  1. Totally agree. When I was gamekeeping in the late 70's and 80's thats all I used, a semi auto, BRNO .22rf, that and shotgun of course..... and I bet more foxes have been injured with shotgun than any rimfire, without any regulation, apart from guidelines as to what bore or shot size you must use!!
  2. Good advice. But speak to your Licencing department before, and if, you go down the WMR route, as many are reluctant to authorise for fox, due to it being a RF, even though it is a better foxing round, than the hummer.
  3. Pheww. I though this post was going the way some other posts go, on different parts of the forum, that just end up slagging each other off. Valid points on both sides of the argument, and one thing it highlights is that different people may use the same calibre for completly different reasons. I use .17hmr for purely killing vermin and the occasional rabbit for the ferrets-not really for sport, although I do enjoy what I do. In many places it is impossible to get any closer to corvids, and they have to be whacked at long range -no choice. (or decoyed to shotgun) When I go down to my sist
  4. Completely dissagree, I shoot plenty of rabbits, Oh, was out this afternoon and had 2, one at 187yds and one 196 yds, both shot in the chest and went down like a lead ballon, you struggle to find the entry wound and there is no exit wound, and they are still perfectly edible. The same happens when you shoot a closer ranges, I know this as I have a 17HMR and shoot it a lot, and yes it is cheap to shoot as you should still only use one shot and not a plethora of quick shots Crows out of range?, depends on what ground your shooting over, I have found the crows on my permission are still with
  5. If the ground right and there is food and they are safe they should stay in area. The land can't be too bad or you would have none. Give it a go, or you will never know. You may be better off making it right for next year, by keeping on top of the vermin this year, and looking after what you have. New game will hopefully move in, with time.
  6. Pheasants dont understand borders and boundaries! You could always say no. Otherwise start feeding your woods, or plant some game crop to try and attract a few more to your land. You will need to control the foxes tho for this to work effectively.
  7. Yes. They are very good. Stuff usually comes within 2 days.
  8. I use a pair of seesaw traps, going through a dry stone wall. Normally use a fenn, but kids occasionally ask me to use them. Get variety of things in them, but usually weasel and voles.
  9. Dont see what the issue is. I go out almost every day or night of the week, I never inform the cops, and I dont have to inform the landowner, he gives me free reign, as I do a vital job. (over 5000 acres) If I were to get stopped by the old bill, which I never have, I would show them a copy of my cert along with ID, and if that won't do, I will take it further. As I said previously, occupational hazard, not worth worrying about. Probably easier to deal with though, with a rifle or shotgun, rather than lurcher/terrier or pellet gun. It doesnt make it right tho and I can understand some frustra
  10. Were you careful where you travelled and watched you step!!sorry, out of order I know, but couldn't resist it!! Hope you get it sorted.
  11. Been using a new suppressor on a .308 this week. It,s an ASE Utra and seems a decent bit of kit. Screw down over the muzzle, and is considerably shorter than the T8 or wildcat predator. It can't be field stripped, and has a finish similar to T8. As far as sound goes, I couldn't tell the difference between the T8 or the ASE. Wondered if anybody has experienced problems with this suppressor as it has been around for a few years? This is it compared to T8.
  12. Split the skin across the breastbone and peel back. With a sharp knife, slice off each breast, or put thumb under bottom of the breast bone and rip the whole thing up and off. All the meat should be ok, just watch for lead etc.
  13. I,ve used excellent Thermal eqipment from QiOptic, in Wales, but not sure if they sell to other than, Military, Police and other government agencies. All small units. Not had chance to look at Flir.
  14. "Morning flight" by Peter Scott and "Kenzie the Wild Goose Man" by Colin Wilock are two of my favorites about wildfowling but "Tides ending" and "Dark Estuary" by BB are excellent. I dont think you will find better reads on the subject, and although not written to be instructional, you will learn loads. Truly excellent.
  15. Nice one, give you some nice sport one day.
  16. F.G.A.U oh and its only a union jack when its flown from a ships jack. Interesting one that. I work with a couple of old salts, and thats what they always say...........BUT the ships Jack, was named as it is, because it flies the Union Jack!.... a bit like the chicken and the egg. LoL Nowt wrong with having them everywhere, best rallying flag in the world.
  17. Dog looks like he's had enough of you taking photos!
  18. Nice write up and you got me itching to get out! Probably leave it a couple more weeks.
  19. I can give you a load of advice re how the mildot scope works, but my knowledge is using it with centrefire. I am guessing from the initial question that there is a field expedient for use with an airgun. If you need further or get no replies from airgun users I will re contact
  20. Dont have a spare one, but I made mine out of a thin piece of rebar, 18" long, with a 4" handle welded on top, also rebar. Grind the tip to a rounded point. Cheap to make if you know someone who can weld, and I blagged the rebar. 18" isnt that long, but if your using it with a MK3, its ample, to ensure you can find the tunnel as you close in on the ferret.
  21. It only matters if you worry about it! Occupational hazard!
  22. Hey, my 2 young jills tried pulling a big long brown one through the mesh the other day, funny as feck. They never got it through but it was funny watching them try at first. I usually leave the slugs as they seem to clean up the odd little bit of food that gets kicked out through the cage, and there is no trace at the moment of them inside. Kids like smashing them with bricks tho!
  23. Nice one mate. I have one of those Johnny Stewart fox calls, which I find works brilliant on cubs, but usually I use the palm of hand. On this occasion I didnt have time for either! Thats the way it goes! What rifle do you have there, is that a silhouette?
  24. What knot are tying? I use a clove hitch and I dont have a problem, but before I go out and whilst the poles are on the basket, I check them for tightness. Hope this helps.
