  1. There is no such things. At least there is no winning genetic formula measured in neat percentages. The best dog for the job will be one bred out of two dogs that are doing that job to a high level, from lines that are bred for that job, which has been reared, trained and entered well....
  2. To be honest mate, depends in time if year. Now, two pm isn't that long from roosting time, but when they are poults it is :-)
  3. To be honest since coming on here I've learnt that coursing means - Lots of money Lots of competitive people Lots of gypsys Lots of dog theft Lots of trouble with the police Lots of lying Lots of stupid people Sounds fun.
  4. Aye, that's the way of the world. . . Never underestimate peoples capacity for stupidity.
  5. It's alright when it's genuine and occasional. But in the school I work in, you get kids with something like a 25% attendance or less. . . . . and most of the rest is 'authorised absences' . . . . . i.e the parents don't give a f**k and say its fine to f**k school off. To stop themselves getting done by the EWO (Educational Welfare Officer) and taken to court. A lot were saying the kid is ill, but a lot of illness and no reasons and social services may be called, or preventative services etc. So then they were saying, it was a holiday, visiting relatives etc. So the fines stop that to an e
  6. Excellent, now we have a keeper that takes shots at over 300 yards at quarry he cant properly identify . . . . . . with a weapon apparently incapable of killing the intended quarry (or in this case a weaker animal than the intended quarry) at the range it was used . . . . . even when the animal was hit in the head. That guy sounds awesome.
  7. See this is the kind of stuff that should be broadcast. It's this kind of stuff that can be used to turn the fluffy bunny brigade against the RSPCA. Imagine that?
  8. This season, I've had the one above that JB posted when ferreting and I've caught a really light sandy, almost golden one on the lamp. I've also had a few with different white marks on them, and lamped a black one the other night, but was too far off to run. In previous seasons I've had a variety of others, including mixed colors, blues, etc etc etc. Most of these have feck all to do with folk releasing pets etc. The Agouti color is actually made up of a huge range of colours if you look at it, and any of these can be expressed more prevalently as a form of mutation. This is after all
  9. Aye, it's got more popular, with more folk doing it, as the countryside has got smaller, with less game in it. As you say Bosun, a certain amount of land is needed, and when folk get desperate, that's when problems start. Most of us with perm, could theoretically do what we like most of the time. Not knocking a bit of fence jumping, but when you are doing something illegal. . . . it's usually better if folk aren't looking for you. It's a bit like, if you were a drug smuggler. . . . with a car full of drugs, You wouldnt drive around over the speed limit, smoking a joint.
  10. To be honest, it's one of the very few things that makes me happy. Being out with the dogs, day or night, walking or hunting. . . . it just helps me cope with life and the world. And as a result, I think I try to bury myself in it as much as possible. Add to that, the fact that I'm not great with people. . . . But on a side note. . . one thing that I find interesting, is that the popularity of lurchers has exploded in the last ten years (pretty much since the ban, but maybe not soley because of). First you have all of the lads who have got into it, because it's illegal. it's 'cool' and it
  11. If you are interested in the origins of religion etc. The Golden Bough, by James Frazer (A Scottish Anthropologist). It was first written in 1890. There are a lot of books about it. Another decent read (if a little dense in writing style) is Ritual Theory, Ritual Practice, by Catherine Bell. They believe that some kind of religious or spiritual though was present right at the start of mans evolution, when someone had the ability to question or consider death. . . . They think that in general it progressed through - Animism - Totemism - Anthropomorphism - Polytheism - Monotheis

    Prey Drive

Te drive to prey upon something I would guess?
  13. I don't even know where to begin with that post . . . . . . This thread I think, has shown that it is horses for courses. Both breeds will show each other up in different situations, and are adapted for different tasks, through a life time of selective breeding. You get a lot of shit in both breeds obviously, but those are not the dogs to judge the breed on. P.s - Most of what you have written about spaniels is just plain dumb. No offense, but it just highlights a lack of understanding and experience of them. And before you think i'm breed blind. . . . we have one spaniel h
  14. Aye I've carried a small spade for years, until I broke it a few weeks back. Since then I've had to take a big one. It's a pain to dig in tight hedges but when digging 4/5 foot or more its a blessing. You don't end up with a hole to narrow to dig further or get your arm down lol.
  15. I can see the use of being able to lock it into a position to lift soil out. But I've come to the conclusion that there is less hassle involved in carrying a proper spade than there is digging with a little one.
  16. All of those examples that I stated (species) are greater in size and body weight (often or always) than the kind of terriers we (and other nations) use. And there are plenty being worked on those quarry single handed. Although not often with the intention of the dog killing it, I will admit. But they certainly don't get killed.
  17. Bloody hell. . . . now I'm the bad man who is attacking Mr Mink Hopefully someone will remember how this started
  18. ACCIP - Without wanting to get into a lengthy argument. As this post WAS defending the guy, whilst trying to explain to him, why he had achieved mass hate on here. . . . . BUT. . . I have a feeling that the urgency to write the book now, may have something to do with a desire to put his name on the practice asap. . . . so he is the 'official founder'. . . .as one cannot copyright a method of working with a wild animal. I DO believe that what he is doing is interesting and worthwhile. But I think, from what he has posted on here (including exerts from his book so far), he will end up wr
  19. Well, the history of minkenry is perhaps a little short would you not think? And seeing as at the moment the other two areas we know it includes is stuff about ferrets and stuff about polecats, neither of which the author has seen, or knows about. I was just suggesting that immediately writing a book, may be a little premature. From what he has said, he has material for a damn good paper, but not much more. Give it another couple of years. . . . . and a book would probably be interesting. But every one likes to be famous. . . . or at least try. . . .
