I will agree to a certain extend jr with what you have said.I would not and have never bred from a bitch or dog that was not capable of finishing a fox ,but thats a different topic. Now what you say is true if you have a huntsman waiting with the pack for a bolt, well then the quicker the better for the terrier mans sake, but i personally dont think you can breed such a dog.Its either a sounder..mixer or the harder type and as said already a fox will bolt from a ferret let alone a terrier. Some dogs dont and wont put enough presure on a fox to drive him to a stop so he has plenty of time to bolt p

YR ive had some very difficult digs over the years and a lot were pre locater, but the satisfaction of breaking through to your terrier after hours of hard graft on both the dogs behalh and your own is second to none. Not all the bolts in the world could compare to it,and believe me i have been in some awkward places,a lot of them i should not have even been on the land let alone diging it.A bolt is grand if you have lurchers about and you want a run but as for guns i dont see any sport in shooting a fox.I dont dig for hounds so i dont need a bolt.I have dug under farm buildings, through the floo

f**k me ftb you really gave it shit there but have to agree with you very well put.

Never bought a dog that just worked fox in my life, but i did give plenty of them away for free or put them to sleep, all pre ban of course.
-
Seen a couple work years back noting got by either of them when to ground, hard as nails with bite to match. The man that had them was caught diging where he should not have been and got out of dogs after that, pity as they were the only ones i ever seen round my way.

JR how can it shift if its in a stop end and if it does it means the dog has let it past which also means the dog is shite.Im at it a long time, since the mid 70s and i have seen that they either bolt straight off or they go to a stop.I have also heard lads make excuses for there dogs when you are diging down and just about through and then a bolt. They then turn around and say it was not in a stop only in the tube after maybe diging for 2 to 3 hours, when the simple answer is the fox had pushed by the dog end off.Any terrier that lets a fox push them should not be bred from.

Nice pair of terriers, are they worked to ground,no offence meant but they look very clean around the muzzle for such strong looking animals, especially the dog he looks like he could murder a fox.

crushed granite aggregate in your concrete mix . Ever tried blackjack, used on the bridges to seal them so cant be bad gear and all the better if you know someone who works on them.

a dog that stays wae a fox until it bolts or dug to, but never been dug to cos they have bolted lol If it stays till dug to then it aint a bolter, and if it dosent and comes out then its a quitter.I dont think there is any such terrier as a fox if not in a stop end given a chance will bolt from a hard dog same as a sounder, and if they dont bolt then i for one would not be impressed with a terrier coming away. Some lads like a terrier that will do maybe 20 minutes to ground and if no bolt come away and move on but that is not terrier work in my eyes.I would much rather get a dig no matt

Springers or Cockers, what price do springer pups of good working dogs make over with you.Not having a go or anything like that just curious...

Good strong looking lakey, atb with him next season.

Was there not bull blood in d.wheeler's line of terriers.

We dont just breed from what ever is about. The patterdale dog we used was about 9 year old and tried and tested to a very high standard week in week out not just an odd dig here and there. The staff bitch was also well tried an as ive said before on here was dug to on several occasions being she is only a small bitch but very game.Just look at a lot of the black dogs been bred today with big bully heads on them and say there is no bull blood in them. With selective breeding there is noting wrong with the bullx, there's plenty of shite been bred with patterdale's at the minute from people breeding
-
At the end of the day most working terriers have bull blood in them of some persentage from years back. There's nothing wrong with a bullx some are good steady diging dogs and most work to a very high standard.I seen some great bullxrussells work in my time and i have a bullxpatt at the minute which is a very usefull little dog.As far as hard goes people differ on their opinions on hard,as long as they stay till dug thats what matters.Nobody wants a dog that goes in fights its quarry for 20 minutes and comes out in a mess.I have owned and seen black dogs that were a lot more stuped than any bul

I used to love fishing at night then i got caught and they beat the bollox out of me and i got fined almost a grand, that sort of took the good out of it.Wont say i still do it but wont say i dont.

Lovely looking lake gav, what other species are in it apart from trout.

Agree with ye there fella but when something has been dug before and its at 3ft or 4ft the dogs obviously tested less than something at 8ft or 10ft ,the depth aint the factor its the time the dogs to its quarry i think the lads are trying to say Dog should still hold its quarry until dug to,dont matter what dept or how long it takes, let it be 5ft or 5 hours they should still be there at the end.
-
Its when your diging to quarry that has been dug before and dont want to be dug again thats when the dog is tested.Dog has'nt got a tape measure down with him he dont know what dept it is.
-
Had she a locater coller on when she went to ground as i cant see one.

stud fee how do they work in your eyes?
fat man replied to x38's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
What billy says is true, and if you give a stranger a service and the litter come no good well its the dog that will be at fault regardles whether the bitch was any good to start with. They will also bad mouth you and your dog to all in their circle and outside it because they will never say the pups took after the bitch. The best thing to do is keep it among the lads you dig with then you know whats what and only breed when needs must.jmo. -
Is there such a thing as a working terrier show anymore, apart from the westmeath hound lurcher..terrier show last year the rest were crap.Dogs been walked around a ring that i would bet have never done a days graft in there lives.I remember the first show in ballinlough maybe 18 to 20 year ago, when NUTTAL JUDGED i was asked to put a terrier back in the trailer because he had signs of work on him,and that was by a well known terrier man fron the north,so just goes to show how long the working terrier world is f****d up by the show ponies with there kc shite.
