The HO guidance states that it is reasonable to allow the user to decide what calibre they wish to use, given that it has sufficient energy to ensure a humane kill. Some firearms departments accept fox as a good reason for .17, others will say that it's not powerful enough. The best bet is to get it issued for vermin, but with the "any other legal quarry" condition.

Bull, yes, it's fine to shoot in your garden, but it's not fine to shoot protected species. ALL birds are protected species. It's only the general licences that allow some of them to be shot, and then only for the specified reasons. Buster, you highlight the restriction, but not what is required for the offence to be completed. A public footpath, bridleway etc. do NOT count as "highway" for the purposes of this offence. The 50 feet law is probably the most misunderstood, misquoted piece of shooting legislation (and it's not even from any of the firearms acts, but the highways acts

Is cleaning the barrel of an air rifle really necessary
matt_hooks replied to mjr88's topic in General Airgun Discussion
A .177 jag/brush should do the job in the .20. I use my .22 kit to clean my .243 with no problems. -
That frequency at that power is basically line of sight. Will go through some building materials but not others. Clear, flat ground you'll get a few miles with them, hills will b###er you though! They're a good bit of kit, and not a bad price!

That is a long and convoluted, and pretty sick story John. Involves lots of kindness from forum members and a scheming scumbag who took advantage of the trust. Anyway, I replied to your wanted about the VHF radio John, you still looking for one? (sorry to hijack the thread)

You done anything as a once in a lifetime experience

Sail round Iceland in a 60 foot racing yacht called Maiden (Tracy Edwards did the Whitbread RTW race in her with the first all female crew). Saw the sun at midnight inside the arctic circle and had dolphins and whales around the boat most days. Climbed Maiden's mast whilst in a moderate swell to replace the main sheet into it's pulley at the top of the mast. The mast is 120 feet tall, most of the time I was over clear water. Swam in an Icelandic Fjord with several very pretty (and very naked) young Icelandic women. Trust me, those girls are liberated! Learned to fly a plane, proper -
FOUND Lost between Fort William and Kinlochleven
matt_hooks replied to k9delboy's topic in Lost and Found
The little lad has done well to survive for that long. I guess the weather's not been too bad up there, and there's no lack of food up there if you're quick and determined, but still shows a certain resourcefulness! -
HV .22LR is a waste of time. Accuracy is far more important than a few extra ft.lb's of energy, and the standard and HV rounds sit firmly in the "transonic" speed range, where the flow is unpredictable and so the rounds are inaccurate. If you have to shoot them with .22LR (and it's more than capable of taking down a fox at 50 or 60 yards if put in the right place) then a subsonic round is the way forward, one that works well in your rifle so you can put the bullet in exactly the right place.

Bloody hell, I didn't make the connection between Leitz and Leica. Thought that the name was an attempt to "pretend" to be LEica's, didn't realise they actually were. I always see posts from people who've picked up bargains, but it never happens to me.

Bit of a poser for you here. I was in a charity shop today and came across a pair of binoculars. They look quite old (well, let's face it, they ARE quite old) but I glanced through them and the image was brilliant. Well worth lashing out a fiver on anyway. The focus ring was spinning freely, but the diopter adjustment seemed to work well. These things just felt right in my hand! So anyway, I got them home, tightened up three little screws on the focus wheel and it now works beautifully. They seem to have a very wide FOV, the eyepiece quotes a 122m FOV at 1000m, for a 10x40 bin, a boast

No worries, if you don't ask you don't get.

I want to say I can definitely come, but am waiting to hear from the hospital about an op, so can't give a definite yes/no. If I do come it'll be early saturday morning to saturday evening. I probably won't be able to do overnight. I missed the last one due to unforeseen circumstances, so am really hoping to make this one, but don't put me down yet as a certain.

The Howa is normally fully floating. What stock do you have? Floating the barrel is pretty easy to do with a piece of copper pipe and some sand paper, just go a little bit at a time and you'll be fine.

Been looking around and I can get these brand new for £, so would you take £50 posted?

He actually claims .02 of a second. Is it possible? Probably. Can he hit anything at that speed? Unlikely. What he's doing there is VERY close range, using targets that don't show the strike. Balloons look impressive but are actually very easily popped by the hot gasses from the blanks he uses. All the above said, he's f#####g quick, and at close range, even if he slowed himself down considerably, you'd have an extra orifice before you knew what had hit you!

Hi Si. What material are you looking for these in? It might be worth considering delrin or similar for an airgun, lighter, cheaper and easier to machine than steel/ally. If I had access to a lathe I'd knock those up in a few minutes for you. I'll see if I can find someone who'll give me a little time on theirs.

Hi Sham. Where in SW are you? I'm interested if you're nearby. Matt

Just noticed this is just down the road from me, so thought I'd pop over and see what it's about. Are any of the southern lot thinking of heading over? I'd probably go for the saturday, as I work sundays. There's usually a decent turn out of traders there, as well as all the other fun stuff to do, lots of air rifles to play with etc. If anyone's coming from far away I can offer a bed for the night before and/or after, it'll need an early start to get it all in!

What exactly do you mean by electro-plating? You can "electro plate" with all sorts of materials. I can't see why you would want to electro plate though, it really doesn't do anything a good care regime and a wipe over with an oily rag after use doesn't.

Tracer LEDRAY GL4 Tactical Gun Lamp
matt_hooks replied to BunnyHunter's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
Obviously you've NOT been using an illegal artificial illuminating device to shoot deer! There are several LED torches on eBay at great prices that do the job very well, spending loads on a lamp isn't really necessary. -
You can't fire an actual shot, but if you get hold of some blanks that might work to scare them. Of course it'd probably scare off your desired quarry too, but then so will running up and down the croft flapping.

Hi Richard. You forgot to put a price on this.

anyone shoot a 270 winchester
matt_hooks replied to jamie g's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
A lot of the highland stalkers use .270 Win, it'll knock down Red's at 200 yards with ease. When moderated it's a great round to fire, the mod reduces the violent shove it gives unmoderated to a gentle push. If it'll take down a big red stag, then it'll knock over a roe or munty with ease. Of course you might have trouble getting some places cleared for it.
