Pellet Impact - Could Less Be More?
pianoman replied to Jonjon79's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
Honestly. 12 ft lbs is not much to go with as it is. And true to say, there are always flyers and runners. Ammo is not always as consistently made and sorted these days as it should be. 15 to 20 FPE is where air rifles should be as an effective hunting arm. trouble is, thanks to the education system here, we seem to produce more cretins than anywhere else If an idiot wants to commit acts of vandalism, or worse, with one, they should be prosecuted and locked up. Not the rest of us penalised for their shit. -
Hi there Mac. Nice one mate. I've packed my HW80 stock for the post to you this afternoon. I can't express my gratitude enough, this is so kind of you. I'm looking forward to seeing how you progress with this. I know I'm unkind to these Chinese SMK rifles but, I'm absolutely spoilt by what I get from my Weihrach springers. Are these any good? I sometimes wish we had the same sort of gun laws as they have in the US for owning former WW2 rifles. like these. You can buy a good condition Mosin Nagant 7.62mm rifle and PU scope for a couple of hundred dollars and no license in some pl

Pellet Impact - Could Less Be More?

IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT CALIBRE YOU SHOOT WITH...MORE IS ALWAYS MORE, IS ALWAYS BEST....HOW SO? I read somewhere (I won't say where or who, other than it was an PCP speciallist air rifle tuner who should know a lot better.) in which he stated... if you have an air rifle set at 10 ft/lbs, and if you have the ability, you can hit a rabbit's head out to 90 yards and there would still be enough retained kinetic energy to humanely kill it. RUBBISH! Absolute twaddle. That is wantonly dangerous information. I have personally hit a rabbit at 40 metres full on the side of its head and it did -

It's not wise to have comments on how effective low power is taking currency. Next thing you know we'll have Terry Doe and the Airgun press editors advising the Government Home Office that the consensus of shooters is 9-10 foot pounds is more than enough and that's how precedents can end up being set. Knowing what an ignorant bugger Theresa May is on most things she is required to examine and rule in the Law on, she'll likely say; "Oh well there's no further need to issue Firearms Licenses for air rifles or any weapon less than 223 cartridge! Look at the money we'll save on application -
How Good Is An 18 Year Old Weihrauch Hw80 .22???

No electricity and no batteries and it blares away? That would convince me enough! What a great story. Thanks Mark. Any more?? I've just been out to my hotel perm for a dawn rabbit session before the guests start waking. Took my HW80 out and laid out another seven rabbits and a Squirrel. The mist swirling from the dew makes this place look like a fairy tale palace. It is the magic of this sport when the lighter mornings start to come that you can find yourself alone in another, world from another time long past, before the day begins for the rest of mankind. This place has a large par -

Aw Mark you've got to tell a story or few now mate.! Never met a builder yet who says he didn't believe in ghosts. And for the sceptical rest who say There's no such thing? That's only because you ain't seen or experienced one......YET! I had an old farmhouse in North Yorkshire fifteen years or so ago. It was haunted by a cloaked figure who wandered about outside as well as in. I never saw him but, our neighbours told us there were some strange sounds coming from the place while it was empty. A man sobbing was what they said. Their property joined this place My partner at the -

It is random. A three bedroom cottage and former village bakery built in 1850. The bakery was wound down in the 40s and joined to the cottage as an extension is now my dining room and kitchen. Sometimes we get a whiff of baking bread early at dawn. I thought I was imagining it but, Helen smells it too. And there's a rich smell of pipe tobbacco occasionally rises in my study in the early hours. It really is haunted this old place. But it's really lovely here. We have an achre of beautiful garden of three lawns and orchards of fruit trees. Apples, Plum, Pear and Damsen. Helen makes good -

I love that Tru Oil finish as I actually like a polished shine on my stocks jim, It's a fairly dark finish this HW80 stock which I like but, that is possibly a series of dye coats that make it appear this way. Just bring out the grains and figures with whatever you think is proper. It's not heavily dinged or dented but, just tatty and worn from years of use, so, anything you can do, is only going to vastly improve its appearance. We have a spare room so you will stay the night with us........ Only the two ghosts here... An old man, which once scared the hell out of Helen -
Cracking good night's shooting you have there Mitch. Superb rifle you have too.

