  1. Well done mate, not for the shooting, but for holding the nerves to go in there, I flippin hate rats and would rather eat my own teeth than mooch around pest controling them with a pistol/rifle.
  2. Nice one Steve, Im surprised he sold it to you after all the work he put in to the camo' job, Enjoy and happy hunting mate.
  3. On the subject of Hawke scopes, I have the 4.5-14x42 sidewinder tactical and its a real pain for losing zero in a big way, not just the odd couple of clicks to re-zero, sometimes it goes way out, perhaps a full turn or more, then just when Im happy with it being zero, ill find it has wandered out again within a few shots. Got it new from fleabay gun dealer, but so pained with it Im seriously thinking of selling it or sending it back to Hawke/Deben. It cost a fair bit and its taken the enjoyment out of shooting with it now as I never feel sure its still on zero, I think a call to Deben tom
  4. A nice write up John, well done on finally nailing him. Have a point Mark
  5. It seems that mixi' is spreading it about then? Same story up here in Wales, loads of rabbits over the summer then in early october we noticed the bunnies had mixi' and there werent that many about. Went out lamping a few weeks back and only had 2 rabbits each, both had mixi; its certainly wiped them out very quickly. Hopefully there will be some immune ones left to keep the pot full for next year.
  6. Thanks for starting this thread Gary, nice one. Went in to Caernarfon for the 2 mins silence, fell in and ranked up with the old boys and some of the Royal Welsh lads there. Heros one and all, from the great wars in history books to the current conflicts around the world.
  7. Fieldcraft is a massive subject, Simon should be thanked for bothering to type so much for you The last of the 6'S'(smell, sound, shape, shine, shadow, silhouette) isnt mentioned too often, and this is 'Seismic' or vibrations through the ground, mainly from your footsteps, especially if they are heavy because you 'think' you are a long way from your prey and dont start to creep, often you will always then be a long way from your prey! If you can get a copy of this book it will teach you a lot about fieldcraft in a nature or hunting context: Nature Detective
  8. Aha, Chimp, you have made me do a bit of research! I did think this was a female partridge, On reflection perhaps its a female common pheasant? I stick my hands up and won't claim it was a typo!
  9. Cheers Jack' Spent the morning doing a bit of rough shooting and 'blooded' the new gun with its 1st Partridge< end of the days bag was 2 partridge and a heap of crows for the farmer.
  10. A very good question that deserves a good answer. Apart from special services worldwide, the army wouldnt/couldnt waste money on giving all soldiers hitech camo patterns, because they know that camo is nothing compared to fieldcraft and there are less soldiers with good fielcraft. Those units that do all the things you all love to see in the films, they may get special camo's that are environment specific, and they need all the help they can get, as they are in places that would either make you physically sick with nerves or turn you in to a zombie - yes they do need and get the gucci kit
  11. Dont sweat it mate, on my visit the guy chatted about all sorts of stuff and I felt at ease with my honest answers, if you get asked something and you dont know the answer Do Not Bullshit, just tell em the truth. All the best, Im sure you'll be fine.
  12. Oh here we go again! I think camo is damn stupid, sorry guys, but as an ex squaddy the last thing I want to wear is cammo. What does camo realy do? It provides some amount of camo' from human eyes, so if your a poacher - great, Or if you dont want people to see you when your out shooting - great. Does it hide you from your prey? Get real, ofcourse it doesnt, keeping still and perhaps covering your hands and face, with gloves and a hood/cap are all thats needed for getting pigeons and other easily spooked prey. I like many of you have worn jeans and t-shorts when out shooting, did it make
  13. Its a great funny little thread. Anyway- I am not Sparticus, I am the father of a murdered son and the husband of a murdered wife - I AM GLADIATOR!
