  1. There's talk on a shoot I beat on of paying beaters with dogs more than beaters without, any views?. I also remember years ago where shoots didn't allow beaters without dogs (it has changed now though). Interesting to read the gung ho attitude of some of the guys on here who employ and have employed beaters, must be different in the south, up here I know of instances where keepers are frantically phoning around the night before trying to source beaters. Like I said earlier the good shoots paying fair money don't seem to have this problem.
  2. As they say, the only rules are, there are no rules, some people live the life of a monk and die young, some party from cradle to grave and make old bones.
  3. Do it yourself mate, contrary to popular belief you don't need endless amounts of time, little and often works well. Also whilst your training your dog you're building a bond with it also.
  4. I know of several bitches that have been barren or had one or two dead pups that after being cleaned out with antibiotics whilst in season have went on to have a healthy litter. However if I'm reading it right that's not the problem you have (or I'm maybe reading it wrong) your bitch is reabsorbing well on in the pregnancy. Did you have your bitch scanned earlier in her pregnancy, IE is this her second scan for the same pregnancy, if so, although there is no definate proof it is the case but there is a school of thought that thinks scanning a bitch early in her pregnancy can in cases cause bi
  5. Narrow escape might describe it better.
  6. Aye your right I am on another planet cause I'm the one who gets to say who does and who doesn't pick up here and fact is when we shot 60 days a year I never had call to look for picker ups they came to me and even with 480 places a year to fill (8 picker ups per day for 60 days) I still turned folks away Aye your right I am on another planet cause I'm the one who gets to say who does and who doesn't pick up here and fact is when we shot 60 days a year I never had call to look for picker ups they came to me and even with 480 places a year to fill (8 picker ups per day for 60 days)

I'm always amazed how people decry Thatcher when in the time since we've had thirteen years of labour who systematically eroded the very substance and culture of British society for their own ends. Oh and by the way, Scargill was a Kunt. In a word.... Pish!....and we have already established Scargill was a c**t.....the devast
  8. Well don't run a bloody shoot then, I expect to be paid for my time and efforts like any other worker. I actually find it quite incredulous that people think you should put fuel in your car, turn up with your dogs and spend a day of your life working for a pittance to make their shoot economically viable.
  9. Different scenario, that's helping a mate which we would all do. The original question was how much beaters/pickers up were paid. The way I read it, it was in regards to a commercial shoot, where people roll up in expensive vehicles in the best of clobber and pay good money to cap off at birds, the gamebird breeders are paid, the keepers paid, underkeepers paid, the shoot should be earning and we're saying what ?, beaters should be content with being allowed to work their dogs?. My arse, the day wouldn't happen if it wasn't for the beaters and pickers up. I'd also add, the reason the beating ra

  11. I like watching my dogs work as much as the next man, be it lamping, ferreting, ratting etc. I can also get my gundogs out working for my pleasure on many casual shooting days. But if I go beating or picking up where someone else dictates what time I'm required, what time I'm needed till and where to stand and what to do inbetween then I'm looking to be paid, simple as.
  12. Fairplay to you Labtastic, that's the way it should be, no one is going to retire on beaters wages but a man should be paid for his time and sweat. I know of shoots where a beater has got to die before there's an opening whilst others year in year out toil to get beaters, says it all in my opinion.
  13. I enjoy beating and picking up and no the money is not my first priority, but I'm sure as shit not doing it for free or a pittance. Anyone who wants to, well batter on.
  14. You wouldn't, well no decent person at least. But is it a jailing offence ?. If it is then by my reckoning the jails should be full.
  15. Don't see any point whatsoever in a 3/4 collie 1/4 greyhound, you would be as well with a leggy collie. Before any fans of said cross jump in with the brain power angle, a half cross has brains to spare and can on occasions be too clever for their own good without any more collie blood.
  16. Seems ideal to me, retrieves and plucks them.
  17. An instance and an example.I owned a first cross collie greyhoiund from Hancock, a solid reliable bitch. I caught thirty six rabbits with her in one field in September in roughly an hour and a half. no messing straight to hand, the vast majority squatters, the total running time wouldn't have equalled that of a half dozen lamp shy rabbits. All situations are different and to be honest most people who haven't experienced the numbers talked about can't imagine it's possible.
  18. A hundred on the right ground at the right time of year with uneducated rabbits is to my mind more than possible and well done to the guys for getting off their arse.
  19. sorry pal I'm just a student here for 1 year and I'm not skilled enough to get your point Don't know about that, you've caught on quick and your english has improved dramatically. Sure your names not Wang King.
  20. Why that happens? Basically you get bummed.
  21. I'm not a fan of the police, I don't think their lives are worth more than the girl working part time in the kebab shop, she's probably in as much danger and subject to as much abuse at shutting time as your average policeman/woman. That said, two young women went to their work yesterday and didn't come home, that is tragic and god forbid any of us ever find ourselves in the situation where it's our wife/partner/daughter. RIP.
  22. I beg to differ mate, there are many many people who think they are owed a house, just as they think they're owed everything else in life.We all know people on benefits sitting rent free in 3/4 bedroomed houses, for where as they might not find the prospect of honest toil appealing they seem to have unlimited stamina when it comes to reproducing. Then the monkey see monkey do mentality kicks in and when the offspring become fertile then they too start to reproduce and then they request, nay demand a council house with a room apiece for Pocahontas and wee Maradona because they're entitled don't
  23. Other side of the coin, there's three and four bedroom houses tied up by single people and couples of different ages whilst families are cramped into smaller accomodation. I don't think anyone should be forced to move but perhaps if an incentive of some sort was offered. Another angle, what if the people already in the homes were on benefits and getting their rent paid and the people looking for a larger home worked and were actually willing to pay the rent?, should they get priority?.