I may deliver the stock in person and then i can show you how to shoot a springer properly lol Or i could just stay for a cuppa and you can show me how to shoot one lol atvbmac  And we'll have the evidence on your camera and uploaded ! If you don't mind the drive down to RAF Coningsby's area in Lincolnshire then, I think we can run to something more than just a cuppa for you Jim. That would be really proper as we can fit the stock and zero her back in. And ,as I don't film my shooting but, I feel bit uncomfortable at times when I can't show something or how a par -

REZ. Meet up with me to shoot my HW80 in Summer will be fine James. I'll dare say I'll have my stock back from Mac by then! Looking forward to meeting you James. Best.regards Simon -
Excellent write-up report Andy. So now, if I have this understood correctly, where currently, I have to carefully fill my Regal to about half-way middle of the yellow band of the rifle's guage, to get 11.3 ft/lbs @160 bar output, you can fill the cylinder all the way to the top of yours and get consistent full-power performance and a lot more shots? If that is so, that makes this a brillianrt rifle now. Especially if you don't have to keep an eye on it as much. I've got about ten tins of Air Arms Field .177 4.51mm which it absolutely loves. I'm thinking might be an idea to use t

Bit unfair to say Daystate owners bury their head in the sand Mitch? We bought them for the same reasons you did mate? Truthful answer? I bought Helen a Daystate Huntsman Classic purely on spec because we loved the look of it and the handling and superb accuracy it has and it has never given us cause to regret buying it. It is a really lovely rifle and like David says, it too, doesn't miss a beat If I have a case for genuine reproach it lies less with the Regal I have and more with unscrupulous buggers in the gun trade who conned me for my lack of knowledge with technical tuning aspects a

HEAR HEAR DAVID. WELL SAID!

I like that rifle he has for this shot. It looked really very nice and a beautiful bolt action.

Me? Seriously chomping at the bit to see how Andy's Regal is going to perform John! ATB Simon

pianoman replied to pianoman's topic in Airgun Hunting
Not as much as you might think Tom. If the job of tuning has been done right. It takes a bit of getting used to at first as it is a bit sharper than the normal 12 ft/lb tune produces. The gun is a stable carriage for recoil and the oversize cylinder absorbs a lot of volume shock being rapidly released under the forces of the spring piston. A correct hold technique for spring rifle shooting and you'll have it mastered. It's fair to say not all spring air rifles take kindly to being tuned to high levels of energy output. But the HW80 seems to take it all in her stride. What is vitally -
It does look really well and good doesn't it!

Mac my dear lad you are the kindest soul. PM me your address and I'll take it off the rifle and post it over to you this coming week. I have a spare HW80 Left hand stock I can put on, after I gave AndyFR1968 my HW80K .22 for his two young lads to cut their springer teeth on. He has a right hander '80 stock so, I have my spare, so you lads can take all the time you want. Having seen you workmanship times before Jim, it's going to be just beautifully done. You just wouldn't do it any other way would you!. I'm really very humbled by such kindness. Thank you dear man. Simon. -

Thank you so much for these kind responses gentlemen. and I'll try answer some points here. This is a beautiful permission on veg, barley and corn crops. It's busy working all year with seasonal crops and there's a lovely wood with a sloping ground, sheltered from the winds and a little brook stream of running fresh water through it. Just heaven for rabbits to live, breed and multiply! When I started shooting here in the spring of a couple of years ago, my first weekend I bagged over 60 rabbits with this HW80. The place is very busy with rabbits and the farmer and his two sons shoot .22 -
It's does me good to see the Webley name back in the air rifle business. A shame though, if they are wholly owned by Hatsan. They always stood for British-at-its-best quality in their air rifles and the made really lovely guns. Some of them became very much the sought-after must-have air rifle of the 70s and 80s till they went broke in the early 2000s. Poor, inept British management, as usual, ruined what was a proud, household name in shooting. Seems to be the way of things with British corporate affairs these days. I've owned a number of Webley spring air rifles and they were beautif

Good evening Gentlemen. Well, I went out on a farm permission tonight and decided on taking my ' old girl ' 18 years old HW80 .22. I haven't been out with her for almost a year now but, after a chat here with Rez about HW80s and why he should have one (Oh yes, you do need one jamie!) the other day, I decided to take mine out of the cabinet and see how sh'e been without a shot fired from her for quite a while. After a lengthy zero-up produced a quite amazing group of about 25 shots going through the same 5p-sized hole at my preferred 30 metres range I was out with her into the fields o

Wonderful! Does you good to see the youngsters taking up with their dads and grandads. That's the future of our sport there, in these little hands. Well done Jon and Sophie, Mac and Little Hunter. Those beaming smiles don't fade with time when a good shot well taken brings another tasty rabbit or pigeon for the pot.!

Who does do this to dogs - and cats for that matter?? These beautiful animals are so full of unconditional love for us. Thet have nothing but us to look after and care for them. Honestly. I despair for us all when I see this. Where is humanity here? dogs and cats are highly intelligent, reasoning animals. This is like attacking and beating children. Well, I hope whoever does this, meets with the same treatment they dished out to this poor little soul. No mercy. No bargaining. Just beaten utterly within an inch of their worthless pathetic coward b*****d lives. It was right to post this
