  1. Just been out for an hour with ferrets. Loads of bunnies enjoying the afternoon sun, and bolted a couple, with an older Jill. Once small bury cleared put two of this years jills in, and as always you never know how eager they will be, but they were, right up for it, and both were racing around quite quickly. I'll give it another month or so and then start them on small 2 or 3 hole burries with bunnies!
  2. Totally agree about the boresnake wearing the muzzle and crown, and wouldn't use it on a precision barrel. That is the reason I only pull through once at the end of cleaning, and in a straight a line as possible.
  3. They just can't. There wings are wider than the bars or ladder, and they would have to fly upwards. They naturally want to fly to the top part of the cage, hence the angled top.
  4. Its not quite as tall as it looks, and the top angles arn't that steep. The trap itself is moveable in sections, and like the ones we use it is made from heavy duty timber, as otherwise the wind just wrecks them in days, up in the hills. The other advantage I could see with this trap above, was that it attracted flocks of small birds, that were dropping in both through the ladder and directly through the wire, to get the maggots and beetles etc that were on the carcases. I would imagine that this may help the trap look not as sinister ,to any carrion/hoodies that were a little suspicious.
  5. This one is excellent. Good prices, nice feller and fast. http://www.agouti-nets.co.uk/index.html
  6. Markha. This is a ladder trap I saw on an estate in scotland, some time ago and I found it quite interesting. The ladder or letterbox trap you have made is similar to ones used in the Peaks, but the one in the photo I liked more, although I have not had the time to make one yet. As you can see it, it is a similar design, but the ladder is really quite low, and there is a stink pit below ground level, that deer and sheep carcases are put in. The idea is that, when the trap is moved, the pit is filled in. You will also see, that there is a substantial amount of ground around the pit, for
  7. Had a very similar problems with AI's and the issue was a build up of carbon and copper/brass, in the CHAMBER. This had the effect of closing the headspace down. Clean, then de-copper with a decent fluid, using good quality chamber brushes, and this MAY solve the problem. If you ask around, many people fail to clean the chamber with the same discipline that they clean the barrel. Hope this helps.
  8. Where I am, it always seems to go a bit quiet this time of year, with the live traps, as there is so much other food about, they dont seem to scavenge as much. Still get the odd one or two though, but mainly cats.
  9. I have not heard that before with shotgun applications, although they often get conditions with FAC applications. I am not sure if they can actually do that, but its just whether you want to pursue the matter, or bite your bottom lip and get on with it. It would have been interesting what they would have said if there were no clay pigeon clubs in your area, and you only wanted to use it for vermin shooting. 3 months means nothing anyway, do you have to go to the club once in that 3 months, or 100 times in that 3 months!!! If they wanted to go down that line, a letter from a current certif
  10. Get a piece of 10mm rebar and weld a T handle on. Mine is only about 450mm long off memory, as I use it in conjunction with a locator.
  11. Duncan. I give mine a full clean using bore guide every 10-20 shots depending on what and when I am shooting. The only other difference is that I will give a full clean if the rifle gets wet, no matter how many rounds. Once cleaned with brush and patches, I then finish off with a bore snake. Suppressor comes off rifle every time I finish with it, and before cleaning, but I am sure you know this already, or at least the reason why. I also de copper the barrel each time I clean, with MPro7, but this has come from the strict cleaning drill with other full bore rifles I use.
  12. Duncan. It was a good gut feeling! Respect, and may we be allowed to kill fox with a shotgun for years to come.
  13. It happens at times, for various reasons, and we all hate it when it happens. In my experience it has been pipe collapses, but when I was much younger with no ferret finder, I lost one in a large warren, and despite leaving its box open over night hoping it might be there in the morning, it wasn't. I have a Jill now, that the wife absolutely adores and I have to admit its a great pet aswell, she orders me not to take it out, for fear of loosing it. Of course I don't obey this order, as ferrets like us, are born to hunt, and I think that would be cruel. (the other ferrets she is happy for me
  14. I can only comment on what I have, and what I have used. I have the CZ 452 varmint, which I notice you have a .22 452. I personally think it is a fabulous little workhorse of a rifle, nicely balenced, and after spending £10 on a trigger kit, its the dogs nuts. Two of my mates also have .17hmr and between them they have Sako quad, and Anshutz, with the 14/15" barrel. I have shot them both and there is not a lot in it, apart from I like the feel of the CZ more but, that is probably because I use it everyday. With the heavy barrel, Its nice and solid if you understand what I mean. The CZ is aro
  15. There's a lot of meat and bone to get through at 25yds with 6 shot, for a clean kill, even with full choke.
  16. Could have been young bunnies down there, that it had killed or was going back to kill. Its the only thing similar that I have had.
  17. Totally agree. The person who told you this may have meant shotshell cartridges, but they are loaded with size 12 shot, and are only any good on rodents to about 10 metres. Certainly not pigeons.
  18. The most I ever caught, in a 100yds longnet using the trditional method was 48 singlehanded and I chinned them quickly, Flipping 'eck, that was a good catch!
  19. Yes I have also had similar large numbers of bunnies in end of pipe, but they have always been on biggish warrens, and I only work 3 ferrets underground at any one time, and then tag replacements. I have often wondered if it is because they can move around a bit more, without having to imediatly bolt as a result of not enough ferrets for the network. I went out myself yesterday afternoon with my boys, and although there were rabbits everywhere on top, it was very quiet underground, with rabbits running off into vegatation rather than diving for cover.
  20. I don't grow blueberries, or bilberries or whimberries as they are known around here, but what a fantastic landscape that is, at the bottem of your post.
  21. A couple of years ago, me and my young lad had been out early decoying crows one Sunday morning. We packed up about 11.15 and started walking down the long track back to the motor. When we were about 150 metres off, I could see that there were a couple of other cars parked near mine, which is not unusual, as a bridal path goes off in another direction, and is popular with walkers. I then see this fox slip under the wooden gate, and start trotting up the track towards us. I grabbed my lad by the arm, and whispered "charlie". We squatted down with our backs to the dry stone wall, and I took aim
  22. Seriously guys, is it possible to do the chop, when they are in the net, I don't chop but I would have thought it was pretty damm hard when curled up in a purse net or tangled up in a long net? The only reason I am asking is the original question from the lad, said "once in the net" or something similar.
  23. Best day of the week early doors! Laws about shooting game on a Sunday but FA about ferreting!
