when things move (that's why they can sense and hear footfall and smell human scents at fantastic distances) , any green disruptive cammo pattern clothin