  14. Well I spent the morning visiting the gun shops, lots of coffee and lots of advice. Now the owner of a Bettinsoli diamondline delux side plate 28" a fter going through a few guns for mount and pattern test and a few clays. A very interesting morning as I tried 2 Bettinsoli's the side plate I bought and a standard diamondline, the latter of which had a completely different cast and my eye never lined up down the barrel, quiet an eye opener as they are the same gun stock! All of the other guns I tried out would have needed a bit of expert fitting, mainly cast and comb height, but for strai
  15. Hi Matt, Im going for a good old 12g for starters and going for an O/U, basically Ill get whatever fits, Ill have a look at 28" barrels as Ill mainly use the gun for rough shooting and feathered pests, yea I will bash some clays as I do enjoy it. If a 2nd hand Baikal fits well and shoulder well then Im happy to get a cheap gun, or even a couple of 3 cheap guns, I have a budget of around £750 absolute max, I know theres a few guns I could buy new , yea it would be nice to have a Beretta, just for the snobbery, but hey Id rather have 3 solid 2nd hand guns, a 12g, 410, and a 3 shot, all base
  16. Glad thats all sorted as I was about to ask the mods for a smiley that denoted digging with a big spade!
  17. Just a bit of info, SG cert' arrived today, so off to get a gun this week. Im in North Wales and the whole process from posting forms to arrival of cert' took 12 weeks. Happy days and have plenty of pest to clear on my permissions as its got to the point where they ring me up and ask me to clear stuff on their own farms and their sons, cousins, uncles farms etc plus lots of partridge and pheasant up for grabs as well. Cheers Mark
  18. Personally I would not buy any of the ex-eastern block NV stuff for one simple and legitimate reason - Horrendous ignorance to radiation shielding - the Russians didnt give to shakes about the safety of their troops when developing and issuing any of their NV kit and as such the tubes give off radiation at a level way above the world guide lines for safe levels - brain tumour - eye damage - get something else. We were told about this issue when I was in Army. My health is more important than an overpriced pice of russian crap thats 60 years old! Hell even the original 'starlight' scopes ar
  19. Another thought Azman - Make your own, loads of kits about, that way you get to pick the tang you need and then have the pleasure of knowing you made it
  20. I have 2 knives: Opinel for everyday skinning and game prep, the other is my trusted kukri knife, this is up to the most delicate or toughest of jobs everything from chopping trees down to chopping the vegetables (albeit a bit roughly and you need a bucket to catch the chopped bits as they fly off the board across the room!) plus the 2 small knives in the sheath -small skinning knife called 'karda' plus a fire steel calle 'chakmak - not my names for them I add but the nepalee name, anyway 2 knifes have done me proud for years. The only other knifes I have are multi tools - an original sta
  21. I had a similar conversation with my areas FEO. Upshot of which was .22lr .17hmr and .223 for fox, North Wales police wont put fox on the license for any calibre smaller than .223. FAC air - waste of time and money, just stick to 22 rimmy 17hmr and try for a 223 for fox, just ask the FEO when he comes around again.
  22. Yep then hes been sold a left handed stock, looking at the gun from a birds eye view, ribs up, barrels pointing left and stock on the righthand side, the stock is canted down from the centreline. Ill let his dad know tonight and hopefully he has got the cash to get the gun fitted for him. Cheers all Mark
  23. Dane, do you also think its a left handed gun then? As when you look down the rib from the barrel end the stock is very noticibly canted over to the right. I agree about poor show on the gun dealers part, Im sure they got the gun when they were at the CLA fair.
  24. Hi All, I was out with the young-en the other day and he was moanng that his gun, Miroku 12g, was very good as he wasnt hitting much. I spent the day with him and I have to say he missed plenty of crows and pigeons, you could see the shot was close as the birds got buffeted by the shot. So at the end of the day with 6 shells left I told him to shoot at one of the older plastic pigeon decoys, it was around 30-35yds away. He took a shot and it went left by about 1.5 ft, he then took a second shot and this was a little lower and about 2ft to the left...hmmm, give me the gun, so I have a cou
