They claim that it works on a light frequency that animals can't see? The green laser is about the most visible light frequency to the mammalian eye! I've seen one in use and wasn't very impressed. Basically an expensive green torch. You'd probably be better off investing similar money on a Light force or similar.

LED torches are rubbish through filters. They are very short on the red end of the spectrum, and there is virtually no IR emitted, so red/amber filters and IR sheeting will basically reduce the light output to virtually nothing. The halogen/krypton beams are far better for filtered work.

Andy, I've not heard of anyone having a mod application/variation turned down in the last few years. Hearing protection is plenty of reason, and you should be granted mods for any and all rifles. As for the law, it's as clear as mud. I'm in the "clarity in gun licencing law would make it too easy for Joe Public to own them" conspiracy theory camp.

Combro cb-625 MArk 4
matt_hooks replied to secretagentmole's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
The Combro is ok, but the very short measuring distance means there is a pretty large margin for error, a very fast sampling rate is needed to get an accurate reading for fps. I use a Chrony shooting chrono, which set me back only slightly more than the Combro, and has a 12 inch base length, so a similar sampling rate to the combro gives far better accuracy (the base line on the combro is about 2" iirc?) I'd agree that a chronograph is an essential item in the kit of a shooter, especially an air rifle shooter, and the combro does the job ok. -
True, but fps and ft.lb are directly proportional (well, there's a square in there somewhere)

Adam, that's not entirely true. The condition will be "land that has been approved by the chief officer of police of the area that the land is in." That means that if the land has been checked previously you don't need to get it checked again. Ask the land owner if the land has been checked, or phone the firearms department of the area and ask. All approved land should be on a database that all forces have access to. As an aside, if you want to get the restrictive condition removed it's good for them to see that you have checked lots of land. They don't need to see any permission letters f

There's no "land permission form" as such. A letter from the land owner stating that they give you permission to shoot x caliber, to take x game/vermin, over land at x location should be plenty.

£ for a Weirauch springer? If you don't want it I'll have it! Snap his hand off for it. They're well built and should last years of good shooting. They're fairly easy to service, but if you're not confident/competent then a trip to a local gunsmith is a good plan. There are a few people on here that tune springers, might be worth tracking one of them down. It can often be better, and more cost effective, to stand the postage and send your gun away to someone who really knows air guns rather than have your local gunsmith work on it if he's not used to working with them.

10 is nowhere near enough to get a decent average. What was the max variation (plus and minus)?

If you're asking "did this really happen" then you need to get some help.

I agree bird, and?

The laser dots and holographic sights are fine for very close range stuff, where ultra fast target acquisition and point and shoot are important, for example on pistols or SMG's. For hunting at any sensible range there's no real point. If you have a very good laser, and are very disciplined, you can turn it into a passable range finding tool for an air rifle, but a LRF is probably cheaper and easier to use, requiring no mental arithmetic. The only time a laser dot is a good tool for airgun hunting is possibly in close range ratting, otherwise don't bother. Particularly, don't be fooled by

Section five hand guns are defined as lethal firearms with a barrel less than 30 cm (12") long, or an overall length of less than 60cm. I can't find any other definition of the difference between an air pistol and an air rifle, though there must be one.
-
Depends on the companies written disciplinary procedure, his contract and exactly what the warning was. Threatening behaviour would often be classed as gross misconduct, which on most contracts and most companies can lead to immediate dismissal. Tell him to get hold of the procedure and find out exactly what sort of warning (written, verbal etc.) he's been given.

No way, padlocks will never pass a gun safe inspection. Course they will, if they're good enough padlocks! The security level required is "to BS7558/92 or equivalent. If the padlocks are as secure then they will pass. I know people who have cabinets passed for FAC, up to and including .308, and only padlocks securing them.

My nanna used to harvest it. I remember sitting in her kitchen grating it, and balling my eyes out. Seriously hot stuff, hence why it's normally mixed with cream to cool it down a bit. Mixing it with tarragon vinegar sounds really good actually. I've never picked any of my own, keep looking out for it but never entirely sure if I've got the right plant. Anyone got any good pics to help identify it? Love a good bit of hot horseradish with red meat, but the shop bought stuff is always a bit weak and insipid.

If you have a reasonable level of mechanical skill and knowledge, and your workshop set up sounds like you do, then you'll have no problems. Take them to pieces, and replace the necessary bits. Make sure you completely clean all the old lubricant out of the air chambers, and replace with a good quality grease. Don't use any mineral oils in areas where compressed air will be present, for obvious reasons. Other than that, as with anything, take your time and enjoy! You can go as far as you like with restoring, including stripping and re-finishing stocks, re-bluing barrels and actions, i

where do i stand legally?
matt_hooks replied to savagebulldog20's topic in General Airgun Discussion
And then the tree falls down, maybe onto your house, maybe somewhere else. You're going to feel a right charlie if you end up totalling your house because of a few birds! Doing anything to harm the tree is pretty silly, and I get the feeling the OP is more sensible than that. -
And Scottish estates asking for a minimum of .308 is tosh. Most of the pro stalkers use .270's, as they are better at longer ranges, but some use the .243 quite happily, plenty of power out to a good range, and a lovely flat trajectory. Some countries in Europe don't allow ANY air weapons other than on some kind of licence.

Clean your barrel or leave it dirty?
matt_hooks replied to langouroux's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I know a local gunsmith and RFD who swears by boresnakes. He reckons they're worth hundreds to him in re-barrelings, rechamberings and crownings, removals of broken bore snakes and new rifles each year! Clean after every trip, it can't do any harm, and first shot accuracy is better from a clean barrel, or at least a known condition. -
Four female coaches, and how many male ones?

Bit late on this one. The loose screw will almost certainly be the one that holds the muzzle end/moderator adaptor on. This is accessed through the charging port, and it is a strange imperial sized alan head machine screw. The heads tend to get chewed up with repeated tightening, not a brilliant piece of design really. I have a few spares lying around if you need one, just PM me your address and I'll chuck a couple in the post. Take the old one out, then put a new one in, with a little loctite or other thread locking liquid, and tighten well. Hope that's useful.
-
I'd go with something being loose, barrel band, stock screws, scope mounts or similar. Go over the rifle and check all your screws are tightened properly, and that nothing that shouldn't move does.
